شَبَابٌ ذ and ↓ شَبِيبَةٌ [both mentioned above as inf. ns.] (S, Msb, K) [and ↓ شَبَابِيَّةٌ which is a simple subst.] Youth, youthfulness, the prime of man- hood, or young manhood; syn. فَتَاآءٌ; (K;) or حَدَاثَةٌ; contr. of شَيْبٌ: (S:) or the state from puberty to the completion of thirty years; or from sixteen years to thirty-two; after which a man is called كَهْلٌ; (TA;) the age before الكُهُولَة: (Msb:) or the state between thirty and forty: (Mgh:) or, accord. to Mohammad Ibn-Habeeb, the state from the seventeenth year to the completion of fifty-one years is termed ↓ شَبَابِيَّةٌ; the period before, from birth, being termed غُلُومِيَّةٌ; and in the period after, a man being called شَيْخٌ, until he dies. (TA.) One says, سَقَى ا@للّٰهُ عَصْرَ ↓ الشَبِيبَةِ [ May God freshen as with rain the times, or mornings, or afternoons, of youth, &c.], and عُصُورَ الشَّبَائِبِ [ the times, &c., of the states of youth, &c.]. (A, TA.) ― -b2- [شَبَابٌ often signifies (assumed tropical:) The sap, or vigour, of youth or young manhood. ] One says, اِسْتَحَارَ شَبَابُهَا, as in a verse of Aboo-Dhu-eyb, (assumed tropical:) The sap [or vigour ] of youth (مَاآءٌ الشَّبَابِ) flowed in her. (IB, TA in art. حير.) And اِمْتَلَأَ شَبَابًا (assumed tropical:) [ He became full of the sap, or vigour, of youth or young manhood ]. (The lexicons, &c., passim.) [But] مَاآءٌ الشَّبَابِ signifies [also] (tropical:) The freshness, or brightness, and beauty, of youth. (Har p. 340.) [And ↓ شَبِيبَةٌ app. signifies also (assumed tropical:) Youthful folly, or the like; (see an ex. voce غَمْرَةٌ;) and so, probably, does شَبَابٌ.] ― -b3- [Hence,] شَبَابٌ also signifies (assumed tropical:) The first, or beginning, or the new, or recent, state, of a thing; (K, TA;) and so ↓ شَبِيبَةٌ. (TA.) One says, قَدِمَ فِى شَبَابِ الشَّهْرِ (A, TA) (tropical:) He came, or arrived, in the beginning of the month. (TA.) And لَقِيتُهُ فِى شَبَابِ النَّهَارِ (A, TA) (tropical:) I met him in the beginning of the day: (TA:) and جِئْتُكَ فِى شَبَابِ النَّهَارِ and بِشَبَابِ النَّهَارِ (assumed tropical:) I came to thee in the beginning of the day: (Lh, TA:) or شَبَابُ النَّهَارِ means the period when the sun has risen high, when one fifth of the day has passed. (A in art. رأد.) And one says also ↓ فَعَلَ ذٰلِكَ فِى شَبِيبَتِهِ He did that at the commencement thereof. (TA.) -A2- See also شَابٌّ -A3- And see 2.

شِبَابٌ ذ an inf. n. of شَبَّ said of a horse. (S, Msb, K.) -A2- See also the next paragraph, in two places.

شِبَابٌ ذ : see شَبَّ, in three places. ― -b2- Also A horse whose hind feet pass beyond his fore feet; (K;) which is a fault: accord. to Th, such is termed ↓ شَبِيبٌ: IM says that the correct word is شَئِيتٌ: [but] see this in its proper place. (TA.) -A2- Also A thing with which a fire is kindled, or made to burn, burn up, burn brightly or fiercely, blaze, or flame; (S, K;) and so ↓ شِبَابٌ. (K.) ― -b2- And [hence, as also ↓ شِبَابٌ,] (tropical:) A thing that serves [ as a foil ] for beautifying, or setting off, (K,) [or making to appear bright and beautiful, ] or for increasing, or enhancing, and strengthening, [or heightening, in beauty, ] (S, TA,) to another thing. (S, K, TA.) So in the saying, هٰذَا شَبُوبٌ لِكَذَا (tropical:) This is a thing that serves for increasing, or enhancing, [or heightening, in beauty, ] to such a thing. (S, TA.) One says of a woman's headcovering, هُوَ شَبُوبٌ لِوَجْهِهَا (tropical:) [ It is a thing that serves for giving an appearance of additional brightness and beauty to her face ]. (A.)

عَسَلٌ شَبَابِىٌّ ذ Honey of Shebábeh (شَبَابَة); (A, TA;) or, of Benoo-Shebábeh, (Mgh,) a people of Et-Táïf, (A, Mgh, TA,) of [the tribe of] Khath'am, who possessed bees, and hence it was thus called. (Mgh.)

شَبَّذَا زَيْدٌ ذ i. q. حَبَّذَا [q. v. in art. حب]. (Th, TA.)

شَابٌّ ذ part. n. of شَبَّ said of a boy; (Msb;) [ Youthful, or in the prime of manhood; a youth, or a young man; ] in the state from puberty to the completion of thirty years; or from sixteen years to thirty-two; after which a man is called كَهْلٌ; (TA;) in the age before الكُهُولَة: (Msb:) or in the state between thirty and forty: (Mgh:) [or in the state from the seventeenth year to the completion of fifty-one years: (see شَبَابٌ:)] and IAar mentions ↓ شَبٌّ as an epithet applied to a man [in the same sense as شَابٌّ]: (TA:) a female is termed شَابَّةٌ (S, Msb, K) and ↓ شَبَّةٌ; both signifying the same: (S, K:) the pl. of شَابٌّ is شُبَّانٌ (S, A, Mgh, Msb, K) and شَبَبَةٌ (S, A, K) and ↓ شَبَابٌ, (S, A, * K,) or the last is an inf. n. used as an epithet applied to a pl. number, (Mgh, and Ham p. 50,) or it is a quasi-pl. n.: (TA:) females, (Msb,) or women, (K,) are termed شَوَابٌّ (Msb, K) and شَبَائِبُ, (K,) the latter said by AZ to be allowable in the sense of the former, (TA,) which is pl. of شَابَّةٌ, (Msb,) شَبَائِبُ, accord. to Az, being pl. (not of شَابَّةٌ but) of شَبَّةٌ, like as ضَرَائِرُ is of ضَرَّةٌ: (TA:) the dim. of شَابَّةٌ is ↓ شُوَيْبَّةٌ, and some of the Arabs say ↓ شُوَابَّةٌ, changing the ى into ا before a double letter [as in دُوَابَّةٌ for دُوَيْبَّةٌ]. (ISd, L in art. هد.) One says, مَرَرْتُ بِرِجَال ٍ شَبَبَةٍ meaning شُبَّانٍ [i. e. I passed by men that were youths, or persons in the prime of manhood ]. (S.) ― -b2- See also شَبَبٌ.

شَوْشَبٌ ذ The scorpion. (IAar, K.) ― -b2- And The louse; syn. قَمْلٌ: (K in this art.:) or the ant; syn. نَمْلٌ: (K in art. ششب:) fem. [or perhaps n. un.] with ة. (TA.)

مُشِبٌّ ذ , and its fem., with ة: see شَبَبٌ, in three places. ― -b2- Also the former, A lion: (K:) or a full-grown lion: syn. أَسَدٌ كَبِيرٌ. (TA.)

مِشَبٌّ ذ : see شَبَبٌ.

مُشَبَّبٌ الأَظَافِرِ ذ [or rather الأَظَافِيرِ, pl. of the pl. أَظْفَارٌ or of أُظْفُورٌ,] (tropical:) Having sharp-pointed nails or talons or claws; as though they flamed, by reason of their sharpness. (A, TA.)

مَشْبُوبٌ ذ [pass. part. n. of 1]. You say نَارٌ مَشْبُوبَةٌ A fire kindled, or made to burn, burn up, burn brightly or fiercely, blaze, or flame: شَابَّةٌ in this sense is not allowable. (K.) ― -b2- [Hence,] applied to a man, (A, TA,) (tropical:) Comely, (S, TA,) of goodly countenance; (A, TA;) as though lighted up: bright, or fair, in complexion, and of goodly countenance; as though his countenance were lighted up with fire: pl. مَشَابِيبُ. (TA.) And (tropical:) A man of acute mind. (TA.) And طَلَعَتِ المَشْبُوبَتَانِ الزُّهَرَتَانِ [or الزَّهْرَاوَانِ?] (tropical:) Venus and Jupiter, so called on account of their beauty and splendour, rose. (A, TA.)

شِبِتٌّ ذ [ Anethum graveolens, or dill, of the common garden-species; ] a certain herb, or leguminous plant, well known: (K:) it is said that سِبِتٌّ is an arabicized word from شِبِتٌّ; but it has been stated before [in art. سبت, q. v.,] that both these are arabicized words from شِوِذْ [or شِوِدْ]; and that سبط [i. e. سِطٌّ] is a dial. var. (TA.) [See also شِبِثٌّ.]

5 تشّبث بِهِ ذ He, or it, clung, caught, clave, or adhered, to it, (S, A, L, Msb, K, * TA,) namely, a thing; (S, L, TA;) as also ↓ شَبِثَ بِهِ, aor. شَبَثَ , inf. n. شَبَثٌ: (L, TA:) or, accord. to Esh-Shiháb, in the Expos. of the Shifè, to a thing in which was weakness: or, accord. to the 'Ináyeh, he, or it, clung, &c., to it with weakness; and therefore ↓ مُتَشَبِّثٌ is used as an epithet applied to a spider; and تَمَسُّكَ signifies a stronger action; and تشبّث به is also expl. as meaning he, or it, took fast, or firm, hold upon it: (L, TA:) and he stuck, or fixed, or struck, the claw, or talons, or nails, into it: (MA, PS:) and الشَّىْءَ ↓ شَبِثَ he laid hold upon the thing, and took it: IAar was asked respecting some verses, and he said, مَا أَدْرِى مِنْ أَيْنَ شَبِثْتُهَا I know not whence I laid hold upon them [ and took them ]. (L, TA.)

شَبَثٌ ذ The spider: (K:) or a large spider, with many legs. (TA.) ― -b2- Also (K) A certain small creeping thing, (S, A, Msb, K,) having many legs, (S, A, K,) of the أَحْنَاش [or creeping things &c.] of the earth: (S, Msb:) it should not be called شِبْثٌ: (S:) or a certain small creeping thing, having six long legs, yellow in the back, and in the outer sides of the legs, black in the head, and blue in the eye: or a certain small creeping thing, having many legs, large in the head, of the احناش of the earth: or a certain small creeping thing, wide in the mouth, high in the hinder part, that perforates the ground, is found where there is moisture, and eats scorpions; and it is what is called شَحْمَةُ الأَرْضِ: (TA:) pl. شِبْثَانٌ. (S, A, Msb, K.) The [marks termed] أَثْر of the blade of a sword are likened by a poet, (S, TA,) namely, Sá'ideh Ibn-Ju-eiyeh, (TA,) to the tracks of شِبْثَان. (S, TA.)

رَجُلٌ شَبِثٌ ذ A man whose nature it is to cling, catch, cleave, or adhere, to a thing. (S, K.) And ضِرْسٌ ضَبِثٌ شَبِثٌ [ A tooth, or molar tooth, ] that catches, or fastens, to a thing. (TA.)

شُبَثَةٌ ذ , (K,) or شُبَثَةٌ ضُبَثَةٌ, (TA,) A man (TA) who cleaves to his قِرْن [i. e. opponent, or adversary ], not quitting him. (K, TA.)

شِبِثٌّ ذ [erroneously written in some copies of the K شِبْثٌ, and in the L شِبِثٌ,] A certain wellknown plant; (AHn, L, Msb;) a certain herb, or leguminous plant; (K;) [ i. q. شِبِتٌّ and سِبِتٌّ, q. v.; i. e. anethum graveolens, or dill, of the common garden-species: ] Sgh says that شبث is a foreign word of which سِبِتٌّ is an arabicized form; and it is made of the measure فِعِلٌّ because this measure has many examples; whereas the measure فِعِلٌّ, of which اـِبِلٌ is an instance, is extraordinary. (Msb.)

شَبُّوثٌ ذ and ↓ شَبَّاثٌ [so in the CK and in my MS. copy of the K, but the latter is strangely said in the TA to be with kesr,] sings. of شَبَابِيثُ, which signifies The flesh-hooks (كَلَالِيب) of the fire. (K.)

1 شَبُحَ ذ , (S, K,) inf. n. شَبَاحَةٌ, (TK,) said of a man, (S,) He was, or became, broad in the fore arms: (S, K, TA:) or long therein. (TA.) -A2- شَبَحَهُ, (A, O, Mgh, L, Msb, K,) aor. شَبَحَ , (K,) inf. n. شَبْحٌ, (TK,) He extended, stretched, or stretched out, it, or him; (A, O, Mgh, L, Msb, K;) namely, a thing; (IF, L, Msb;) a hide, or skin, (A, L, K,) or some other thing, (L,) between pegs, or stakes; (K;) and a man, (Mgh, L, Msb,) between two things, to be flogged, (L,) [i. e.,] between two stakes inserted and fixed in the ground, (Mgh, Msb,) which are called عُقَابَانِ, (Mgh,) when he was beaten, or crucified, (Mgh, Msb,) or like him who is crucified; and ↓ شبّحهُ is used, accord. to some, in the same manner. (L.) شَبَحٌ ذ (S, A, O, Msb, K) and ↓ شَبْحٌ (S, O, K) i. q. شَخْصٌ [i. e. The body, or bodily or corporeal form or figure or substance, of a man or some other thing or object, which one sees from a distance ]: (S, A, O, Msb, K:) a man, or some other creature, of which the شَخْص [or body, &c.,] appears to one: (L:) and a thing that is perceived by sense (A, O, L) and by sight: (O, L:) pl. أَشْبَاحٌ, (A, O, Msb, K,) which is of the former, (A, Msb,) and [of the latter] شُبُوحٌ. (K.) One says, لَاحَ لِى شَبَحٌ, meaning شَخْصٌ [i. e. A body, or bodily form, appeared, loomed, or gleamed, to me ]. (A.) And هُمْ أَشْبَاحٌ بِلَا أَرْوَاحٍ [ They are bodies without souls ]. (A.) And أَذَقُّ مِنْ شَبَحٍ بَاطِلٍ, (A, O,) and مِنْ خَيْطِ بَاطِلٍ, a prov., (O,) meaning [ More minute, or inconsiderable, than ] the atoms that are seen in the rays of the sun entering from a mural aperture in a chamber: (A, * O:) or, as some say, than the thread that comes forth from the mouth of the spider; [meaning gossamer; ] called by the children مُخَاطٌ الشَّيْطَانِ. (O.) And الأَسْمَاآءُ ضَرْبَانِ أَسْمَاآءُ أَشْبَاحٍ وَأَسْمَاآءُ أَعْمَالٍ, meaning [ Nouns are of two sorts, ] the names of things perceived by sense, and the names [ of actions, or rather of accidents or attributes, i. e.] of other things; like as they say أَسْمَاآءُ الأَعْيَانِ and أَسْمَاآءُ المَعَانِى. (A.) And هَلَكَ أَشْبَاحُ مَالِهِ The known ones of his camels, and sheep or goats, and other cattle, perished. (O, K. *) -A2- شَبَحٌ also signifies A door or gate, of high structure; (O, K;) and so ↓ شَبْحٌ: (K:) [but the latter may have originated from a mistranscription; for Sgh says,] and so شَبَجٌ. (O.) -A3- See also شَبَحَةٌ.

شَبْحَةٌ ذ A rafter, or timber, (عُود,) of the ceiling, or roof, of a house: so in a trad. where it is said, فَنَزَعَ سَقْفَ بَيتِى شَبْحَةً شَبْحَةً [ And he pulled off the roof of my house, rafter by rafter, or timber by timber ]. (JM, * TA.)

شِبْحَةٌ ذ of horses: what is thus called is well known [as being A rope which is extended from a horse's fore leg to his hind leg: so in the present day]. (TA.)

شَبَحَةٌ ذ a word occurring in the K and TA voce مُشْطٌ and in the TA voce مِحَرٌّ &c. [app. as meaning A broad piece of wood ]. ― -b2- الشَّبَحَتَانِ signifies The two pieces of wood of the مِنْقَلَة, (O, K,) which is the thing upon which bricks are carried from place to place: the pl. is الشَّبَحَاتُ and [the coll. gen. n., of which شَبَحَةٌ is the n. un., is] ↓ الشَّبَحُ. (O.)

شَبْحَان ذ [whether with or without tenween is not apparent, as the fem. is not mentioned,] Tall; (AA, S, O, K;) an epithet applied to a man. (TA.)

شَبِيحَةٌ ذ sing. of شَبَائِحُ, (O,) which signifies Pieces of wood, (O, K,) broad, (O,) placed transversly, (O, K,) contrariwise, or on contrary sides, (O,) in the [ camel's saddle called ] قَتَب (O, K) that is of wood: so expl. by Shujáa. (O.)

مُشَّبَحٌ ذ , applied to a [garment of the kind called] كِسَاآء, Strong, or stout: (O, K: *) or, as some say, wide. (O.) ― -b2- And [applied to a stick, or piece of wood,] Pared, (K, TA,) and cut, or hewed [app. so as to be made wide: see 1]. (TA.) -A2- And A species of fish.. (TA.)

مَشْبُوحٌ ذ Wide between the shoulders. (L.) ― -b2- مَشْبُوحُ الذِّرَاعَيْنِ and الذِّرَاعَيْنِ ↓ شَبْحُ A man broad in the fore arms: (S, K:) or long therein: but AAF and Ibn-El-Jowzee prefer the former explanation. (TA.) -A2- مَشْبُوحٌ بِأَمْرٍ Attached, or addicted, to an affair; or fond of it. (O.)

1 شَبَرَ ذ , aor. شَبُرَ (S, A, Msb) and شَبِرَ , (S,) inf. n. شَبْرٌ; (IAar, S, Msb, K;) and ↓ شبّر, inf. n. تَشْبِيرٌ; (IAar, K;) He measured by the شِبْر [or span ] (IAar, S, A, Msb, K) a garment, or piece of cloth, (S, K,) or a thing: (A, Msb:) from الشِّبْرُ; like as one says بُعْتُهُ from البَاعُ. (S.) مَنْ لَكَ أَنْ تَشْبُرَ البَسِيطَةَ (tropical:) [ Who will be guarantee for thee that thou wilt measure the earth with thy span? ] is a prov. applied to him who imposes upon himself that which he is unable to accomplish. (A, TA.) ― -b2- شَبَرَ المَرْأَةَ, inf. n. as above, (assumed tropical:) He compressed the woman. (TA.) ― -b3- شَبَرَهُ, (ISk, S, A,) aor. شَبُرَ and شَبِرَ , (TA,) inf. n. as above; (S, K;) and ↓ اشبرهُ, (S, A,) inf. n. اـِشْبَارٌ; (K;) and ↓ شبّرهُ, inf. n. تَشْبِيرٌ; (TS, TA;) He gave him (ISk, S, A, TS, K *) wealth, or property, (ISk, S, A,) or a sword, (ISk, S,) or a coat of mail. (S, IB.) -A2- شَبِرَ, aor. شَبَرَ , He exulted; or exulted greatly, or excessively; and behaved insolently and unthankfully, or ungratefully. (TS, K, TA.)

2 شَبَّرَ see 1, in two places. ― -b2- Also شبّرهُ, (AHeyth, K,) inf. n. تَشْبِيرٌ, (AHeyth, TA,) He magnified him, or honoured him; namely, a man: (AHeyth, K, TA:) and made him a near companion, a familiar, or a favourite. (AHeyth, TA.)

4 اشبر ذ He (a man) begat children tall in the أَشْبَار, i. e. statures: and he begat children short therein. (IAar, TA.) -A2- اشبرهُ: see 1.

5 تشبّر ذ He was, or became, magnified, or honoured: and made a near companion, a familiar, or a favourite. (AHeyth, TA.)

6 تشابرا ذ They (two bodies of men, S) drew near, each to the other: (S, K:) as though they became a span (شِبْر) distant, one from the other; or as though each extended the span to the other. (S.)

شَبْرٌ ذ The measure [ of the width (see ذِرَاعٌ)], by the span, of a garment, or piece of cloth: so in the saying, كَمْ شَبْرُ ثَوْبِكَ [ How much is the measure of the width, by the span, of thy garment, or piece of cloth? ]. (Msb.) ― -b2- Stature; (Fr, K;) and so ↓ شِبْرَةٌ; whether short or tall: (TA:) pl. [app. of the latter] أَشْبَارٌ. (IAar, TA.) You say, مَا أَطْوَلَ شَبْرَهُ How tall is his stature! (TA.) ― -b3- Life, or age; as also ↓ شِبْرٌ. (TS, K.) Thus in the saying, قَصَّرَ ا@للّٰهُ شَبْرَهُ and ↓ شِبْرَهُ [ May God shorten, or God shortened, his life ]. (TS, TA.) ― -b4- (tropical:) The act of giving: (A, IAth:) like as بَاعٌ and يَدٌ are said for “generosity.” (A.) ― -b5- See also شَبَرٌ, in two places. ― -b6- (assumed tropical:) The due for marriage, and for concubitus; (Sh, S, * K; *) such as what are termed مَهْرٌ and عُقْرٌ. (Sh, TA.) You say, أَعْطَيْتُ الَرْأَةَ شَبْرَهَا I gave the woman her due for marriage, or for concubitus. (S.) ― -b7- (assumed tropical:) The hire that is given for the stallion-camel's covering of the female. (IAar, T, S, Msb, K. *) The taking of this is forbidden. (T, S, Msb.) ― -b8- (tropical:) Marriage: (IAth, K:) because it is accompanied by a gift. (IAth, TA.) بَارَكَ ا@للّٰهُ فِى شَبْرِكُمَا May God bless your marriage is a saying mentioned in a trad. (IAth, TA.)

شِبْرٌ ذ A span; the space between the extremity of the thumb and that of the little finger (Msb, K) when extended apart in the usual manner: (Msb:) of the masc. gender: (K:) pl. أَشْبَارٌ, (S, Msb, K,) the only pl. form. (TA.) ― -b2- [As a measure in astronomy, it is said in several of the law-books to be The twelfth part of the رُمْح; and therefore twentytwo minutes and a half, accord. to modern usage: but there is reason to believe that ancient usage differed from the modern with respect to both of these measures, and was not precise nor uniform. See رُمْحٌ.] ― -b3- قِبَالُ الشِّبْرِ (assumed tropical:) The serpent: (IAar, K:) and so قِبَالُ الشِّسْعِ. (IAar, TA.) ― -b4- See also شَبْرٌ, in two places.

شَبَرٌ ذ (tropical:) A gift; (S Mgh, K, TA;) as also ↓ شَبْرٌ (Mgh, TA) and ↓ شِبْرَةٌ: (IAar, TA:) and wealth, or the like; syn. خَيْرٌ: (K:) the first is a word similar to خَبَطٌ and نَفَضٌ; and he who says that it is used by poetic license for شَبْرٌ [as it is said to be in the S] is in error: ↓ شَبْرٌ and شَبَرٌ are said to be two dial. vars., like قَدْرٌ and قَدَرٌ. (TA.) ― -b2- Also A certain thing which the Christians give, one to another, (يَتَعَاطَاهُ النَّصَارَى, K, TA, َبعْضُهُمْ لِبَعْضٍ, TA,) like the قُرْبَان [or Eucharist ], (K, TA,) seeking to ingratiate themselves thereby: (TA:) or the Eucharist (قُرْبَان) itself: (K:) or a thing which the Christians give (تُعْطِيهِ), one to another, as though seeking to ingratiate themselves thereby: (Kh, Sgh, TA:) or (TA, in the K “and”) bodies: and powers, or faculties: (K, TA:) or (TA, in the K “and”) the Gospel. (K, TA.)

شَبُّورٌ ذ A trumpet; syn. بُوقٌ; (S, K;) a certain thing in which one blows: (Mgh:) said to be an arabicized word; (S;) not genuine Arabic: (Mgh, TA:) accord. to IAth, it is Hebrew: (TA:) [app. from the Hebr. שׁוֹפָּר , as observed by Golius.] ― -b2- See also أُشْبُورٌ.
