عَاضٍ ذ A man possessing sufficient clothing and food. (ISd, K.) -A2- See also 1, last sentence.

1 عَطَّ الثَّوْبَ ذ , (S, O, K,) aor. عَطُ3َ , inf. n. عَطٌّ, (S, O,) He slit, or rent, the garment, or piece of cloth, lengthwise, (Lth, S, O, K,) or breadthwise, without separation, (Lth, O, K,) but not heard by Mtr as meaning breadthwise in chaste language; (Har p. 636;) like ↓ عطّطهُ; (K;) or this, of which the inf. n. is تَعْطِيطٌ (S, O, TA) and تَعْطَاطٌ also, (TA,) is with teshdeed to denote muchness [of the action], or multiplicity [of the objects]: (S, O, * TA:) and الثَّوْبَ ↓ اعتطّ signifies [the same, or simply] he slit, or rent, the garment, or piece of cloth. (TA.) El-Mufaddal is related to have said that he had read in a copy of the Kur-án, [in xii. 28,] فَلَمَّا رَأَى قَمِيصَهُ عُطَّ مِنْ دُبُرٍ [ And when he saw that his shirt was rent in the hinder part ]. 7 انعطّ ذ It (a garment, or piece of cloth,) became slit, or rent, (S, O, K,) lengthwise, or [accord. to some] breadthwise, without separation; as also ↓ تعطّط: (K:) or the latter signifies تَشَقَّقَ [as meaning it became slit, or rent, &c., much, or in several, or many, places; or is like the former verb but said of several, or many, garments, &c.]. (O.) ― -b2- Also, said of a stick, or branch, or the like, It bent without breaking so as to part asunder. (AZ, O, K.)

8 اـِعْتَطَ3َ see 1. ― -b2- [Hence,] one says, اعتطّ أَوَائِلَ القَوْمِ (tropical:) He clave the foremost persons of the people, or party. (TA.)

عُطُطٌ ذ [ Wrappers of the kind called ] مَلَاحِف [pl. of مِلْحَفَةٌ] slit, or rent; or slit, or rent, much, or in many places. (IAar, O, K.)

عَطِيطٌ ذ A garment, or piece of cloth, slit, or rent, [ lengthwise, or, accord. to some, breadthwise, without separation; ] as also ↓ مَعْطُوطٌ. (TA.)

مَعَطٌّ ذ [ A place of slitting or rending &c.]. One says فَتْقٌ وَاسِعُ المَعَطِّ [ A rent of which the place of slitting is wide ]. (TA.)

1 عَطِبَ ذ , (S, A, Mgh, O, Msb, K,) aor. عَطَبَ , (A, Mgh, Msb, K,) inf. n. عَطَبٌ, (S, * Mgh, * O, * Msb,) and مَعْطَبٌ also may be an inf. n. of the same, (Har p. 196,) He perished, or died: (S, A, Mgh, O, Msb, K:) [Freytag mentions عَطَبَ also in the same sense, as from the K, in which I do not find it:] it is said of a man, and of other than man: in a trad. it is said of seed-produce. (TA.) ― -b2- And He (a camel, and a horse,) flagged, or became powerless: (K, TA:) or stopped with his master [or rider ] from fatigue. (TA.) ― -b3- And عَطِبَ عَلَيْهِ He was, or became, violently, (O,) or most violently, (K,) angry with him. (O, K.) -A2- العَطْبُ signifies لِينُ القُطْنِ (O, * K) and الصُّوفِ, (O,) and نُعُومَتُهُ: (K:) you say, عَطَبَ, aor. عَطُبَ , (A, O, K,) inf. n. عَطْبٌ and عُطُوبٌ, (O,) It [i. e. cotton, and wool,] was, or became, soft. (A, O, * K. [See also عُطْبٌ, below.])

2 تَعْطِيبٌ ذ , (O, K,) inf. n. of عطّب, (TA,) signifies The brewing (عِلَاج) of beverage, or wine, in order that its odour may become good: (O, K:) so says Aboo-Sa'eed. (O.) The phrase رَحِيق مُعَطَّب occurs in a poem of Lebeed, as some relate it; but as others relate it, it is مُقَطَّب, which means “ mixed: ” (O, TA:) so says Az; and he adds, “ I know not what مُعَطَّب is. ” (TA.) -A2- Also, in a grape-vine, The appearing of the knots, or gems, in the places whence grow the bunches of grapes. (K.)

4 اعطبهُ ذ He (a man, Msb), or it (calamity, A), destroyed him, or caused him to perish. (S, A, O, Msb, K.)

8 اعتطب النَّارَ ذ He took fire in a portion of cotton: (A:) or اعتطب بِعُطْبَةٍ he took fire in a piece of rag (O, K) or a portion of cotton. (O.)

عُطْبٌ ذ and ↓ عُطُبٌ Cotton: (IAar, S, O, K:) and ↓ عُطْبَةٌ signifies a portion thereof, (S, A, O, TA,) or of wool. (TA.) [SM says,] In the T, العطب is said to mean لين القُطْنِ وَالصُّوفِ, [and so in the O, where it is written العَطْبُ, and said to be with fet-h,] and its n. un. is عطبة; but I have found it written with damm [to the ع]; therefore by لين seems to be meant لَيِّن [i. e. Such as is soft of cotton and of wool: which I think to be evidently a mistake: see 1]. (TA.)

عَطِبٌ ذ [ Perishing, or dying ]: see an ex., from a poet, voce رُبَّ.

عُطُبٌ ذ : see عُطْبٌ.

عُطْبَةٌ ذ : see عُطْبٌ. ― -b2- Also A portion of rag by means of which fire is taken: (K:) or a portion of burning cotton (S, A, O) or rag: (S, O:) so in the saying, أَجِدُ رِيحَ عُطْبَةٍ [ I perceive the odour of a portion of burning cotton or rag ]. (S, A, O.)

عَوْطَبٌ ذ A calamity, or misfortune: (As, O, K:) from العَطَبُ [inf. n. of عَطِبَ]. (As, TA.) ― -b2- And The main part, or fathomless deep, of the sea: (As, K:) likewise from العَطَبُ: (As, TA:) and so عَوْبَطٌ, (K in art. عبط,) formed by transposition: (TA ibid.:) or the deepest place in the sea: (IAar, O:) or a depressed part between two waves. (IAar, O, K.)

أَعْطَبُ ذ More [and most ] soft: so in the saying, هٰذَا الكَبْشُ أَعْطَبُ مِنْ هٰذَا [ This ram is more soft in his wool than this ]. (O.)

مَعْطَبٌ ذ A place of perdition or destruction: pl. مَعَاطِبُ. (S, O, Msb.) [See also 1, first sentence.]

مُعْطِبٌ ذ One who scants his household; syn. مُقْتِرٌ. (O, K.)

عَطْدٌ ذ Hardness, severity, rigour, or difficulty. (IDrd, * O, * L.)

عَطَوَّدٌ ذ Hard, severe, rigorous, or difficult: (IDrd, O, L, K:) applied in this sense to anything: and particularly to a journey: or in this case meaning distant. (L.) ― -b2- A quick pace, or rate of going: (S, O, L, K:) and so عَطَرَّدٌ [q. v.]. (L.) ― -b3- A high mountain: (O, L, K, TA: [in the CK, من الحِبالِ is erroneously put for مِنَ الجِبَالِ:]) as also عَصَوَّدٌ and عَطَرَّدٌ. (L.) ― -b4- A long day: (O, K:) a complete day (L) or year: (Ibn-'Abbád, O, K:) a whole day. (T, O, L, K.) One says, ذَهَبَ عَطَوَّدًا He went away a whole day. (O, K.) ― -b5- A conspicuous, clear, open, road, along which one goes whithersoever he will. (ISh, O, L, K.) ― -b6- A generous, noble, liberal, man. (Ibn-'Abbád, O, K.) ― -b7- A sharpened spearhead. (Ibn-'Abbád, O, K.) ― -b8- Accord. to [IDrd and] Az [and J], this word is quasi-coordinate to the quinqueliteral-radical class. (TA.)

1 عَطِرَتْ ذ , (S, A, O, Msb,) aor. عَطَرَ , inf. n. عَطَرٌ, (S, O, Msb,) said of a woman, (S, A, Msb,) She perfumed herself; (TA;) and ↓ تعطّرت, (A, O, Msb,) inf. n. تَعَطُّرٌ; (S;) and ↓ استعطرت; (A;) [signify the same: also عَطِرَ he (a man) was sweet in the odour of his body; and عَطِرَتْ, said of a woman, signifies the same: see the part. n. عَطِرٌ:] and ↓ استعطرت signifies she (a woman) made use of perfume. 2 عطّر ذ He perfumed a woman [&c.; and so, app., ↓ اعطر]. (Msb.) ― -b2- بَطْنِى عَطِّرِى, (K,) but in other lexicons than the K we find ↓ أَعْطِرِى, (TA,) [occurring in a prov.,] see in art. سَأر [voce سَائِرٌ]. (K.)

5 تَعَطَّرَ see 1. ― -b2- It is said in a trad., of Mohammad, كَانَ يَكْرَهُ تَعَطُّرَ النِّسَاآءِ وَتَشَبُّهَهُنَّ بِا@لرِّجَالِ, (O, K, TA,) meaning He used to dislike women's perfuming themselves with perfume of which the odour was perceived like that of men [ and their affecting to be like men ]: (TA:) or their being without ornaments (O, K, TA) and dye on the hands &c. [ and their affecting to be like men ]; (TA;) the ر in this case being substituted for ل: (O, K, * TA:) or تعطَّر, here, is from what follows: (TA:) ― -b3- تعطّرت She (a woman, O, TA) remained in the house, or tent, of, (O, K,) or with, (L,) her father and mother, and did not marry. (O, L, K, TA.)

10 اـِسْتَعْطَرَ see 1, in two places.

عِطْرٌ ذ Perfume; an odoriferous, or a fragrant, substance; syn. طِيبٌ: (S, A, O, K:) pl. [of pauc.] أَعْطَارٌ (A) and [of mult.] عُطُورٌ. (A, O, K.) [And ↓ عِطَارَةٌ, as used in the present day, and in medical books, signifies Perfumes and drugs: see an ex. voce صِيْدَلَةٌ.] ― -b2- [عِطْرُ الأَمَةِ A certain berb: see ذَفِرٌ.]

عَطِرٌ ذ , applied to a man, (K, TA,) and عَطِرَةٌ, applied to a woman, (S, A, O, Msb, K,) Having perfume upon, or using perfume for, or perfuming, [ himself, and] herself; (S, O;) and ↓ مُتَعَطِّرَةٌ, applied to a woman, (S, K,) signifies the same. (S) [See also عَاطِرٌ, and مُعَطَّرَةٌ, and مِعْطِيرٌ.] ― -b2- Also عَطِرٌ, Sweet in the odour of his body; and in like manner عَطِرَةٌ applied to a woman. (TA.) اِمْرَأَةٌ عَطِرَةٌ مَطِرَةٌ means A woman who perfumes and cleanses and washes herself much: (O:) [or is sweet in the odour of her body, and often uses the tooth-stick; for] مَطِرَةٌ signifies here كَثِيرَةُ السِّوَاكِ. (TA.) ― -b3- عَطِرَةٌ A she-camel easy of sale in the market; (O, K;) that sells herself by her goodliness; (TA;) as also ↓ عَطَّارَةٌ (O, K) and ↓ مِعْطَارَةٌ: (TA:) or a she-camel of generous race, or excel-lent; (S, O, K;) as also ↓ مِعْطَارٌ (S, O, TA) and ↓ مِعْطَارَةٌ and ↓ مُعْطِرَةٌ [or مُعْطَرَةٌ?]; (K, TA;) or ↓ مِعْطَرَةٌ: (O:) and عَطِرَاتٌ and ↓ مَعَاطِرُ she-camels goodly, and of generous race, or excel-lent. عِطْرِيَّةٌ ذ [ Fragrance ]. (TA in art. زرد.)

عِطَارَةٌ ذ The trade of a seller of perfumes. (K.) ― -b2- See also عِطْرٌ.

عَطَّارٌ ذ A seller of perfumes; (O, K;) and ↓ مِعْطِيرٌ signifies the same in the saying of El-'Ajjáj, describing the [wild] he-ass and the she-asses, يَتْبَعْنَ جَأْبًا كَمُدُقِّ المِعْطِيرْ [ They (the she-asses) follow a bulky male like the stone with which the seller of perfumes pounds, or pulverizes, his perfume ]. (S, O.)

عَطَّارَةٌ ذ : see عَطِرٌ.

عَاطِرٌ ذ One who loves perfume: (IAar, O, K:) or i. q. عَطِرٌ [q. v.]: (TA:) pl. عُطُرٌ. (O, K.)

أَعْطَرُ العَرَبِ ذ The most sweet, in perfume, of the Arabs. (TA, from a trad.)

مُعْطِرٌ ذ [or مُعْطَرٌ is the correct form, pass. part. n. of أَعْطَرَ, and agreeable with the pl. in two copies of the S,] (K, TA) A beautiful she-camel, as though there were a dye upon her fur by reason of her beauty: (TA; and so the pl. is explained in the S:) or strong and beautiful; as also ↓ مِعْطَارٌ: (K, TA:) pl. of the former مُعْطِرَاتٌ, (TA,) or مُعْطَرَاتٌ, (S, O,) meaning fat: or red, as though dyed. (O.) ― -b2- مُعْطِرَةٌ [or مُعْطَرَةٌ] A red she-goat. (El-Báhilee, as cited in the TA.) ― -b3- See also عَطِرٌ.

مِعْطَرَةٌ ذ : see عَطِرٌ, last sentence.

مُعَطَّرَةٌ ذ , applied to a woman [ Perfumed: see 2]. (K.)

مِعْطَارٌ ذ and مِعْطَارَةٌ: see مِعْطِيرٌ; each in two places. ― -b2- and see مُعْطِرٌ; and عَطِرٌ, in three places.

مِعْطِيرٌ ذ , applied to a woman, (Msb,) or to a man and a woman, (S, K,) and ↓ مِعْطَارٌ, applied to a woman, (S, Msb,) or to a man and a woman, (K,) and ↓ مِعْطَارَةٌ, (K,) One who perfumes himself, and herself, much; (S, Msb;) and who frequently does so: and ↓ مِعْطَارٌ and ↓ مِعْطَارَةٌ a woman who is accustomed to do so: pl. مَعَاطِيرُ. (TA.) Lh says that an epithet of the measure مِفْعَالٌ is mase. and fem. without ة, except in some extraordinary instances, in which the fem. is with ة. (TA.) ― -b2- Also مِعْطِيرٌ, A she-camel red, and whose sweat has a sweet odour. (L, and so in the CK.) In [some of] the copies of the K, طَيِّبَةُ العَرْفِ is put by mistake for طيّبة العَرَق. Q. 1 عَطْرِدْهُ لَنَا ذ Make thou it to be to us, (O, K,) with thee, or in thy estimation, (O,) like the promise, (كَالعِدَةِ, K, TA, inf. n. of وَعَدَ, and this is the only explanation given by the leading authorities on strange words, TA, [in the O, كَالعِدَّةِ,]) or like the apparatus that is prepared for the casualties of fortune; (كَالعُدَّةِ and العَتَادِ; Ibn-'Abbád, O, K;) and ↓ اِجْعَلْهُ لَنَا عُطْرُودًا signifies the same. (O, K.)

عَطَرَّدٌ ذ i. q. عَطَوَّدٌ in its several meanings: (K:) signifying High, applied to a mountain: ― -b2- and Tall, applied to a man or camel: (L:) ― -b3- and Long, applied to a day; and to a limit, term, reach, or goal, or to a heat, or single run to a goal or limit; (S, O, L;) and to a road: (L:) ― -b4- and Generous, noble, or liberal, applied to a man: (O:) ― -b5- and Quick, applied to a pace, or rate of going: (L:) ― -b6- and Sharpened, applied to a spear-head. (O.)

اِجْعَلْهُ لَنَا عُطْرُودًا ذ : see the first paragraph.

عُطَارِدٌ ذ or عُطَارِدُ, (accord. to different copies of the S,) or both, being perfectly and imperfectly decl., (K,) but what is the cause of its being imperfectly decl., with the quality of a proper name, requires consideration, (MF,) [ The planet Mercury; ] the star of the scribes; (Az, TA:) one of the stars called الخُنَّسُ; (S, O, K:) accord. to the K [and O], in the sixth heaven [or sphere ]: but the sheykh 'Alee El-Makdisee says that this is a mistake, for it is well known to be in one second. (TA.)

1 عَطَسَ ذ , aor. عَطِسَ (S, A, O, Msb, K) and عَطُسَ , (S, O, Msb, K,) the former of which is the more approved, and therefore it alone is mentioned in some copies [of the K], (TA,) inf. n. عَطْسٌ, (Msb,) or عُطَاسٌ, (S, * A,) or both, (O, K,) or the latter is a simple subst., (TA,) He sneezed; expl. by أَتَتْهُ العَطْسَةُ: (A, K:) [properly] said only of a man. (MF, from the “ Iktiráh. ”) It is said in a trad., كَانَ يُحِبُّ العُطَاسَ وَيَكْرَهُ التَّثَاؤُبَ [ He (Mohammad) used to like sneezing, and dislike yawning ]: (O, TA:) because the former is accompanied by lightness of the body, and openness of the pores, and facilitation of movements; whereas, in yawning, the contrary is the case; and these properties are caused by taking light nourishment and little food and drink: (TA:) but the Arabs used to augur evil from sneezing; (A, O;) so that if a man were journeying and heard a sneeze, it prevented him from going on. (A.) ― -b2- عَطَسَ الصُّبْحُ, (S, O, K,) inf. n. عَطْسٌ, (TA,) (tropical:) The dawn broke: (S, K:) or shone forth. (A, Msb.) ― -b3- عَطَسَتْ بِهِ اللُّجَمُ, (A, O, K,) and اللُّجُمُ, (A,) Evil omens brought ill luck upon him: (A, O: *) لُجَمٌ and لُجُمٌ are pls. of لُجْمَةٌ and لِجَامٌ, which are syn. with طِيَرَةٌ, because the طيرة refrains one from a thing that he wants: for they used to augur evil from sneezing [as remarked above]: (A:) or he died; (A, O, K;) as also عَطَسَ, alone.
