غَايَةَ الْإِسَاءَةِ وَالْأَمْنِ فِي الدُّنْيَا حَتَّى كَأَنَّهُمْ قَدْ جَاءَهُمْ كِتَابٌ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَعَهْدٌ، أَنَّهُمْ مِنْ أَهْلِ السَّعَادَةِ، وَقَدْ حَكَمُوا لِأَنْفُسِهِمْ أَنَّهُمْ أَهْلُ الْهُدَى، وَأَنَّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ضَالُّونَ افْتِرَاءً عَلَى اللَّهِ، وَتَجَرَّأُوا عَلَى الْقَوْلِ عَلَيْهِ بِلَا عِلْمٍ.

(from previous page) ⟵ When the Almighty mentioned the recompense of the criminals and the recompense of the believers, and mentioned the great disparity between them, He informed that the criminals in this world used to mock the believers, ridicule them, laugh at them, and wink at them when they passed by them, out of contempt and disdain for them. Despite this, you see them complacent, with no fear crossing their minds. "And when they returned to their people, morning or evening, they returned joyful," meaning: happy and delighted. This is one of the greatest forms of delusion, that they combined the utmost evil and security in this world, as if a book and a covenant had come to them from God, stating that they are among the people of happiness. They judged for themselves that they are the people of guidance, and that the believers are misguided, fabricating lies against God, and daring to speak about Him without knowledge.

قَالَ تَعَالَى: {وَمَا أُرْسِلُوا عَلَيْهِمْ حَافِظِينَ} أَيْ: وَمَا أُرْسِلُوا وُكَلَاءَ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ مُلْزِمِينَ بِحِفْظِ أَعْمَالِهِمْ، حَتَّى يَحْرِصُوا عَلَى رَمْيِهِمْ بِالضَّلَالِ، وَمَا هَذَا مِنْهُمْ إِلَّا تَعَنُّتٌ وَعِنَادٌ وَتَلَاعُبٌ لَيْسَ لَهُ مُسْتَنَدٌ وَلَا بُرْهَانٌ.

Allah the Almighty says: {But they had not been sent as guardians over them}, meaning they were not sent as agents over the believers, tasked with monitoring their deeds, so as to be so keen on accusing them of error. This behavior from them is nothing but obstinacy, stubbornness, and mockery, lacking any basis or proof.

وَلِهَذَا كَانَ جَزَاؤُهُمْ فِي الْآخِرَةِ مِنْ جِنْسِ عَمَلِهِمْ، قَالَ تَعَالَى: {فَالْيَوْمَ} أَيْ: يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ، {الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنَ الْكُفَّارِ يَضْحَكُونَ} حِينَ يَرَوْنَهُمْ فِي غَمَرَاتِ الْعَذَابِ يَتَقَلَّبُونَ، وَقَدْ ذَهَبَ عَنْهُمْ مَا كَانُوا يَفْتَرُونَ، وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ فِي غَايَةِ الرَّاحَةِ وَالطُّمَأْنِينَةِ {عَلَى الْأَرَائِكِ} وَهِيَ السُّرُرُ الْمُزَيَّنَةُ، {يَنْظُرُونَ} إِلَى مَا أَعَدَّ اللَّهُ لَهُمْ مِنَ النَّعِيمِ، وَيَنْظُرُونَ إِلَى وَجْهِ رَبِّهِمُ الْكَرِيمِ.

The Almighty says: {So today}, meaning on the Day of Resurrection, {those who believed are laughing at the disbelievers}, as they see them tossing in the depths of torment, their fabrications having vanished. Meanwhile, the believers are in the utmost comfort and tranquility {on thrones}, which are decorated couches, {looking} at the bliss Allah has prepared for them and at the Face of their Generous Lord.
