1 حَذَمَهُ ذ , (S, Msb, K,) aor. حَذِمَ , (Msb, K,) inf. n. حَذْمٌ, (S, Msb,) He cut it, or cut it off, (S, Msb, K,) in any manner: (TA:) or hastily, or quickly. (K.) ― -b2- And [ He did it quickly: or] he was quick in it; [as also حَذَمَ فِيهِ;] i. e., in any action. (S, Msb.) You say, حَذَمَ فِى مَشْيِهِ, (Msb,) and قِرَاآءَتِهِ, فى (S, K,) He was quick [ in his walking, or going, and in his reading, or reciting ]: (S, Msb, K:) and so in other things: (K:) by “ other things ” being here meant walking and the like; for حَذْمٌ, of which the verb is حَذَمَ, signifies the being quick in walking, app. with a stretching out of the arms backwards: (TA:) and a light, an active, or an agile, walking. (S, TA.) [See also حَذَمَانٌ, below.] Hence, (Mgh, Msb, TA,) 'Omar said, (S, TA,) to the مُؤَذّن of Jerusalem, (TA,) اـِذَا أَذَّنْتَ قَتَرَسَّلْ وَاـِذَا أَقَمْتَ فَا@حْذِمْ, (S, A, Mgh, Msb, TA,) i. e. [ When thou chantest the أَذَان, be moderate; not quick: and when thou chantest the اـِقَامَة,] cut short the lengthening of thine utterance; meaning, be quick in the اقامة: (As, Mgh, TA:) another reading is said to have been given by Z, namely, [فَا@خْذِمْ,] with خ. (TA.)

حَذَمٌ ذ The flight of a bird that has its wings clipt, (K, TA,) as the pigeon and the like. (TA.)

حَذِمٌ ذ A sharp, or cutting, sword; as also ↓ حِذْيَمٌ, with kesr to the ح, (K,) and with fet-h to the ى; (TA;) or ↓ حَذِيمٌ. (So in two copies of the S.)

حُذَمٌ ذ and ↓ حُذَمَةٌ Short in stature and in step; (K;) applied to a man: (TA:) and the latter is likewise fem.; (S, K, TA;) applied to a woman as meaning short in stature. (S, TA.)

حُذُمٌ ذ Swift hares. (IAar, K. [See also حُذَمَةٌ.]) ― -b2- And Skilful thieves. (IAar, K.)

حُذَمَةٌ ذ ; see حُذَمٌ. ― -b2- One says of the female hare, حُذَمَةٌ لُذَمَةٌ تَسْبِقُ الجَمْعَ بِالأَكَمَةِ, i. e. Swift, persistent in running, she outstrips the company pursuing her upon the hill. (TA.)

حَذَمَانٌ ذ Quickness in walking or going: (K:) accord. to Aboo-'Adnán, a pace of the kind termed ذَمِيلٌ, exceeding what is termed مَشْىٌ. (TA.) ― -b2- And Slowness (K, TA) in walking or going: so says Aboo-'Adnán on the authority of Khálid Ibn-Jembeh. (TA.) Thus it bears two contrary meanings. (K.)

حُذَامٌ ذ an epithet applied to a slave: so in the saying, اِشْتَرَى عَبْدًا حُذَامَ المَشْىِ He bought a slave slow [ in gait ], lazy, (K, TA,) devoid of good: so says Khálid Ibn-Jembeh. (TA.)

حَذِيمٌ ذ : see حَذِمٌ.

حِذْيَمٌ ذ Skilful (K, TA) in a thing. (TA.) ― -b2- See also حَذِمٌ.

1 حَذَا النَّعْلَ ذ , [aor. يَحْذُو,] inf. n. حَذْوٌ and حِذَاآءٌ, He measured the sandal, or sole, or made it according to a measure; (K;) and cut it (T, K) according to a pattern: (T, TA:) or he made the sandal, or sole, لِى for me. (Mgh.) And حَذَا النَّعْلَ بِالمِثَالِ He cut the sandal, or sole, by the pattern. (Mgh.) And حَذَا النَّعْلَ بِالنَّعْلِ, (S, Msb, K,) inf. n. حَذْوٌ, (S,) He measured the sandal, or sole, by the sandal, or sole; or made it according to the measure thereof; (S, Msb, K;) and cut it according to the pattern and measure thereof: (Msb:) and in like manner, حَذَا القُذَّةَ بِالقُذَّةِ He measured the feather for an arrow by the feather for an arrow; or made it according to the measure thereof. (K.) Hence the prov., (TA,) حَذْوَ القُذَّةِ [meaning (assumed tropical:) With like for like ]. (S, TA.) And the saying, جَزَيْتُهُ حَدْوَالنَّعْلِ بِالنَّعْلِ, meaning (assumed tropical:) I requited him [ with like for like ]. (Har p. 43. [See also Freytag's Arab. Prov. i. 345.]) One says also, هُوَ جَيَّدُ الحِذَاآءِ He is good in respect of proportion, or conformation. (TA.) And [in like manner] a beast is said to be حَسَنُ الحِذَاآءِ Goodly, or beautiful, in respect of proportion, or conformation. (TA in art. حذى.) ― -b2- [And hence,] حَذَاحَذْوَ زَيْدٍ (assumed tropical:) [ He did as Zeyd did; ] he did the deed of Zeyd. (K.) And مِثَالَهُ ↓ احتذى, (S, K,) or عَلَى مِثَالِهِ, (T, TA,) (tropical:) He followed, or imitated, his example (T, S, K, TA) in his affair, or case: (TA:) or احتذى بِهِ he followed, or imitated, his example in his affairs: (Msb:) syn. اقتدى. (T, S, Msb, K.) ― -b3- See also 3, in three places. ― -b4- حَذَاهُ نَعْلًا He put on him (namely a man [i. e. on his foot ]) a sandal; as also ↓ احذاهُ: (K:) the former is authorized by As, but the latter is disallowed by him: Az explains the former by حمله على نعل [as though meaning he gave him a sandal upon which to walk; like as حَمَلَهُ for حَمَلَهُ عَلَى دَابَّةٍ means “ he gave him a beast upon which to ride ”]: and accord. to J, (TA,) نَعْلًا ↓ أَحْذَيْتُهُ signifies I gave him a sandal. (S, TA.) ― -b5- حَذَا زَيْدًا, (K,) inf. n. حَذْوٌ, (TA,) He gave to Zeyd. (K, TA. [See also 4 in art. حذى.]) ― -b6- حَذَامِنْهُ حِذْوَةً He cut off from it a piece of flesh-meat. (TA.) ― -b7- حَذَا الجِلْدَ, aor. يَحْذُو, i. q. قَوَّرَهُ [ He cut a piece out of the skin, generally meaning in a round form ]. (TA.) ― -b8- حَذَا لسَانَهُ, (K,) aor. as above, inf. n. حَذُوٌ, (TA,) (tropical:) It (wine, or beverage,) bit his tongue; (AHn, K, TA;) a dial. var. of حَذَى, aor. يَحْذى, which is the word well known. (AHn, TA.) -A2- حَذَا التُّرَابَ فِى وُجُوهِهِمْ i. q. حَثَاهُ [i. e. He poured with his hand, threw, or cast, the dust in their faces ]. (IAth, K.)

3 حَاذَاهُ ذ , (S, Mgh, Msb, K,) inf. n. مُحَاذَاةٌ (Msb, TA) and حَذَاآءٌ, (Msb,) He, (Mgh, Msb,) and it, (Mgh,) was, or became, over against, or opposite to, him, or it; (S, Mgh, TA;) faced, or fronted, him, or it; (TA;) syn. اآزَاهُ, (Msb, * K,) and قَابَلَهُ; (TA;) as also ↓ حَذَاهُ, aor. يَحْذُو, (Mgh, Msb,) inf. n. حَذْوٌ: (Msb:) [and] the latter, (S,) or each, (Har p. 43,) signifies he sat over against, or opposite to, him, or it. (S, and Har ibid.) رَأْسَهَامِنَ الشَّعَرِ وَلَا يَسْتَرْسِلُ ↓ مَا يَحْذُو means ما يُحَاذِيهِ [i. e. What is against, or opposite to, her head, of the hair, and does not hang down below it]. (Mgh. [See another ex. in an explanation of اآخِرَةٌ.]) One also says, أَتَيْتُ أَرْضًا بَقْلُهَا عَلَى أَفْوَاهِ غَنَمِهَا ↓ قَدْ حَذَا I came to a land the herbs of which were opposite to the mouths of its sheep, or goats, not rising beyond them. (Sh, TA.) And بِحِذَاآءِ هٰذِهِ الشَّجَرَةِ ↓ تَحَذَّ Be thou over against, or opposite to, this tree. (TA.) ― -b2- حَاذَتْهَا, said of a girl, She matched her, namely, another girl; she was, or became, her match, fellow, or equal; syn. تَارَبَتْهَا. (A and TA in art. ترب.) ― -b3- [Hence مُحَاذَاةٌ signifying A conformity, a mutual resemblance, or a correspondence, with regard to sound, of two words occurring near together; like اِزْدِوَاجٌ &c.: see art. زوج.]

4 أَحْذَوَ see 1, in two places. ― -b2- احذاهُ also signifies He gave him a thing. (TA.) [See حِذْوَة: and see 4 in art. حذى.]

5 تَحَذَّوَ see 3.

6 تَحَاذَا ذ They were, or became, over against, or opposite to, each other; they faced, or fronted, each other. ― -b2- And They matched each other; each of them was, or became, the match, fellow, or equal, of the other. ] ― -b3- التَّحَاذِى in selling and buying: see التَّرَاوُضُ. [This, perhaps, may belong to art. حذى.]

8 احتذى ذ He wore, or put on, a sandal, or sandals. (S, TA.) Hence the saying, خَيْرُ مَنِ ا@حْتَذَى النِّعَالَ [ The best of those who have worn sandals ]. (TA.) A rájiz says, كُلَّ الحِذَاآءِ يَحْتَذِى الحَافِى الوَقِعْ [ The barefooted whose sole is hurt by the rugged ground and stones will put on any sandal: a prov.]. (S. [See Freytag's Arab. Prov. ii. 317.]) ― -b2- See also 1.

10 استحذاهُ ذ He asked him to give him a sandal [or a pair of sandals ]. (S, * TA.)

حِذَةٌ ذ : see حِذَاآءٌ, in three places. ― -b2- You say also, جَاآءَ الرَّجُلَانِ حِذَتَيْنِ The two men came together, side by side. (TA.) [See also حِذْيَةٌ, in art. حذى.]

حَذْوٌ ذ [originally an inf. n. of 1, q. v.]: see حِذَاآءٌ, in three places.

حُذْوَةَ ذ : see حِذَاآء: -A2- and see also حُذَاوَةٌ.

حِذْوَةٌ ذ A gift; (K, and Ham p. 596;) as also ↓ حُذَيَّا; (TA;) or حُذْيَا: (Mgh, and Ham ubi suprà:) or a portion that is given of spoil. (S.) [See also حُذْيَا, in art. حذى.] ― -b2- And A piece, (K,) or small piece, (TA,) of flesh-meat: (K, TA:) or a piece of flesh cut lengthwise; or so حِذْيَةٌ, accord. to some. (Mgh.) [See also حِذْيَةٌ, in art. حذى.] -A2- See also حِذَاآءٌ, in three places.

حِذَاآءٌ ذ A sandal, or sole; syn. نَعْلٌ; (S, Msb, TA;) vulgarly called حذوة: (TA [there written without any syll. signs]:) pl. أَحْذِيَةٌ. (Msb.) ― -b2- (assumed tropical:) The sole of a camel's foot and of the hoof of a horse (S, Msb, TA) or similar beast; (Msb;) as being likened to a نَعْل. (TA.) Hence the saying in a trad., (S, * Msb, * TA,) respecting a stray she-camel, (Msb, TA,) مَعَهَا حِذَاؤُهَا وَسِقَاؤُهَا (S, Msb, TA) (assumed tropical:) With her are her foot, with which she may defend herself from the smaller beasts of prey, and [ her stomach, which, by her replenishing it, affords her means of long] endurance of the want of water: (Msb:) [or] it means that she has ability to traverse the land and to go to water. (TA.) ― -b3- (assumed tropical:) A wife; because she is مَوْطُوْءَة, like the نَعْل. (TA.) -A2- Also, [originally an inf. n.,] i. q. اـِزَاآءٌ [The front, as meaning the part, place, or location, that is over against, opposite, facing, fronting, or in front ]. (S, K.) One says, جَلَسَ بِحِذَائِهِ [ He sat in the place over against, opposite to, facing, or fronting, him; or simply he sat over against, &c.]. (S.) And هُوَ حِذَاآءَكَ and ↓ حِذْوَتَكَ and ↓ حِذَتَكَ [in the CK, erroneously, حِذْوَتُكَ and حِذْيُكَ,] and ↓ مُحَاذَاكَ [ He, or it, is over against, opposite to, facing, or fronting, thee ]; (K;) and ↓ هو حُذَيَّاكَ; i. e. بِاـِزَائِكَ. (K in art. حذى.) And دَارِى حِذَاآءَ (S) and ↓ حِذْوَةَ داره (S, K) and داره ↓ حُذْوَةَ (S) and داره ↓ حِذَةَ (S, K) and داره ↓ حَذْوَ and داره ↓ حِذْوَةُ and داره ↓ حِذَةُ and داره ↓ حَذْوُ (K) i. e. اـِزَاآءَهَا [ My house is over against, &c., his house ]; (K;) and [so] بِحِذَاآءِ داره. (Msb.) And ↓ رَفَعَ يَدَيْهِ حَذْوَ أُذُنَيْهِ and حِذَاآءَ اذنيه [ He raised his hands over against, or opposite to, not higher than, his ears ]: (Mgh, * Msb:) both are correct expressions. (Mgh.) [Hence, عَلَى حِذَاآءٍ وَاحِدٍ Corresponding to, or matching, one another; uniformly disposed. ] -A3- See also art. حذى.

حُذَاوَةٌ ذ and حِذَاوَةٌ and ↓ حُذْوَةٌ What falls, and is thrown away, of skins, when they are pared and cut: whence the saying in a trad. respecting the bridal furniture of Fátimeh, that one of her two beds was stuffed with حذوة of the makers of sandals. (TA.)

حُذَيَّا ذ [perhaps belonging to this art., like as حُدَيَّا and حُجَيَّا belong to arts. حدو and حجو]: see حِذْوَةٌ, and art. حذى: -A2- and see also حِذَاآءٌ.

حَذَّاآءٌ ذ A maker of sandals: whence the prov., مَنْ يَكُ حَذَّاآءً تَجُدْ نَعْلَاهُ [ He who is a maker of sandals, his pair of sandals is good ]. (TA. [Freytag (Arab. Prov. ii. 665) gives it thus: مَنْ يَكُنْ أَبُوهُ حَذَّاآءً تَجُدْ نَعْلَاهُ He whose father is a maker of sandals, his pair of sandals is good. ])

حَاذٍ ذ A man wearing a sandal [or a pair of sandals ]. (TA.)

هُوَ مُحَاذَاكَ ذ : see حِذَاآءٌ.

1 حَذَتِ الشَّفْرَةُ النَعْلَ ذ , [aor. and inf. n. as below,] The shoemaker's knife cut the sandal, or sole. (S.) And حَذَى يَدَهُ He cut, or cut off, his arm, or hand, (T, S, K,) with a knife. (S.) And حَذَى أُذُنَهُ He cut off a piece of his ear. (TA.) ― -b2- حَذَى الجِلْدَ, aor. يَحْذِى, He, or it, wounded the skin. (TA.) And حَذَى الاـِهَابَ, (K,) inf. n. حَذْىٌ, (TA,) He rent, or tore, much, or he made many holes in, the skin, or hide. (K, TA.) ― -b3- حَذَى لِسَانَهُ, (S, Mgh, K,) and فَاهُ (S) or فَمَهُ, (TA,) aor. as above, (S, Mgh, Msb,) and so the inf. n., (S, TA,) (tropical:) It, namely, vinegar, and wine, or beverage, (S, Mgh,) and [sour] milk, (Mgh, K,) &c., (K,) bit his tongue, (S, Mgh, K,) and his mouth; (S, TA;) had a burning effect upon it, like cutting. (Mgh.) ― -b4- حَذَى فُلَانًا بِلِسَانِهِ (tropical:) He spoke evil of such a one, saying of him what would grieve him if he heard it; reviled, vilified, or vituperated, him; (K, TA;) [ as though ] he cut him with his tongue. (TA.) A man who does so is termed ↓ مِحْذَاآءٌ. (K, TA.) -A2- See also what next follows.

4 احذاهُ ذ ; (S, Mgh, K;) as also ↓ حَذَاهُ, first pers. حَذَيْتُ; (Mgh;) He gave him a thing, or somewhat: (Mgh:) he gave him a portion, or share, of spoil. (S, Mgh, K.) [See also 4 in art. حذو.] ― -b2- [Hence,] أَحْذَيْتُهُ طَعْنَةً (tropical:) [ I gave him a thrust, piercing thrust, or stab; ] I thrust, pierced, or stabbed, him. (Lh, TA.)

6 تحاذى القَوْمُ فِيمَا بَيْنَهُمْ ذ (tropical:) The party, or campany of men, divided among themselves (K, TA) water equally; like تصافنوا. (TA.) ― -b2- See also 6 in art. حذو.

حِذْىٌ ذ : see حِذْيَةٌ.

حُذْيَةٌ ذ , with damm, The diamond with which stones are cut and bored. (TA.)

حِذْيَةٌ ذ A piece cut lengthwise (As, S, K) of flesh-meat: (As, S:) or a small piece (K) thereof. (TA.) [See also حِذْوَةٌ, in art. حذو.] Hence the saying in a trad., اـِنَّمَا فَاطِمَةُ حِذْيَةٌ مِنِّى يَقْبِضُنِى مَا يَقْبِضُهَا (assumed tropical:) [ Fátimeh is only a piece of me: what distresses, or grieves, her, distresses, or grieves, me ]. (TA.) ― -b2- جاآءَا حِذْيَتَيْنِ They two came side by side: (K, TA:) and so جَاآءَا, mentioned in art. حذو. (TA.) -A2- A gift; as also ↓ حِذْىٌ (TA) and ↓ حُذْيَا, (Mgh, and Ham p. 596,) or ↓ حُذَيَّا, (TA in art. حذو,) and حِذْوَةٌ. (K in that art., and Ham ubi suprà.) [See also حُذَيَّا.]

حُذْيَا ذ : see what next precedes. ― -b2- Also A share, or portion, of spoil; (S, K;) and so ↓ حُذَيَّا and حُذَاية (K) and ↓ حَذِيَّةٌ (S, K) and حِذْوَةٌ. (S.)

حِذَاآءٌ ذ The gathering of the crop of grapes: or the time thereof: syn. قِطَافٌ. (K.) -A2- See also art. حذو.

حُذَايَةٌ ذ : see حُذْيَا.

حَذِيَّةٌ ذ : see حُذْيِا.

حُذَيَّا ذ A gift, or present, for bringing good news. (K, TA.) See also حِذْيَةٌ. You say, أَخْذَهُ بِيْنَ الحُذَيَّا وَالخُلْسَةِ He took it as something between a gift and a thing carried off by force. (ISd, K.) ― -b2- See also حُذْيَا. -A2- هُوَ حُذَيَّاكَ: see حِذَاآءٌ, in art. حذو.

مِحْذًى ذ A large, or broad, knife; or such as is used by a shoemaker or maker of sandals. (TA.)

مِحْذَاآءٌ ذ : see 1.

حَرَّ حر , see. pers. حَرِرْتَ, aor. حَرَ3َ ; (S, A, Msb, K;) and حَرَّ, sec. pers. حَرَرْتَ, aor. حَرِ3َ and حَرُ3َ ; inf. n. حَرٌّ and حُرُورٌ (S, Msb, K) and حَرَارَةٌ, (S, K,) or this is a simple subst., (Msb,) and حِرَّةٌ; (TA;) and ↓ احرّ, (S, K,) a dial. var. heard by Ks, (S,) and mentioned by Zj and IKtt; (TA;) It (a day, S, A, Msb, K, and food, Msb) was, or became, hot; (A, Msb, K;) or very hot. (TA.) And حَرَّتِ النَّارُ, sec. pers. حَرِرْتِ, aor. حَرَ3َ , The fire burned up, and became fierce or hot. (Msb.) ― -b2- See also 10. ― -b3- حَرَّ, sec. pers. حَرِرْتَ, aor. حَرَ3َ , inf. n. حَرَّةٌ, He (a man, S) thirsted; was, or became, thirsty. (S, K.) Lh mentions حَرِرْتَ يَا رَجُلُ, aor. حَرَ3َ , inf. n. حِرَّةٌ [perhaps a mistake for حَرَّةٌ] and حَرَارَةٌ: [app. in the same sense:] ISd says, I think he means [from] الحَرُّ, not الحُرِّيَّةُ. (TA.) And حَرَرٌ [an inf. n. of the same verb] signifies The liver's becoming dry from thirst or grief. (TA.) -A2- حَرَّ, sec. pers. حَرِرْتَ, aor. حَرَ3َ , (S, A, * Mgh, Msb, K,) inf. n. حَرَارٌ, (S, Mgh, Msb, K,) He (a slave, S) became free: (S, A, Mgh, Msb, K:) and ↓ تحرّر in the same sense is agreeable with analogy. (Mgh.) ― -b2- And حَرَّ, sec. pers. and aor. as above, inf. n. حُرِّيَّةٌ, He (a man) was freeborn, or of free origin. (S.) -A3- حَرَّ, [sec. pers. حَرَرْتَ,] aor. حَرُ3َ , inf. n. حَرٌّ, He heated water (A, * K) &c. (A.) -A4- حَرَّ, aor. حَرِ3َ , He cooked [ what is termed ] حَرِيرَة: (K:) and حَرَّتْ she made حريرة. (A.) Hence, in a trad., ذُرِّى وَأَنَا أَحِرُّ لَكِ Sprinkle thou the flour, and I will make of it حريرة for thee. (TA.)

2 حرّر حرر , inf. n. تَحْرِيرٌ, He freed, liberated, or emancipated, a slave. (A, Mgh, Msb.) And حرّر رَقَبَةً He freed a neck [i. e. a slave ]. (S, K.) ― -b2- Also He set apart a child for the worship of God and the service of the mosque or oratory: (S, TA:) or he devoted him to the service of the church as long as he should live, so that he could not relinquish it while he retained his religion. (TA.) ― -b3- Also, inf. n. as above, (tropical:) He made a writing &c. accurate, or exact; (S, K;) he made a writing beautiful, or elegant, and free from defects, by forming its characters rightly, and rectifying its faults : (A:) he wrote a writing well, or elegantly, and accurately, or exactly; (TK;) he wrote well, or elegantly : (KL:) and he made an account, or a reckoning, accurate, without mistake, and without omission, and without erasure. (TA.) [And simply (tropical:) He wrote a letter &c.]

4 احرّ احر أحار أحر أحرى حار حر حرى : see 1. ― -b2- Also His (a man's) camels became thirsty. (S, K.) -A2- Also He (God) made a man's liver to become dry by reason of thirst or grief. (TA.) And He made a man's bosom thirsty; as in the saying, used by the Arabs in cursing a man, مَا لَهُ أَحَرَّ ا@للّٰهُ صَدْرَهُ [ What aileth him? May God make his bosom thirsty ]: or the meaning is هَامَتَهُ [app. here used as signifying the bird called هَامَة, in the form of which the soul was believed to issue from a slain man, and to call incessantly for drink until the slaughter of the slayer]. (TA.)

10 استحرّ أستحر استحر ٱستحر (S, K) and ↓ حَرَّ (S, TA) (tropical:) It (slaughter) was, or became, vehement, (S, K,) and great in extent; (TA;) and the same is said of death. (TA.) -A2- استحرّها He asked, or desired, of her [ that she should make what is termed ] حَرِيرَة. (A.) [See 1, last signification.]

حِرٌ حذر : see حِرٌّ, below; and see also art. حرح.

حِرِىٌّ حر حران حرى حري حريي : see art. حرح.

حَرٌّ حر Heat; contr. of بَرْدٌ; (S, A, Mgh, Msb, K;) as also ↓ حَرَارَةٌ, (S, * Msb, * K,) contr. of بُرُودَةٌ; (S;) and ↓ حُرُورٌ (S, * Msb, * K) and ↓ حِرَّةٌ: (TA:) [see 1, first sentence:] pl. [of the first] حُرُورٌ and ↓ أَحَارِرُ; (K;) the latter anomalous, both as to its measure and in the non-incorporation of the first ر into the second: it is mentioned on the authority of AZ and others; but IDrd doubts its correctness; and the author of the Wá'ee mentions أَحَارُّ as a pl. form, but apparently to avoid contrariety to rule: the pl. of ↓ حَرَارَةٌ as a simple subst., or as an inf. n., but more probably as the former, is حَرَارَاتٌ. (TA.) ― -b2- (assumed tropical:) A burning of the heart, from pain and wrath and distress or affliction or trouble or fatigue. (TA.) حُرٌّ حر Free, ingenuous, or free-born; contr. of عَبْدٌ: (S, A, Mgh, Msb, K:) fem. حُرَّةٌ: (S, Mgh, Msb, K:) pl. masc. أَحْرَارٌ (Msb, K) and حِرَارٌ; (IJ, K;) not حَرَارٌ, as some say; nor is حِرَارٌ an inf. n. as well as a pl., as others say: (MF:) pl. fem. حَرَائِرُ, (Msb, K,) contr. to analogy, and, as Suh says, the only instance of the kind except شَجَرٌ مَرَائِرُ as pl. of شَجَرَةٌ مُرَّةٌ; for the [regular] pl. of فُعْلَةٌ is فْعَلٌ; but حُرَّةٌ has this form of pl. because it is syn. with كَرِيمَةٌ and عَقِيلَةٌ [as will be seen in what follows]; and مُرَّةٌ, because it means خَبِيثَةُ الطَّعْمِ. (Msb.) Omar said to the women who used to go forth to the mosque, لَأَرُدَّنَّكْنَّ حَرَائِرَ [lit. I will assuredly make you to become free women ]; meaning I will assuredly make you to keep to the houses : for the curtain is lowered before free women; not before slavewomen. (TA.) [See also حُرِّيَّةٌ.] ― -b2- (tropical:) Generous, noble, or well-born; like as عَبْدٌ is used to signify “ ignoble, ” or “ base-born: ” (Mgh:) and so the fem. حُرَّةٌ; (S, Mgh, K;) applied to a woman; (TA;) and to a she-camel: (S:) and so the masc. applied to a horse. (K, TA.) [Hence,] بَاتَتْ بِلَيْلَةِ حُرَّةٍ (tropical:) [ She passed a virgin's night ] is said of her whose husband has not been able to devirginate her (S, A, K) in the night when she has been first brought to him: (TA:) because the حُرَّة is modest and repugnant: (Har p. 418:) in the contr. case one says, بِلَيْلَةِ شَيْبَاآءَ: (S, L:) and one says also بِلَيْلَةٍ حُرَّةٍ; and بِلَيْلَةٍ شَيْبَاآءَ. (TA.) [And hence,] لَيْلَةُ حُرَّة and لَيْلَةٌ حُرَّةٌ signify also (assumed tropical:) The first night of the [ lunar ] month : (K:) its last night is called لَيْلَةُ شَيْبَاآءَ and لَيْلَةٌ شَيْبَاآءُ. (TA.) You say also وَجْهٌ حُرٌّ (tropical:) [app. meaning An ingenuous countenance ]. (A.) ― -b3- (tropical:) Generous, or ingenuous, in conduct : as in the saying of Imra-el-Keys, لَعَمْرُكَ مَا قَلْبِى اـِلَى أَهْلِهِ بِحْرْ [ By thy life, my heart is not generous in conduct to its, or his, companion ]; meaning that it is averse therefrom, and inclines to another. (Az, TA.) [Hence,] سَحَابَةٌ حُرَّةٌ (tropical:) A cloud bountiful with rain; (A;) or abounding with rain. (S, K.) ― -b4- (tropical:) A good deed or action. (K, TA.) You say, مَاهٰذَا مِنْكَ بِحُرٍّ (tropical:) This is not good, or well, of thee. (S, A.) ― -b5- (assumed tropical:) Anything good, or excel-lent; as poetry, &c. (TA.) You say كَلَامٌ حُرٌّ (tropical:) [app. meaning good, or excellent, speech or language ]. (A.) ― -b6- (tropical:) Good earth, or clay, and sand: (K, TA:) or earth, or clay, in which is no sand : (S, A:) and sand in which is no earth or clay : (S:) or sand that has good herbage : (A:) you say رَمْلَةٌ حُرَّةٌ; (S, A;) and the pl. is حَرَائِرُ: (S:) or sand in which is no mixture of any other thing : (Msb: [accord. to which, this is the primary meaning of the word, whence the meaning of “ free, ” i. e. the “ contr. of عَبْدٌ: ” but accord. to the A and TA, it is tropical:]) and أَرْضٌ حُرَّةٌ (tropical:) land in which is no salt earth : (A:) or in which is no sand : as applied to that upon which no tithe is levied, it is post-classical. (Mgh.) ― -b7- (tropical:) The middle, (S, A, K,) and best part, (TA,) of sand, (S, K, TA,) and of a house. (S, A, TA.) ― -b8- (assumed tropical:) The best of anything; (K, TA;) as, for instance, of fruit. (TA.) ― -b9- Also sing. of أَحْرَار in the term أَحْرَارُ البُقُولِ, (TA,) which means (tropical:) Herbs, or leguminous plants, that are eaten without being cooked; (S, A;) as also البُقُولِ ↓ حُرِّيَّةُ: (A:) or such as are slender and succulent; and ذُكُورُ البُقُولِ means “ such as are thick and rough: ” (AHeyth:) or the former are such as are slender and soft; and the latter, “ such as are hard and thick: ” (TA in art. عشب:) or the former are such as are slender and sweet; and the latter, “ such as are thick, and inclining to bitterness: ” (TA in art. ذكر:) or the former are such as are rough; and these are three, namely, النَّفَلُ and الحُرْبُثُ and القَفْعَاآءُ: or الحُرُّ is applied to a plant of the kind called النَّجِيل, growing in salt grounds. (TA.) ― -b10- حُرُّ الوَجْهِ (tropical:) What appears of the face : (K, TA:) or what appears of the elevated part of the cheek; (S;) [i. e.] the ball, or most prominent place, of the cheek; (W p. 28;) and ↓ الحُرَّةُ signifies [ the same, or] the elevated part of the cheek : (TA:) or the former is what fronts one, of the face: or the four tracks of the tears, from each corner of each eye. (TA.) One says, لَطَمَهُ عَلَى حُرِّ وَجْهِهِ (tropical:) [ He slapped him on the ball of his cheek ]. (S, TA. *) -A2- The young one of a gazelle. (S, K.) ― -b2- The young one of a serpent: (S, K:) or of a slender serpent: or it is a slender serpent, like the جَانّ, of a white colour: or a white serpent: or a serpent, absolutely. (TA.) ― -b3- The young one of a pigeon: (S, K:) or the male thereof. (TA.) ― -b4- سَاقُ حُرٍّ [is said to signify] The male of the قَمَارِىّ [or kind of collared turtle-doves of which the female is called قُمْرِيَّة (see قُمْرِىٌّ)]: (S, Msb, K:) Homeyd Ibn-Thowr says, وَمَا هَاجَ هٰذَا الشَّوْقَ اـِلَّا حَمَامَةٌ دَعَتْ سَاقَ حُرٍّ تَرْحَةً وَتَرَنُّمَا [ And nothing excited this desire but a pigeon (see حَمَامٌ) that called ساق حرّ, sorrowing and warbling ]: or, accord. to IJ, the right reading is دَعَتْ سَاقَ حُرٍّ فِى حَمَامٍ تَرَنُّمَا [ that called ساق حرّ among other pigeons, warbling ]: but some say that الساق is the pigeon; and حرّ, its young one: or ساق حرّ is the cry of the قمارىّ, and is an onomatopœia: accord. to Aboo- 'Adnán, it is ↓ ساق حَرّ, and means the warbling of the pigeon: and Sakhr El-Gheí makes it a compound, and indecl.; using the phrase, تُنَادِى سَاقَ حُرَّ [ she calls ساق حرّ]: on which IJ observes, As says, ساق حرّ is thought to mean the young one of the bird; but it is her cry: and he (IJ) adds, the fact that the poet [Sakhr] does [...]

حِرٌّ حر (Msb, K) and ↓ حِرٌ (S, Mgh, Msb, and K, in art. حرح) The vulva, or pudendum, of a woman: (Msb, K:) the former a dial. var. of the latter; (K;) originally حِرْحٌ [q. v.]. (Msb.)
