مُزَاوَلٌ ذ pass. part. n. of 3: one says, مَا زَالَ هٰذَا الأَمْرُ مُزَاوَلًا بِأَيْدِيهِمْ (assumed tropical:) [ This affair ceased not to be striven, or sought, to be accomplished by means of their hands ]. (TA.) -A2- Also Frightened by a زَوْل, i. e. a form, or figure, appearing in the night. (TA.)

1 زَوVنَ [زَانَهُ, aor. يَزُونُهُ, is a dial. var. of زَانَهُ having for its aor. يَزِينُهُ.] An Arab woman of the desert is related to have said to IAar, اـِنَّكَ لَتَزُونُنَا اـِذَا طَلَعْتَ, meaning تَزِينُنَا [i. e. Verily thou gracest us when thou comest to us (عَلَيْنَا)]. (TA.)

زَانٌ ذ Indigestion; syn. بَشَمٌ; for النَّشَمُ in the copies of the K is a mistranscription for البَشَمُ; (TA;) expl. by Ed-Dubeyreeyeh as syn. with تُخْمَةٌ; as in the phrase, لَيْسَ يَشْكُو الزَّانَ [ He does not complain of indigestion ]: (Fr, TA:) and so ↓ زَانَةٌ: (K and TA in art. زين:) or this signifies a single fit of indigestion. (TA in that art.) -A2- [In the present day, applied to The beech-tree; and its wood: as a coll. gen. n.: n. un. with ة: see also زَانَةٌ below.]

زَوْنٌ ذ : see زِوَنٌّ.

زُونٌ ذ An idol: and anything that is taken as a deity and worshipped, (S, K, * TA,) beside God: as also زُورٌ: [an arabicized word:] in Pers. \خٱ698ئُونْ. (TA.) ― -b2- And A place in which idols are collected and set up. (K.) It is said to be from زِينَةٌ. (TA.) [But it may rather be from زُونَةٌ as a dial. var. of زِينَةٌ.] -A2- See also زِوَنٌّ.

زَانَةٌ ذ A thing like a مِزْرَاق [or javelin ], which the Deylem (الدَّيْلَم) cast: [perhaps made of the wood of the beech, (see زَانٌ, latter sentence,) and therefore so called:] pl. زَانَاتٌ. (Msb.) -A2- See also زَانٌ, former sentence.

زُونَةٌ ذ i. q. زِينَةٌ [ An ornament, &c.], (K,) in one of the dialects. (TA.) ― -b2- And An intelligent woman. (IAar, K.)

زِوَنٌّ ذ Short; (S, K;) applied to a man; (S;) and so, thus applied, ↓ زَوْنٌ and ↓ زُونٌ, (K,) of which two, the former is the more known: (TA:) fem. زِوَنَّةٌ, (S, K,) applied to a woman. (S.)

زُوَانٌ ذ and زِوَانٌ (S, M, Msb, K) and زَوَانٌ (K) i. q. زُؤَانٌ [q. v. in art. زأن]. (S, M, Msb, K.)

طَعَامٌ مَزُونٌ ذ Wheat in which is زُوَان [or the grain of a certain noxious weed, app. darnel-grass: مزون being a pass. part. n. of which no verb is mentioned]. (TA.)

1 زَوَاهُ ذ , (K,) aor. يَزْوِيهِ, (TA,) inf. n. زَىٌّ and زُوِىٌّ, (K, TA,) the latter [accord. to the CK زَوْىٌ, but it is correctly] like عُتِىٌّ, (TA,) He put it aside, or away, or apart; or removed it from its place. (K.) You say, زَوَىَ عَنْهُ كَذَا, inf. n. زُوِىٌّ, He averted, diverted, or removed, from him such a thing; turned, put, or sent, it away, or back, from him. (TA.) ― -b2- And زَوَى سِرَّهُ عَنْهُ He concealed his secret from him. (K.) ― -b3- Also (K) زَوَاهُ, (S, Msb, K,) aor. as above, inf. n. زَىٌّ, (Msb, TA,) He drew it, collected it, or gathered it, together; contracted it, or grasped it. (S, Msb, K.) It is said in a trad., زُوِيَتْ لِىَ الأَرْضُ فَأْرِيتُ مَشَارِقَهَا وَمَغَارِبَهَا [ The earth was collected together to me, and I was shown its eastern parts and its western parts ]. (S, TA.) And you say, زَوَى المَالَ, (S, Msb,) inf. n. زَىٌّ, (S,) He drew, or collected, together, or he grasped, the property, (Msb,) عَنْ وَارِثِهِ [ from its inheritor ]. (S.) And زَوَى مَا بَيْنَ عَيْنَيْهِ (S, TA) He (a man, S) drew together, or contracted, the part between his eyes. (TA.) And جَاآءَنَا بِصَرْبَةٍ تَزْوِى الوَجْهَ [ He brought us some very sour milk such as contracts the face, or makes it to wrinkle ]. (S in art. صرب.) And تَزْوِى الوُجُوهَ said of a cold north wind, It contracts [or wrinkles ] the faces: a phrase used by Tarafeh Ibn-El-'Abd. (Ham p. 632.)

2 زوّى ذ , inf. n. تَزْوِيَةٌ: see 5. -A2- زَيَّيْتُهُ, (S, Msb, K,) which by rule should be زَوَّيْتُهُ, (S, Msb,) but is made to accord with زِىٌّ in order to facilitate the pronunciation, (Msb,) inf. n. accord. to the K تَزْيِيَةٌ, but correctly, as Lth says, تَزِيَّةٌ, in measure like تَحِيَّةٌ, (TA,) I invested him with, or made him to have, a زِىّ [i. e. garb, guise, &c.]; (S, * Msb, K, * TA;) by means of, or with, such a thing: you say, زَيَّيْتُهُ بِكَذَا [which may be rendered I invested, decked, or adorned, him with such a thing; agreeably with what follows]. (Msb.) Accord. to Fr, they say, زَيَّيْتُ الجَارِيَةَ, meaning I invested the girl, or young woman, with a garb, or guise, &c.; and decked, or adorned, her. (TA.) ― -b2- You say also, زوّى الكَلَامَ, meaning He prepared the speech in his mind; like زَوَّرَهُ. (TA.) -A3- زَيَّيْتُ زَايًا and زَوَّيْتُ زَايًا [mean I wrote, or uttered, a ز]: some [hold the ا in زاى to be originally ى, and therefore] say زَيَّيْتُ: others [hold it to be originally و, and therefore] say زَوَّيْتُ. (IB, on the letter أَلِف.) Zeyd Ibn-Thábit said, in relation to the expression in the Kur [ii. 261] نُنْشِزُهَا, [accord. to one reading, or reciting,] هِىَ زَاىٌ فَزَيِّهَا, meaning [ It is زاى, therefore make thou it زاى in thy reading, or reciting; or] read thou it, or recite thou it, with the زاى. (S.)

5 تزوّى ذ He was, or became, [or placed himself, ] in a زَاوِيَة, i. e. corner, of a house or chamber; as also ↓ زوّى, (K,) inf. n. تَزْوِيَةٌ; (TA;) and ↓ انزوى. (K.) -A2- تَزَيَّا, from الزِّىُّ; (K, KL;) or تَزَيَّا بِزِىٍّ; (Lth, MA;) He invested himself with a garb, guise, or dress; [or with an external appearance; ] (MA, KL;) he decked, or adorned, himself. (MA.) You say of a man, تزيّا بِزِىٍّ حَسَنٍ [ He invested himself with a beautiful, or goodly, garb, &c.]. (Lth, TA.) Hence the saying of El-Mutanebbee, وَقَدْ يَتَزَيَّا بِالهَوَى غَيْرُ أَهْلِهِ وَيَسْتَصْحِبُ الاـِنْسَانُ مَنْ لَا يُلَائِمُهْ (TA:) i. e. [ And verily, or sometimes, or often, one who is not entitled to it ] assumes the guise of love; and the man asks to be his companion him who is not suited to him: (W p. 374:) his disciple Ibn-Jinnee, however, objected to him his saying يتزيّا, and expressed his opinion that the correct word is يَتَزَوَّى; and El-Mutanebbee admitted that he did not know the former word in any [classical] poetry, nor in any lexicological book, but asserted the verb in use to be only تَزَيَّا: (MF, TA:) in the M it is said that IJ held تَزَيَّا to be originally تَزَوْيَا, and the و to be changed into ى because quiescent, and incorporated into the ى preceded by it. (TA.)

7 انزوى ذ It was, or became, put aside, or away, or apart; or removed from its place. (K.) ― -b2- اِنْزَوَتِ الجِلْدَةُ فِىالنَّارِ The piece of skin became contracted, or shrivelled, or shrunk, in the fire. (S.) And انزوى مَا بَيْنَ عَيْنَيْهِ The part between his eyes became drawn together, or contracted. (TA.) And انزوى القَوْمُ بَعْضُهُمْ اـِلَى بَعْضٍ The people, or party, drew together, one portion of them to another portion. (TA.) ― -b3- See also 5, first sentence.

زِىٌّ ذ , (S, Msb, K, &c.,) originally زِوْىٌ, (S, Msb,) Garb, guise, dress, habit, fashion of dress, and aspect, or outward appearance; syn. لِبَاسٌ, (S, TA,) and هَيْئَةٌ, (Fr, Msb, K, TA,) and مَنْظَرٌ: (Fr, TA:) pl. أَزْيَاآءٌ. (K.) [In the Kur xix. 75,] some read أَحْسَنُ أَثَاثًا وَزِيًّا [ Better in respect of household-goods and in respect of garb, &c.]: others read رِيًّا, with ر: (TA:) and رِئْيًا: and رِيْئًا: and رِيًا. (Bd.)

زَاىٌ ذ , (Kr, S, K, &c.,) in which the ا, accord. to Lth, is originally ى, but accord. to Sb and IJ it is و, (TA,) A certain letter (i. e. ز); (S, TA;) [in spelling, pronounced زَاىْ; and] also called ↓ زَاآءٌ, (Kr, S, K,) and ↓ زًا, and [in spelling (see the first sentence of art. ب)] ↓ زَا, (Kr, K, but omitted in some copies of the K,) this last being indecl., (Kr, TA,) and ↓ زَىٌّ (K) and [in spelling] ↓ زَىْ: (Kr, K:) of all which, the first is that which is held in [most] repute: (TA:) and this and زَاآءٌ may be meant by J's saying, الزَّاىُ حَرْفٌ يُمَدُّ وَيُقْصَرُ وَلَا يُكْتَبُ اـِلَّا بِيَاآءٍ بَعْدَ الأَلِفِ; though the author of the K asserts J to have erred in saying this: (MF, TA:) the pl. is أَزْوَاآءٌ and أَزْيَاآءٌ, (Kudot;,) the former or the latter accord. to different opinions, (TA,) and أَزْوٍ and أَزْىٍ, (K,) each [originally] of the measure أَفْعُلٌ. (TA.) One says, هٰذِهِ زَاىٌ حَسَنَةٌ [ This is a beautiful; ز]: and كَتَبْتُ زَايًا صَغِيرَةً [ I wrote a small; ز]: and the like. (IJ, TA.) -A2- زَاىْ is also said by the vulgar on an occasion of wonder, and of disapproval: but [SM says,] I know not what is its origin. (TA.) [It may be from the Pers. زَىْ, or زِهِى; which are likewise said on an occasion of wonder. اـِزَّاىْ and اـِزَّىّ and اـِزَّىْ, and with أَ in the place of اـِ, are also said by the vulgar in Egypt on an occasion of wonder, and of denial, meaning How? And زَىْ is used by them for the prefix كَ, meaning Like. ]

زُوَيَّةٌ ذ : see what next follows.

زُيَيَّةٌ ذ dim. of زَاىٌّ [accord. to those who hold the ا in the latter to be originally ى, or ↓ زُوَيَّةٌ accord. to those who hold that letter to be originally و; like أُيَيَّةٌ and أُوَيَّةٌ as dims. of اآءٌ accord. to different opinions: see art. ا, in the middle of the first column]. (TA.)

زَاوِيَةٌ ذ A corner, or an angle, (رُكْن,) of a house or room or the like: (K:) of the measure فَاعِلَةٌ from زَوَى signifying جَمَعَ; because of its em- bracing (لِأَنَّهَا جَمَعَتْ) a part, or portion, (قُطْرًا,) thereof: (Msb, TA:) pl. زَوَايَا [which is irreg.; for by rule it should be زَوَاآءٍ, being originally of the measure فَوَاعِلُ, not فَعَائِلُ]. (S, K.) They say, كَمْ فِى الزَّوَايَا مِنَ الخَبَايَا [ How many hidden things are there in the corners! ]. (TA.) ― -b2- [In geometry, An angle. ― -b3- And hence, زَاوِيَةُ العَوَّاآءِ The star γ of Virgo; العَوَّاآءُ being composed of four stars, γ,δ,ε and η of Virgo, disposed nearly in the form of a capital L, with ε, δ, γ from top to bottom and η to the right. ] ― -b4- In a saying cited voce رَاوِيَةٌ, the pl. زَوَايَا is used as meaning Houses, or tents. (T in art. روى.) ― -b5- [And in the present day, the term زَاوِيَةٌ is also applied to A small mosque, or chapel: and in some instances, a building of this kind, thus called, serves as a hospice, or an asylum for poor Muslims, students and others; like رِبَاطٌ.]

زِى زِى ذ an onomatopoeia significant of The sound of the jinn, or genii. (TA.) [See also زِيزَمٌ and زِيزِيمٌ, in art. زم.]

أَزْيَبُ ذ is of the measure أَفْعَلُ, (S,) like أَحْمَرُ: (K:) or, as some say, of the measure فَعْيَل; but this is a weak assertion, for it is said that there is no Arabic word of this measure; مَرْيَمُ being a foreign proper name, and ضَهْيَأ being disputed. (MF, TA.) [In some of its senses it is an epithet, and used as such: in some, app. an epithet in which the quality of a subst. is predominant: and in some, a simple subst.: but in all its senses it is imperfectly decl.; and therefore seems to be originally an epithet.] ― -b2- Brisk, lively, sprightly, agile, or quick. (K.) ― -b3- A man who walks with short steps: (TA:) and short in stature and in step; (K, TA;) likewise applied to a man. (TA.) ― -b4- Ignoble, base, or base-born. (K.) The offspring of fornication or adultery; or the offspring of fornication, begotten on a slave. (Abu-l-Mekárim, TA.) One whose origin, or lineage, is suspected; or an adopted son; or one who claims as his father a person who is not his father; or who is claimed as a son by a person who is not his father; syn. دَعِىٌّ. (S, K.) ― -b5- A devil: (K:) accord. to some, a dial. var. of أَزَبُّ. (TA.) ― -b6- The hedge-hog. (IAar, K.) ― -b7- A disagreeable, a disapproved, or an abominable, thing or affair. (K.) ― -b8- A calamity, or misfortune. (K.) ― -b9- Much water: (AA, S:) and so أَذْيَبُ. (K in art. ذيب.) ― -b10- [ A south-easterly wind; i. e.] the [ wind termed ] نَكْبَاآء [q. v.] that blows between the صَبَا and the جَنُوب: (S, M, K:) or the south wind, or a southerly wind; syn. جَنُوبٌ; (M, K;) of the dial. of Hudheyl; so affirm Mbr in his “ Kámil ” and IF and Et-Tarábulusee: IAth says that the people of Mekkeh use this appellation much; and it is related to be God's name for what men call the جنوب: Sh says that the people of El-Yemen, and those who voyage upon the sea between Juddah and 'Adan, cali the جنوب by the name of الأَزْيَبُ, and know not any other name for it; and that is because it is boisterous, and stirs up the sea, turning it upsidedown: [whence it seems to mean the boisterous, or violent: ] ISh says that ذَاتُ أَزْيَبَ signifies any violent wind. (L,TA.) ― -b11- [Hence it appears that it signifies also Violence. ] ― -b12- Also Enmity. (S, K.) ― -b13- And Briskness, liveliness, sprightliness, agility, or quickness: (ISk, S, K, TA:) [see also أَذْيَبُ:] it is fem.: one says, مَرَّ فُلَانٌ وَلَهُ أَزْيَبُ مُنْكَرَةٌ [ Such a one passed having a disapproved briskness, &c.]: this is said when one passes quickly by reason of briskness, &c. (ISk, S.) ― -b14- And Fear, or fright: (AZ, S, K:) and so أَذْيَبُ. (K in art. ذيب.) One says, أَخَذَنِى مِنْ فُلَانٍ الأَزْيَبُ [ Fear, or fright, arising from such a one, seized me ]. (AZ, S.)

1 زَاتَهُ ذ , aor. يَزِيتُهُ, [inf. n. زَيْتٌ,] He anointed him, or it, with زَيْت, i. e. oil of the زَيْتُون [or olive ]. (Msb.) You say, زِتٌّ, meaning I anointed my head, and the head of another, with oil of the زيتون. (L.) ― -b2- And زِتُّهُ, (Lh, S, K,) aor. أَزِيتُهُ, (S, K, TA, in the CK اَزِتُّه, and so in my MS. copy of the K,) inf. n. زَيْتٌ, (K,) I put زَيْت [i. e. olive-oil ] into it; namely, the food; (S, K;) or the crumbled bread: or I prepared it therewith: (TA:) or I moistened it, or stirred it about, or moistened and mixed it, with زيت; namely, bread, and crumbled bread. (Lh, TA.) ― -b3- And زَاتَهُمْ (Lh, S, K, TA, in the CK [erroneously] زَأَتَهُمْ) He fed them with زَيْت: (Lh, K:) or he made زيت to be the seasoning of their food. (S.)

2 زَيَّتَهُمْ ذ He furnished them with زَيْت [i. e. olive-oil ] for travelling-provision; (Lh, S, A;) agreeably with a general rule relating to verbs similar to this in meaning. (Lh, TA.)

4 أَزَاتُوا ذ (in the CK [erroneously] اَزِْاَتُوا) They had much زَيْت [i. e. olive-oil ]; their زَيْت became much; (Lh, K;) agreeably with a general rule relating to verbs similar to this in meaning. (Lh, TA.)

8 اِزْدَاتَ ذ [so in the TA and in my MS copy of the K; in the CK, erroneously, اِزْدَأَتَ;] He anointed himself with زَيْت [i. e. olive-oil ]. (K.)

10 استزات ذ He sought, or demanded, زَيْت [i. e. olive-oil ]. (K.) You say, جَاؤُوا يَسْتَزِيتُونَ They came asking for زَيْت as a gift; (S, L;) or seeking, or demanding, زيت. (A.)

زَيْتٌ ذ The oil, (S, Mgh, Msb, K,) or expressed juice, (M, TA,) or مُخّ [i. e. best, or choicest, of the constituents ], (A, TA,) of the زَيْتُون [or olive ]. (S, M, A, Mgh, Msb, K.) [In the present day it is applied to Any oil. ]

زَيْتُونٌ ذ [The olive-tree; ] a certain kind of tree, (Msb, K, *) well known, (S, Msb,) whence زَيْت is obtained; (S, Msb, K;) [ a tree ] of the kind called عِضَاه; (AHn, Mgh, TA;) As says, on the authority of 'Abd-El-Melik Ibn-Sálih Ibn-'Alee, that a single tree of this kind lasts thirty thousand years; and that every tree of this kind in Palestine was planted by the ancient Greeks who are called the Yoonánees: (TA:) and the fruit of that tree: (Mgh:) or it has the latter signification, and is tropically applied to the tree: or it properly has both of these significations: (TA:) [it is a coll. gen. n.:] n. un. with ة: (S, TA:) accord. to some, the ن is a radical letter, and the ى is augmentative, because they said ارض زتنة [i. e. أَرْضٌ زَتِنَةٌ, like أَرْضٌ عَضِهَةٌ from العِضَاهُ], meaning “ a land in which are زَيْتُون; ” so that the measure is فَيْعُولٌ; and if so, its proper place is art. زتن. (TA.) Respecting the phrase in the Kur xcv. l, وَالتِّينِ وَالزَّيْتُونِ, see تِينٌ. ― -b2- [زَيْتُونُ بَنِى اـِسْرَائِيلَ Lapis Judaicus: so called because resembling an olive in shape, and found in Judæa.]

[ زَيْتُونِىٌّ ذ Of, or relating to, the olive: olivecoloured. ]

زَيَّاتٌ ذ One who sells, or expresses, زَيْت [i. e. olive-oil, and, vulgarly, any oil ]. (TA.) ― -b2- [Hence,] جَاآءَ فُلَانٌ فِى ثِيَابِ زَيَّاتٍ (assumed tropical:) Such a one came in dirty clothes. (A.)

مَزِيتٌ ذ and ↓ مَزْيُوتٌ Food into which زَيْت [i. e. olive-oil ] has been put: (S, A, K:) or prepared therewith. (TA.)

مُزْدَاتٌ ذ A man anointing himself, or who anoints himself, with زَيْت [i. e. olive-oil ]. (TA.)

مُزَيْتِيتٌ ذ dim. of مُزْدَاتٌ. (TA.)

زِيج ذ The builder's string, or line, (K in art. زوج, improperly there mentioned, TA,) which he extends to make even, thereby, the row of stones, or bricks, of the building; syn. مِطْمَرٌ [q. v.]: (TA:) [also called زِيقٌ:] an arabicized word, (K,) from [the Pers.] زِهْ, signifying “ a bowstring: ” so in the “ Shifá el-Ghaleel. ” (TA.) ― -b2- Also, as is said in the “ Mefáteeh el-'Uloom, ” [ An astronomical almanac; or a set of astronomical tables; ] a book, or writing, containing stellar calculations, year by year: in which sense, likewise, it is an arabicized word, from the Pers. زِهْ: pl. زِيَجَةٌ. (TA.) ― -b3- And The science of astronomy, or of the celestial sphere. (TA.)

زَائِجَةٌ ذ A four-sided, or round, scheme, made to exhibit the horoscope, or places [or configurations ] of the stars at the time of a birth: an astrological term [arabicized from the Pers. زَايْJَهْ]: so in the “ Shifá el-Ghaleel, ” from the “ Mefáteeh el- 'Uloom, ” by Er-Rázee. (TA.)

1 زَاحَ ذ , (S, A, K,) aor. يَزِيحُ, inf. n. زَيْحٌ (S, K) and زُيُوحٌ (MA, K) and زِيُوحٌ (K) and زَيَحَانٌ; (MA, K; [in the CK, erroneously, زَيْحان;]) and ↓ انزاح; (A, K;) It (a thing, S) became distant, or remote: (S, A, K:) it went, went away, passed away, or departed. (S, K.) You say, زَاحَتْ عِلَّتُهُ (S, A, MA) and ↓ انزاحت (A) His pretext, pretence, or excuse, [or his malady, ] became remote [or removed ], or went away. (MA.) And زَاحَ عَنِّى البَاطِلُ What was false, or vain, ceased, passed away, or went away, from me. (TA, from a trad.) ― -b2- And زَاحَ, aor. as above, i. q. تَأَخَّرَ [ He, or it, went back or backwards, &c.]. (TA in art. زح.)

4 ازاحهُ ذ He made it (a thing, S) to be distant, or remote: [ he removed it, did away with it, or caused it to cease: ] he made it to go, go away, pass away, or depart. (S, K.) Hence the saying of El-Aashà, قَدْ أَزَحْنَا هُزَالَهَا [ We had caused her leanness to cease ]. (S.) And أَزَحْتُ عِلَّتَهُ: (S, A:) ازاح عِلَّتَهُ signifies He removed his pretext, pretence, or excuse; [or his malady; ] or did away with it. (MA.)

7 اـِنْزَيَحَ see 1, in two places.

مَزَاحٌ ذ A place to which one [ goes away, or may go away; or] removes, or may remove, far away. (Ham p. 329.)
