قَطِيعٌ ذ A herd, troop, or drove; a distinct collection or number; of beasts, &c.; a flock, or bevy, of sheep, birds, &c.; a party, or group, or collection, of men, &c.; a pack of dogs. The term “ herd ” is applied to “ a collective number ” of camels by several good writers. We say a “ flock ” of sheep, and of geese; and “ herd ” or rather “ herd ” of goats; and a “ herd ” of oxen or kine, of camels, and of swine, and of antelopes; and a “ swarm ” of bees, &c. ― -b2- قَطِيعٌ A whip cut from the skin of a camel. ― -b3- قَطِيعَةٌ A portion of land held in fee. See Mgh, Msb. ― -b4- قُطِيعَةٌ i. q. هِجْرَانٌ. (S, K.) And قَطِيعَةُ الرَّحِمِ [ The cutting, or forsaking, or abandoning, of kindred, or relations; contr. of صِلَةُ الرَّحِمِ]. (K, voce حَالِقَةٌ.)

رَجُلٌ قَطَّاعٌ لِلْأُمُورِ ذ (S, M, A, K, all in art. قضب); see قَضَّابَةٌ.

أَقْطَعُ اللِّسَانِ ذ (assumed tropical:) Unable to reply. (AZ in TA, art. بكم.)

تَقْطِيعٌ ذ Conformation, or proportion, of a man or beast; lineament of the face: i. q. قَدٌّ, of a man: (K:) and the stature; or justness, or beauty, of the stature; of a man; syn. قَامَةٌ: (K:) and the cut, shape, fashion, or form, of anything: see an ex. voce زَبَنٌ; and also voce قَدٌّ, where it is shown that, being an attribute of a thing as well as of a person, it does not always mean stature or the like: it signifies cut, shape, fashion, or form: and more commonly conformation or proportion: and hence, beauty, or justness, of stature; and simply stature, or tallness: pl. تَقَاطِيعُ, which is more commonly used than the sing. in the present day.

مَقْطَعٌ ذ A place of crossing, or traversing, of a river [and a desert, &c.]: (K, TA:) pl. in this sense مَقَاطِعُ. (S.) ― -b2- Also the place of utterance of a letter; like مَخْرَجٌ. ― -b3- مَقْطَعُ الحَقِّ: see جَلَاآءٌ. ― -b4- قَهْوَةٌ لَذِيذَةُ المقطع: see مَزَّةٌ.

مَقْطَعَةٌ ذ A cause, or means, of cutting off, or stopping: see مَحْسَمَةٌ.

تِيَابٌ مُقَطَّعَةٌ ذ [ Garments cut out of several pieces ] are such as the shirt, and trousers, or drawers, &c. (Mgh in art. ثوب.) ― -b2- دَرَاهِمُ مُقَطَّعَةٌ Dirhems [or coins ] that are [ clipped, or] light of weight, [or] in which is adulterating alloy: or, as some say, much broken. (Mgh.) ― -b3- الحُرُوفُ المُقَطَّعَةُ The letters of the alphabet: so applied in an explanation of حُرُوفُ المُعْجَمِ, as syn. with this, in the S in art. عجم. See also حَرْفٌ. ― -b4- See قِطْعَةٌ.

اـِسْتِثْنَاآءٌ مُنْقَطِعٌ ذ An exception in which the thing excepted is disunited in kind from that from which the exception is made; contr. of مُتَّصِلٌ. ― -b2- مُنْقَطِعٌ: see مُرْسَلٌ.

مَقَاطِيعُ ذ Heads of spears, or arrows; syn. نِصاَلٌ. (L, art. صلد.) See also قِطْعٌ.

قِطْفٌ ذ A bunch of grapes, &c.: pl. قُطُوفٌ: see an ex. voce ذَلَّلَ. ― -b2- قِطْفٌ i. q. مَقْطُوفٌ. (TA in art. بسط.) See بَسِيطٌ.

قَطَفٌ ذ : see بَقْلٌ.

قَطَافٌ ذ and ↓ قِطَافٌ The time of gathering the crop of grapes: (S, Mgh, K:) or the latter has this meaning; and the former is allowable accord. to Ks: (T, TA:) and the latter is also an inf. n., (Mgh,) or may be so, (Ks, T, TA,) meaning the gathering of the crop of grapes: (Mgh:) [or both have this meaning; for] you say, هٰذَا زَمَانُ القَطَافِ and القِطَافِ. (Msb.) See جَدَادٌ.

قَطِيفٌ ذ a coll. gen. n. syn. with قَطَائِفُ, mentioned in the TA voce أُبْلُوجٌ, which see. ― -b2- قَطِيفَةٌ A villous, or nappy, دِثَار [or outer wrapping garment ]. (S, Msb, K.) See also راَحُولَاتٌ.

قَطَائِفُ ذ : see my 1001 Nights, note 23 to chap. viii. See also زَلاَبِيَه. In the TA, art. كنف, it is applied to كُنَافَة.

مِقْطَفٌ ذ ( vulg. مَقْطَفٌ) [pl. مَقَاطِف] A handbasket, made of palm-leaves: so called because originally used in gathering fruit. (See also قُفَّة and زَنْبِيل.)

1 قَطَنَ بِالمَكَانِ ذ He resided in the place. (Msb.)

قَطْنُ ذ syn. with قَطْ: see the latter.

قُطْنُ البَرْدِىِّ ذ : see بَرْدِىٌّ.

قَطَنٌ ذ The part between the two hips, or haunches; (S, K;) or the downward [or lower ] and even part of the back of a man; (Msb;) the lower portion of the loins.

قَطِنَةٌ ذ i. q. حَفِثٌ, as its description plainly shows; i. e., the third stomach, commonly called the manyplies, and by some the millet, of a ruminant animal. See رُمَّانَةٌ.

قِطْنِيَّةٌ ذ and قُطْنِيَّةٌ [ Any kind of pulse, or seed of a leguminous plant that is cooked; this is the general meaning, and includes almost all the particular definitions of the word]: pl. قَطَانِىُّ, (S, Mgh, Msb, K,) in the CK erroneously written with the article القَطَانِىُ.

قَاطِنٌ ذ A resident. (Msb.)

قَيْطُونٌ ذ A closet; syn. مَخْدَعٌ; i. e., a [ small ] chamber within a [ large ] chamber. (L in art. سن.)

يَقْطِينٌ ذ A plant (S, K) and the like (K) that has no سَاق [or standing stem ]; (S, K;) as the gourd-plant and the like: (S:) any tree [or plant ] that spreads [or creeps ] upon the ground, not rising upon a stem; such, for instance, as the colocynth; but conventionally applied especially to the gourd. (Msb.) See سُطَّاحٌ.

قَطًا ذ Sand-grouse; pterocles melanogaster: so Wilkinson, Ancient Egyptians i. 250: see De Sacy's Chrest. Ar., 2nd ed., pp. 369, et seqq.

قَطْوَةٌ ذ : see دَالِيَةٌ.

قَطَاةٌ ذ , of a beast, The croup, or rump, and what is between the hips, or haunches: (K:) or [the fore part of the croup; i. e.] the place where the رِدْف sits. (S, K.) See الغُرَابَانِ. ― -b2- أَدَلُّ مِنْ قَطَاةٍ: see تُبَّعٌ.

4 أَقَعَّ المَاآءَ ذ : see أَعَقَّ.

R. Q. 1 قَعْقَعَ ذ : see an ex. voce شَنٌّ.

R. Q. 2 تَقَعْقَعَ ذ It made a sound, or noise; a “ crepitus; ” a succession of sharp, or harsh, sounds, or noises; a creaking, creaking, rustling, clattering, clashing, rattling, &c.: see an ex. voce صَلَّ.

قعْقَعَةُ السِّلَاحِ ذ The clash of arms. ― -b2- See عَقْعَقَ. ― -b3- قَعْقَعَةٌ A gnashing of the teeth.

مَاآءٌ قُعٌّ ذ or قَعٌّ: see عُقٌّ.

مَاآءٌ قُعَاعٌ ذ : see حُرَاقٌ and عُقٌّ.

خِمْسٌ قَعْقَاعٌ ذ : see خِمْسٌ and خَثِيثٌ.

8 اِقْتَعَطَ ذ : see اِعْتَجَرَ. ― -b2- الاِقْطِعَاطُ and العِمَّةُ الطَّابِقِيَّةُ signify the same. (O, K, in art. طبق.)

7 انقعف ذ : see انقعث; He died. (TA, art. قعص.)

4 أَقْعَى ذ It (a star) rose high, and then quitted not its place. (TA, art. عرد.)

الاـِقْعَاءُ ذ : see عَقِبَ.

1 قَفَّثِ الأَرْضُ ذ The land had its herbs, or leguminous plants, dried up for want of water. (A, TA, in art. حف.) [See also قَفِئَت, said of land.] ― -b2- قَفَّ: see R. Q. 2 in art. جف.

8 اِقْتِفَافٌ ذ The eating until nothing remains. (Ham, p. 239.)

قَفٌّ ذ : see غَفٌّ.

قُفٌّ ذ High ground, (Msb, K,) less than what is termed جَبَل: (Msb:) or a high portion of the مَتْن of the earth: (S:) or high and rugged ground, not amounting to what is termed جَبَل. (Sh, TA.)

قُفَّةٌ ذ (pl. قُفَفٌ) A basket of the same kind as that called مِقْطَف, but larger; smaller than the زَنبِيل: i. q. مَرْجُونَةٌ. (TA in art. ضون.)

قَفِيفٌ ذ : see قَبِيبٌ: and جَفِيفٌ.

القَفْرُ اليَهُودِىُّ ذ Jews-pitch, i. e. asphaltum; also called mumia, and in Arabic مُومِيَا: see De Sacy's Abd-allatif, p. 273: and see تِرْيَاقٌ and حُمَرٌ.

قَفُورٌ ذ i. q. كَافُورٌ. (IDrd in TA, art. كفر.)

قَفْشٌ ذ A boot: (M:) or a short boot: (IAar, K, TA:) or such as is cut, and not well made. (Az, TA.)

4 أَقْفَلَ البَابَ ذ He locked the door. (TK.) See also أَغْلَقَ.

قَفْلٌ ذ : see فَرَاشٌ.

قَافِلٌ ذ A slender horse. (TA, art. خشب.)
