تَلِفَ المَذَاقُ، إِذَا قَلَصَتْ عَنْ سَاقٍ، مَنْ صَبَرَ فِيهَا عُرِفَ، وَمَنْ ضَعُفَ عَنْهَا. وَالضُّحَى وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا سَجَى مَا وَدَعَكَ رَبُّكَ وَمَا قَلَى. وَلَلْآخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ لَكَ مِنَ الْأُولَى. إِنَّ الْعُلَا حَدَّثَنِي وَهْيَ صَادِقَةٌ فِيمَا تُحَدِّثُ أَنَّ الْعِزَّ فِي النُّقَلِ. إِذَا نَامَ غِرٌّ فِي دُجَى اللَّيْلِ فَاسْهَرْ وَقُمْ لِلْمَعَالِي وَالْعَوَالِي وَشَمِّرِ. إِذَا أَنْتَ لَمْ تُقْصِرْ عَنِ الْجَهْلِ وَالْخَنَا أَصَبْتَ حَلِيمًا أَوْ أَصَابَكَ جَاهِلٌ. الصَّبْرُ عَلَى حُقُوقِ الْمُرُوءَةِ أَشَدُّ مِنَ الصَّبْرِ عَلَى أَلَمِ الْحَاجَةِ، وَذِلَّةُ الْفَقْرِ مَانِعَةٌ مِنْ عِزِّ الصَّبْرِ، كَمَا أَنَّ عِزَّ الْغِنَى مَانِعٌ مِنْ كَرَمِ الْإِنْصَافِ. أَسْئِلَةٌ: مَا هُوَ الْإِعْرَابُ؟ مَا هُوَ الْبِنَاءُ؟ مَا هُوَ الْمُعْرَبُ؟ مَا هُوَ الْمَبْنِيُّ؟ مَا مَعْنَى تَغَيُّرُ أَوَاخِرِ الْكَلِمِ؟ إِلَى كَمْ قِسْمٍ يَنْقَسِمُ التَّغَيُّرُ؟ مَا هُوَ التَّغَيُّرُ اللَّفْظِيُّ؟ مَا هُوَ التَّغَيُّرُ التَّقْدِيرِيُّ؟ مَا أَسْبَابُ التَّغَيُّرِ التَّقْدِيرِيِّ؟ اذْكُرْ سَبَبَيْنِ مِمَّا يَمْنَعُ النُّطْقَ بِالْحَرَكَةِ. ائْتِ بِثَلَاثَةِ أَمْثِلَةٍ لِكَلَامٍ مُفِيدٍ بِحَيْثُ يَكُونُ فِي كُلِّ مِثَالٍ اسْمٌ مُعْرَبٌ بِحَرَكَةٍ مُقَدَّرَةٍ مَنَعَ مِنْ ظُهُورِهَا التَّعَذُّرُ. ائْتِ بِمِثَالَيْنِ لِكَلَامٍ مُفِيدٍ فِي كُلِّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهُمَا اسْمٌ مُعْرَبٌ بِحَرَكَةٍ مُقَدَّرَةٍ مَنَعَ مِنْ ظُهُورِهَا الثِّقَلُ. ائْتِ بِثَلَاثَةِ أَمْثِلَةٍ لِكَلَامٍ مُفِيدٍ فِي كُلِّ مِثَالٍ مِنْهَا اسْمٌ مَبْنِيٌّ. ائْتِ بِثَلَاثَةِ أَمْثِلَةٍ لِكَلَامٍ مُفِيدٍ يَكُونُ فِي كُلِّ مِثَالٍ مِنْهَا اسْمٌ مُعْرَبٌ بِحَرَكَةٍ مُقَدَّرَةٍ مَنَعَ مِنْ ظُهُورِهَا الْمُنَاسَبَةُ.

Line-by-line translation · المعاني

تَلِفَ المَذَاقُ، إِذَا قَلَصَتْ عَنْ سَاقٍ، مَنْ صَبَرَ فِيهَا عُرِفَ، وَمَنْ ضَعُفَ عَنْهَا.
(from previous page) ⟵ Umar ibn al-Khattab asked Amr ibn Ma'dikarib about war, and he said to him: 'It is bitter to the taste, when it bares its leg; whoever is patient in it is known, and whoever is too weak for it is destroyed.'
وَالضُّحَى وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا سَجَى مَا وَدَعَكَ رَبُّكَ وَمَا قَلَى.
By the morning brightness and [by] the night when it covers with darkness, your Lord has not taken leave of you, [O Muhammad], nor has He detested [you].
وَلَلْآخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ لَكَ مِنَ الْأُولَى.
And the Hereafter is better for you than the first [life].
إِنَّ الْعُلَا حَدَّثَنِي وَهْيَ صَادِقَةٌ فِيمَا تُحَدِّثُ أَنَّ الْعِزَّ فِي النُّقَلِ.
Highness told me, and it is truthful in what it tells, that glory is in moving [traveling].
إِذَا نَامَ غِرٌّ فِي دُجَى اللَّيْلِ فَاسْهَرْ وَقُمْ لِلْمَعَالِي وَالْعَوَالِي وَشَمِّرِ.
If a naive person sleeps in the darkness of the night, then stay awake, stand for high matters and high ranks, and prepare.
إِذَا أَنْتَ لَمْ تُقْصِرْ عَنِ الْجَهْلِ وَالْخَنَا أَصَبْتَ حَلِيمًا أَوْ أَصَابَكَ جَاهِلٌ.
If you do not refrain from ignorance and obscenity, you will strike a forbearing person or an ignorant person will strike you.
الصَّبْرُ عَلَى حُقُوقِ الْمُرُوءَةِ أَشَدُّ مِنَ الصَّبْرِ عَلَى أَلَمِ الْحَاجَةِ، وَذِلَّةُ الْفَقْرِ مَانِعَةٌ مِنْ عِزِّ الصَّبْرِ، كَمَا أَنَّ عِزَّ الْغِنَى مَانِعٌ مِنْ كَرَمِ الْإِنْصَافِ.
Patience regarding the rights of chivalry is more intense than patience regarding the pain of need, and the humiliation of poverty prevents the glory of patience, just as the glory of wealth prevents the generosity of fairness.
