He said: The noun is recognized by: al-khafd (genitive case), al-tanwin (nunation), the entry of alif and lam (the definite article), and the particles of khafd, which are: min (from), ila (to), 'an (about), 'ala (on), fi (in), rubba (many a), al-ba' (with/by), al-kaf (like), and al-lam (for), and the particles of oath, which are: al-waw, al-ba', and al-ta'.
I say: The noun has signs by which it is distinguished from its two siblings, the verb and the particle, through the presence of one of them or the acceptance of it. The author—may Allah have mercy on him!—has mentioned four of these signs, which are: al-khafd, al-tanwin, the entry of alif and lam, and the entry of a particle from the particles of khafd.
As for al-khafd, in the language it is the opposite of elevation, and in the terminology of the grammarians, it is an expression for the kasra (i-vowel) which the governing agent produces, or what stands in its place. This is like the kasra on the letter ra in 'Bakr' and 'Amr' in examples such as your saying: 'I passed by Bakr' and your saying: 'This is the book of Amr.' Thus, Bakr and Amr are nouns due to the presence of the kasra at the end of each of them.
As for al-tanwin, in the language it is vocalization; you say: 'The bird nawwana,' meaning it vocalized. In the terminology of the grammarians, it is a quiescent nun that follows the end of the noun in pronunciation, but departs from it in writing because it is unnecessary.
