1 نَهِمَ ذ He had an inordinate desire or appetite (S, Msb, K) for food. (S, K.)

نهَِيمٌ ذ A chiding of camels. (TA.)

طَرِيقٌ نَهَّامٌ ذ A road wherein is [ heard ] a chiding of camels: (TA:) see حَنَّانٌ.

1 نَهَاهُ عَنْهُ ذ He forbade him it. ― -b2- لَاتُسْهَى وَلَا تُنْهَى: see art. سهى, in two places.

6 تَنَاْهَىَ see 8.

8 اِنْتَهَى عَنْهُ ذ , and ↓ تَنَاهَى, He refrained, abstained, or desisted, from it, as forbidden; left, relinquished, or forsook it. (S, Msb.) See an ex. of the latter voce سَوَادٌ. ― -b2- اِنْتَهَى اـِلَيْهِ It ultimately reached, or extended, and sometimes it so pertained, to him, or it: in the latter sense said of authority and the like: and simply, it reached to him, or it. ― -b3- اِنْتَهَى اـِلَيْهِ الخَبَرُ, and ↓ تَنَاهَى, The information, or news, reached him. (S.) ― -b4- اِنْتَهَى اـِلَى مَوْضِعٍ He came at last, or ultimately, to a place. So I have rendered it in explaining أَفْضَى. ― -b5- اِنْتَهَى It (a thing, or an affair,) attained the utmost possible point, or degree. (Msb.) It (fruit, and the like) attained its utmost state of growth. ― -b6- اِنْتَهَى It is ended: a word put to mark the end of a quotation.

رَكِبَ النَّهْىَ ذ He did that which he was forbidden to do. (TA in art. ردع.)

نَهُوٌّ ذ is anomalous, (TA,) like بَغُوٌّ.

نِهَايَةٌ ذ The utmost possible point, or degree: (Msb:) and the ultimate point, or element, to which a thing can be reduced or resolved: its utmost point or particular: as also ↓ مَنْتَهًى. See فَصٌّ. ― -b2- نِهَايَةٌ فِى السَّخَاآءِ [ Extreme in bounty, or munificence ]. (O and K, voce مَسْحَلٌ.)

نَاهِيكَ بِأَخِينَا ذ [ A person sufficing thee is our brother ]: the ب is added to denote emphatic praise. (Fr in TA, art. بِ.) See also Har, p. 28, and, more particularly, p. 91.

مُنْتَهًى ذ A place to which a person or thing comes at last; a journey's end; a goal; a destination, or place or state to which a person or thing is appointed to come; an end; an ultimate object: see an ex. in a verse near the end of art. ب. See نِهَايَةٌ. ― -b2- سِدْرَةُ المُنْتَهَى (Kur liii. 14) The lote-tree of the ultimate point of access, in the Seventh Heaven: see سدر.

الغُرَابُ النُّوحِىُّ ذ [ The Noachian crow; ] an appel-lation applied in Egypt to the زاغ (or rook ). (TA, art. زيغ.)

النَّوْطَةُ ذ The crop of a bird: see الجِرِّيْئَةُ.

نوّاطة ذ The same as نُوَّاعَةٌ. See رُجَّاحَةٌ.

5 تَنَوَّعَ ذ , said of a branch of a tree: see تَنَوَّسَ. ― -b2- تَنَوَّعَ It became of various sorts, or species. (Msb.)

نُوَّاعَةٌ ذ A child's swing, of rope. See رُجَّاحَةٌ.

مُنِيفٌ ذ High; lofty; applied to a mountain, and a building. (T.) You say also عِزٌّ مُنِيفٌ [ High nobility ]. (K in art. عيط.)

2 نَوَّقَ ذ [ He broke, or trained, a camel]. (TA, voce مُصْعَبٌ.)

5 تَنَّيَقَ فِى مَطْعَمِهِ وَمَلْبَسِهِ ذ , and نَنَوَّقَ, He was nice and luxurious (تَجَوَّدَ وَبَالَغَ) in his diet and his apparel. (JK, K.) Better explained voce تَأَنَّقَ. ― -b2- تَنَوَّقَ: see تَأَنَّقَ and تَجَوَّدَ, and نِيقَةٌ.

نِيقٌ ذ quasi-inf. n. of أَنَاقَ.

نَاقَةٌ ذ : see قَلُوصٌ, and بَعِيرٌ, and بَكْرٌ. ― -b2- نَاقَةُ الحَذَّاآءِ: see رِحَالَةٌ. ― -b3- أَيْنُقَاتٌ pl. of أَيْنُقٌ pl. of نَاقَةٌ: see a verse cited voce مُسْهَمٌ.

نِيقَةٌ ذ a subst. from تَنَوَّقَ The second consonant is unclear in the text. (IJ, S, K) as syn. with تَأَنَّقَ (S) [and therefore signifying Daintiness, nicety, exquisiteness, refinement, or scrupulous nicety and exactness; and the exceeding of what is usual in a thing: or the choosing what is excellent, or best, to be done, and doing admirably: or the doing firmly, solidly, soundly, or thoroughly, and skilfully: or] the exceeding what is usual in a thing, and making it good, or beautiful, and firm, solid, sound, or free from defect or imperfection. (Ham, p. 625) See تَأَنَّقَ.

1 نَالَ ذ , aor. يَنَالُ, has for inf. ns. نَالٌ and مَنَالٌ and مَنَالَةٌ. (TA.) ― -b2- See 6.

3 نَاوَلَهُ شَيْئًا ذ He gave him a thing; presented, or offered, it to him; gave him it with his hand; handed it to him; syn. عَاطَاهُ; (T;) he gave him a thing with his extended hand. (T, K.)

5 تَنَوَّلَ عَليْنَا بِشَىْءٍ يَسِيرٍ ذ : see تَطَوَّلَ.

6 تَنَاوَلَ مَاآءَ الحَوْضِ ذ [ He reached, and drank of, the water of the drinking-trough ]: said of a camel. (S, art. نوش.) ― -b2- تَنَاوَلَ مِنْ يَدِهِ شَيْئًا He took from his hand a thing; took it with his hand from his (another's) hand; syn. تَعَاطَاهُ. (T.) ― -b3- [تَنَاوَلَ شَيْئًا He reached a thing; took it with his hand; handed it to himself; ] he took a thing with the extended hand; (TK;) or simply he took a thing; took it with his hand, took hold of it; syn. أَخَذَهُ: (K:) best rendered, he took, or reached, or reached and took, a thing, absolutely, or with the hand, or with the extended hand; and in like manner, with the mouth, as in an instance voce رَمَّ, &c.; he helped himself to it (i. e. food). ― -b4- تَنَاوَلَهُ بِالسَّيْفِ He reached, or hit him, with the sword: see نَفَحَهُ: and see تَشَاوَلُوا, and أَطَفَّ. ― -b5- هُوَ قَرِيبُ المُتَنَاوَلِ and سَهْلُ المَتَنَاوَلِ [app. He is one from whom it is easy to take, or receive, gifts, &c.]. (TA.) ― -b6- تَنَاوَلُوا الرِّمَاحَ: see 6 in art. ذوق. ― -b7- تَنَاوَلَهُ بِمَا يَسُوؤُهُ [ He carped at him by saying, or taxed or charged him with, that which would grieve him ]. ― -b8- تناوله بما لَيْسَ فِيهِ [ He carped at him by saying, or taxed or charged him with, what was not in him ]. (TA, voce اِغْتَابَهُ.) ― -b9- تَنَاوَلَهُ بِلِسَانِهِ He carped at him with his tongue: (IbrD:) as also ↓ نَالَهُ. (TA, art. هلب.) ― -b10- تناول شَيْئًا It (a noun, &c.) applied to a thing. ― -b11- تَنَاوَلَ It comprehended, or comprised: post-classical in this sense, but commonly used. (MF, TA.) ― -b12- تَنَاوَلَهُ بِمَا يُكُرَهُ He taxed or charged him with, or accused him of a thing disliked, or hated. See also art. نيل; see an explanation of اِغْتَابَهُ, and see ظَهْرٌ.

نَالٌ ذ : see نَوَالٌ.

نَوَالٌ ذ and ↓ نَائِلٌ (S, K) and ↓ نَالٌ (K) A gift: (S, K:) and a benefit, or favour, obtained from a man. (TA.) See two exs. of the first voce خِرْقٌ: and an ex. of the second voce عَرَبَةٌ. ― -b2- نَوَالٌ is also used as an inf. n. See an ex., from El-Aashà, voce لَيْسَ.

نَائِلٌ ذ : see نَوَالٌ.

مِنْوَالٌ ذ The web-beam of a loom; the beam on which the web is rolled, (S, Msb, in art. نول, and S, K, voce حَفَّةٌ,) as it is woven. (Msb.)

1 نَامَتْ رِجْلُهُ ذ (assumed tropical:) I. q. خَدِرَتْ [ His leg, or foot, became benumbed, or torpid ]. (TA in art. بسر.) ― -b2- نَامَ (assumed tropical:) It (a woman's anklet) ceased to sound, by reason of the fulness of the leg: like as one says [in the contr. case], استيقظ. (TA in art. يقظ.) ― -b3- نَامَ has for its inf. ns. نَوْمٌ and مَنَامٌ. (Msb.) ― -b4- نَامَ الثَّوْبُ i. q. رَقَدَ [q. v.] (A, art. رقد.) ― -b5- نَامَتِ السُّوقُ i. q. رَقَدَت [q. v.] (Th, in TA, art. رقد.) ― -b6- نَامَ (tropical:) He lay; as opposed to he sat and he stood. See نَائِمٌ. ― -b7- نَامَ عَنْ حَاجَتِهِ He cared not for the object of his want, neglected it. (Msb.)

2 نَوَّمَ ذ and ↓ أَنَامَ (assumed tropical:) It benumbed, or torpified: see نَامَتْ رِجْلُهُ.

3 نَاوَمْتُهُ فِى شِعَارٍ وَاحِدٍ ذ [ I slept with him in one under-garment ]. (S, art. شعر.)

10 اِسْتَنَامَ اـِليْهِ ذ He trusted to him, and became quiet, or easy, in mind; relied upon him. (S, K.)

اِمْرَأَةٌ نَؤُومُ الضُّحَى ذ i. q. رَقُودُ الضحى [which see]. (A, art. رقد.)

نَائِمٌ ذ (tropical:) Lying; as opposed to sitting and standing. (Mgh.)

أَنْوَمُ ذ [ More, or most, prone to sleep ]. (A, art. فهد.)

مَنَامٌ ذ Time of sleep. (Jel, xxxix. 43.) See also 1.

نَوْنَةٌ ذ The dimple in the chin of a young child: (M, K:) see خُنْعُبَةٌ, and قَلْتَةٌ, and دَائِرَةٌ, and 2 in art. دسم.

1 نَاهَ بِهِ ذ (Msb) and بِهِ ↓ نَوَّهَ (S, Mgh, Msb, K) He rendered famous (S, Mgh, Msb, K *) and magnified; (Msb;) and rendered notorious; (Mgh;) it, (S, Msb,) namely a person's name, (S,) or a thing, (Msb,) or him. (Mgh.)

1 نَوَاهُ ذ and ↓ اِنْتَوَاهُ He intended it, purposed it, designed it, aimed at it, proposed it to himself as the object of his aim.

8 اِنْتَوَى القَوْمُ مَنْزِلًا بِمَوْضِعِ كَذَا ذ (S, Msb) The people, or party, repaired, or betook themselves, to, or towards, a place of alighting or abode, in such a place. (Msb.) See 1. ― -b2- اِنْتَوَى It (a people, or company of men,) removed from country to country, or town to town. (TA.)

نَوًى ذ Date-stones: they are often used as food for camels; (see اـِبِلٌ نَوَوِيَّةٌ;) and for this purpose are bruised, and sometimes mixed with barley, and then moistened: see بَسِيسَةٌ. ― -b2- نَوَاةٌ What is cut off in the circumcision of a girl. (Lh, in TA, voce عُذْرَةٌ.) The name shows that this is the prepuce of the clitoris, the end of which resembles the end of a date-stone. But see بَظْرٌ. ― -b3- النَّوَى What remains of the place of circumcision of a girl after that operation; i. e. the بَظْر: (M:) or the place of circumcision of a girl, which is what remains of her بَظْر when the مُتْك has been cut off. (T.) ― -b4- نَوًى Pieces of gold, each of the weight of five dirhems. (TA in art. جب.) ― -b5- نَوًى The tract, or region towards which one goes (S) in journeying, whether near or distant; (S;) the place that is the object of a journey: (El-Kálee, TA:) [a traveller's destination: ] the course, or direction, that one pursues (K, TA) in journeying and in acting or conduct: (TA:) see an ex. voce صَرْفٌ (third sentence), and عَقَرَ. It is of the fem. gender. (S.) See an ex. in some verses cited voce بَيْنٌ.

نِىٌّ ذ and نَىٌّ: see art. نيأ.

نِيَّةٌ ذ An intention, an intent, a purpose, a design, an aim; a determination of the mind, or heart: (Msb, TA:) this is the general meaning: (Msb:) the direction that one takes (S, Msb, K) in a journey, (S, K,) near or distant, (S,) and in an action: (K:) the thing that one intends, or purposes, or aims at: an affair: (Msb:) the place to which one purposes journeying: (S in art. زل:) see an ex. from a rájiz in art. زل, first paragraph: the thing, or place, that one proposes to himself as the object of his aim, in an action, or a journey: or the thing, or place, that is the object of an action or journey: see طِيَّةٌ and شُلَّةٌ. ― -b2- نِيَّةٌ نَقَحٌ i. q. طَرَحٌ and ضرحٌ, &c. (O, art. ضرح.) ― -b3- نِيَّةٌ بَعِيدَةٌ: see بَعيدٌ, where the ة of the latter word has been accidentally omitted. It also often (or generally) means A distant, or remote, thing, or place, that is the object of an action or journey: &c.

أَنَامُنْتَوٍ عَنْ هَذَا الأَمْرِ ذ I. q. مَتَرَيِّعٌ, q. v. (TA in art. ريع.)

1 نَاكَ المَطَرُ الأَرْضَ ذ , and النُّعَاسُ عَيْنَهُ: see نَكَحَ.

1 نَالَ مِنْهُ ذ He defamed him. (L, art. قبح.) ― -b2- نَالَ مِنْ عِرْضِهِ He defamed him. (T, K, TA.) ― -b3- نَال مِنْهُ He harmed, hurt, or injured him, namely, an enemy. (Mgh.) ― -b4- نَالَهُ بِلِسَانِهِ is coupled in the Msb, art. قرص, with أَذَاهُ; and seems plainly to signify أَصاَبَهُ, which, in this case, is the same as أَذَاهُ. And ↓ تَنَاوَلَهُ has a similar meaning. ― -b5- نَالَ He obtained, or attained. (S, K.) نَالَ مِنْ عَدُوِّهِ He attained [or obtained ] the object of his aim, or desire, from his enemy. (Msb.) ― -b6- نَالَهُ, aor. يَنَالُ, It reached him; came to him; syn. وَصَلَ اـِلَيْهِ. (M, art. نيل.) See also Bd, xxii. 38. ― -b7- نَالَ لَكَ أَنْ نَفْعَلَ, aor. يَنِيلُ; and لَكَ ↓ أَنَالَ: see أَنَى. ― -b8- نَالَهُ, first. pers. نِلْتَهُ, inf. n. نَيْلٌ, He obtained it; he attained it; namely, the object of his wish, &c. (S, K, Msb, &c.)
