تَمَكَّنَ لَهُ السَّلَامَةُ وَأَمَّا الْمُنَافِقُونَ فَأَنَّى لَهُمُ السَّلَامَةُ، وَهُوَ تَعَالَى مُحِيطٌ بِهِمْ قُدْرَةً وَعِلْمًا فَلَا يَفُوتُونَهُ وَلَا يُعْجِزُونَهُ، بَلْ يَحْفَظُ عَلَيْهِمْ أَعْمَالَهُمْ، وَيُجَازِيهِمْ عَلَيْهَا أَتَمَّ الْجَزَاءِ. وَلَمَّا كَانُوا مُبْتَلَيْنَ بِالصَّمَمِ وَالْبَكَمِ وَالْعَمَى الْمَعْنَوِيِّ، وَمَسْدُودَةً عَلَيْهِمْ طُرُقُ الْإِيمَانِ قَالَ تَعَالَى: {وَلَوْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ لَذَهَبَ بِسَمْعِهِمْ وَأَبْصَارِهِمْ} أَيْ: الْحِسِّيَّةَ، فَفِيهِ تَحْذِيرٌ لَهُمْ وَتَخْوِيفٌ بِالْعُقُوبَةِ الدُّنْيَوِيَّةِ، لِيَحْذَرُوا، فَيَرْتَدِعُوا عَنْ بَعْضِ شَرِّهِمْ وَنِفَاقِهِمْ، {إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ} فَلَا يُعْجِزُهُ شَيْءٌ، وَمِنْ قُدْرَتِهِ أَنَّهُ إِذَا شَاءَ شَيْئًا فَعَلَهُ مِنْ غَيْرِ مُمَانِعٍ وَلَا مُعَارِضٍ. وَفِي هَذِهِ الْآيَةِ وَمَا أَشْبَهَهَا رَدٌّ عَلَى الْقَدَرِيَّةِ الْقَائِلِينَ بِأَنَّ أَفْعَالَهُمْ غَيْرُ دَاخِلَةٍ فِي قُدْرَةِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى لِأَنَّ أَفْعَالَهُمْ مِنْ جُمْلَةِ الْأَشْيَاءِ الدَّاخِلَةِ فِي قَوْلِهِ: {إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ}. {يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اعْبُدُوا رَبَّكُمُ الَّذِي خَلَقَكُمْ وَالَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ * الَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمُ الْأَرْضَ فِرَاشًا وَالسَّمَاءَ بِنَاءً وَأَنْزَلَ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً فَأَخْرَجَ بِهِ مِنَ الثَّمَرَاتِ رِزْقًا لَكُمْ فَلَا تَجْعَلُوا لِلَّهِ أَنْدَادًا وَأَنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ}. هَذَا أَمْرٌ عَامٌّ لِكُلِّ النَّاسِ بِأَمْرٍ عَامٍّ وَهُوَ الْعِبَادَةُ الْجَامِعَةُ لِامْتِثَالِ أَوَامِرِ اللَّهِ وَاجْتِنَابِ نَوَاهِيهِ، وَتَصْدِيقِ خَبَرِهِ، فَأَمَرَهُمْ تَعَالَى بِمَا خَلَقَهُمْ لَهُ، قَالَ تَعَالَى: {وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالْإِنْسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ}. ثُمَّ اسْتَدَلَّ عَلَى وُجُوبِ عِبَادَتِهِ وَحْدَهُ بِأَنَّهُ رَبُّكُمُ الَّذِي رَبَّاكُمْ بِأَصْنَافِ النِّعَمِ، فَخَلَقَكُمْ بَعْدَ الْعَدَمِ، وَخَلَقَ الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ، وَأَنْعَمَ عَلَيْكُمْ بِالنِّعَمِ الظَّاهِرَةِ وَالْبَاطِنَةِ، فَجَعَلَ لَكُمُ الْأَرْضَ فِرَاشًا تَسْتَقِرُّونَ عَلَيْهَا، وَتَنْتَفِعُونَ بِالْأَبْنِيَةِ وَالزِّرَاعَةِ وَالْحِرَاثَةِ وَالسُّلُوكِ مِنْ مَحَلٍّ إِلَى مَحَلٍّ، وَغَيْرِ ذَلِكَ مِنْ أَنْوَاعِ الِانْتِفَاعِ بِهَا، وَجَعَلَ السَّمَاءَ بِنَاءً لِمَسْكَنِكُمْ، وَأَوْدَعَ فِيهَا مِنَ الْمَنَافِعِ مَا هُوَ مِنْ ضَرُورَاتِكُمْ وَحَاجَاتِكُمْ، كَالشَّمْسِ وَالْقَمَرِ وَالنُّجُومِ. {وَأَنْزَلَ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً} وَالسَّمَاءُ: هُوَ كُلُّ مَا عَلَا فَوْقَكَ فَهُوَ سَمَاءٌ وَلِهَذَا قَالَ الْمُفَسِّرُونَ: الْمُرَادُ بِالسَّمَاءِ هُنَا السَّحَابُ، فَأَنْزَلَ مِنْهُ تَعَالَى مَاءً فَأَخْرَجَ بِهِ مِنَ الثَّمَرَاتِ كَالْحُبُوبِ وَالثِّمَارِ، مِنْ نَخِيلٍ، وَفَوَاكِهَ، وَزُرُوعٍ وَغَيْرِهَا {رِزْقًا لَكُمْ} بِهِ تَرْتَزِقُونَ وَتَقُوتُونَ وَتَعِيشُونَ وَتَفَكَّهُونَ. {فَلَا تَجْعَلُوا لِلَّهِ أَنْدَادًا} أَيْ: نُظَرَاءَ وَأَشْبَاهًا مِنَ الْمَخْلُوقِينَ فَتَعْبُدُونَهُمْ كَمَا تَعْبُدُونَ اللَّهَ، وَتُحِبُّونَهُمْ كَمَا تُحِبُّونَ اللَّهَ وَهُمْ مِثْلُكُمْ مَخْلُوقُونَ مَرْزُوقُونَ مُدَبَّرُونَ لَا يَمْلِكُونَ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ فِي السَّمَاءِ وَلَا فِي الْأَرْضِ، وَلَا يَنْفَعُونَكُمْ وَلَا يَضُرُّونَ {وَأَنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ} أَنَّ اللَّهَ لَيْسَ لَهُ شَرِيكٌ وَلَا نَظِيرٌ، لَا فِي الْخَلْقِ وَالرِّزْقِ، وَالتَّدْبِيرِ، وَلَا فِي الْعِبَادَةِ فَكَيْفَ تَعْبُدُونَ مَعَهُ آلِهَةً أُخْرَى مَعَ عِلْمِكُمْ بِذَلِكَ؟ هَذَا مِنْ أَعْجَبِ الْعَجَبِ، وَأَسْفَهِ السَّفَهِ.

تَمَكَّنَ لَهُ السَّلَامَةُ
Safety is granted to him.
وَأَمَّا الْمُنَافِقُونَ فَأَنَّى لَهُمُ السَّلَامَةُ،
As for the hypocrites, how could they ever be safe?
وَهُوَ تَعَالَى مُحِيطٌ بِهِمْ قُدْرَةً وَعِلْمًا
The Exalted encompasses them in both power and knowledge.
فَلَا يَفُوتُونَهُ وَلَا يُعْجِزُونَهُ،
They cannot escape Him, nor can they frustrate His will.
بَلْ يَحْفَظُ عَلَيْهِمْ أَعْمَالَهُمْ، وَيُجَازِيهِمْ عَلَيْهَا أَتَمَّ الْجَزَاءِ.
Rather, He preserves their deeds and rewards them with the most complete recompense.
وَلَمَّا كَانُوا مُبْتَلَيْنَ بِالصَّمَمِ وَالْبَكَمِ وَالْعَمَى الْمَعْنَوِيِّ، وَمَسْدُودَةً عَلَيْهِمْ طُرُقُ الْإِيمَانِ قَالَ تَعَالَى: {وَلَوْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ لَذَهَبَ بِسَمْعِهِمْ وَأَبْصَارِهِمْ}
Since they were afflicted with spiritual deafness, muteness, and blindness, and the paths of faith were blocked to them, the Exalted said: 'If Allah had willed, He could have taken away their hearing and their sight.'
أَيْ: الْحِسِّيَّةَ، فَفِيهِ تَحْذِيرٌ لَهُمْ وَتَخْوِيفٌ بِالْعُقُوبَةِ الدُّنْيَوِيَّةِ، لِيَحْذَرُوا، فَيَرْتَدِعُوا عَنْ بَعْضِ شَرِّهِمْ وَنِفَاقِهِمْ،
This refers to their physical senses; it serves as a warning and an intimidation through worldly punishment, so that they might take heed and refrain from some of their wickedness and hypocrisy.
{إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ} فَلَا يُعْجِزُهُ شَيْءٌ،
'Indeed, Allah is over all things competent,' so nothing can incapacitate Him.
وَمِنْ قُدْرَتِهِ أَنَّهُ إِذَا شَاءَ شَيْئًا فَعَلَهُ مِنْ غَيْرِ مُمَانِعٍ وَلَا مُعَارِضٍ.
Part of His power is that if He wills a thing, He does it without any hindrance or opposition.
وَفِي هَذِهِ الْآيَةِ وَمَا أَشْبَهَهَا رَدٌّ عَلَى الْقَدَرِيَّةِ الْقَائِلِينَ بِأَنَّ أَفْعَالَهُمْ غَيْرُ دَاخِلَةٍ فِي قُدْرَةِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى
This verse and others like it refute the Qadariyyah, who claim that their actions fall outside the power of the Exalted God.
لِأَنَّ أَفْعَالَهُمْ مِنْ جُمْلَةِ الْأَشْيَاءِ الدَّاخِلَةِ فِي قَوْلِهِ: {إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ}.
Their actions are among the totality of things included in His statement: 'Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.'
{يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اعْبُدُوا رَبَّكُمُ الَّذِي خَلَقَكُمْ وَالَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ}
O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous -
{الَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمُ الْأَرْضَ فِرَاشًا وَالسَّمَاءَ بِنَاءً وَأَنْزَلَ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً فَأَخْرَجَ بِهِ مِنَ الثَّمَرَاتِ رِزْقًا لَكُمْ فَلَا تَجْعَلُوا لِلَّهِ أَنْدَادًا وَأَنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ}
[He] who made for you the earth a bed [spread out] and the sky a ceiling and sent down from the sky, rain and brought forth thereby fruits as provision for you. So do not attribute to Allah equals while you know [that there is nothing similar to Him].
هَذَا أَمْرٌ عَامٌّ لِكُلِّ النَّاسِ بِأَمْرٍ عَامٍّ وَهُوَ الْعِبَادَةُ الْجَامِعَةُ لِامْتِثَالِ أَوَامِرِ اللَّهِ وَاجْتِنَابِ نَوَاهِيهِ، وَتَصْدِيقِ خَبَرِهِ،
This is a general command to all people, calling them to the worship that encompasses obedience to God's commands, avoidance of His prohibitions, and belief in His revelation.
فَأَمَرَهُمْ تَعَالَى بِمَا خَلَقَهُمْ لَهُ، قَالَ تَعَالَى: {وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالْإِنْسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ}.
The Exalted commanded them to do that for which He created them, as He said: 'I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.'
ثُمَّ اسْتَدَلَّ عَلَى وُجُوبِ عِبَادَتِهِ وَحْدَهُ بِأَنَّهُ رَبُّكُمُ الَّذِي رَبَّاكُمْ بِأَصْنَافِ النِّعَمِ،
He then established the obligation of worshipping Him alone by noting that He is your Lord, who has nurtured you with various types of blessings.
فَخَلَقَكُمْ بَعْدَ الْعَدَمِ، وَخَلَقَ الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ، وَأَنْعَمَ عَلَيْكُمْ بِالنِّعَمِ الظَّاهِرَةِ وَالْبَاطِنَةِ،
He created you from nothing, created those before you, and bestowed upon you both apparent and hidden blessings.
فَجَعَلَ لَكُمُ الْأَرْضَ فِرَاشًا تَسْتَقِرُّونَ عَلَيْهَا، وَتَنْتَفِعُونَ بِالْأَبْنِيَةِ وَالزِّرَاعَةِ وَالْحِرَاثَةِ وَالسُّلُوكِ مِنْ مَحَلٍّ إِلَى مَحَلٍّ، وَغَيْرِ ذَلِكَ مِنْ أَنْوَاعِ الِانْتِفَاعِ بِهَا،
He made the earth a bed upon which you settle, and you benefit from it through building, agriculture, tilling, traveling from place to place, and other forms of utility.
وَجَعَلَ السَّمَاءَ بِنَاءً لِمَسْكَنِكُمْ، وَأَوْدَعَ فِيهَا مِنَ الْمَنَافِعِ مَا هُوَ مِنْ ضَرُورَاتِكُمْ وَحَاجَاتِكُمْ، كَالشَّمْسِ وَالْقَمَرِ وَالنُّجُومِ.
He made the sky a structure for your dwelling, and placed within it benefits essential to your needs, such as the sun, the moon, and the stars.
{وَأَنْزَلَ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً} وَالسَّمَاءُ: هُوَ كُلُّ مَا عَلَا فَوْقَكَ فَهُوَ سَمَاءٌ
'And sent down, rain, from the sky.' The 'sky' refers to everything that is above you.
وَلِهَذَا قَالَ الْمُفَسِّرُونَ: الْمُرَادُ بِالسَّمَاءِ هُنَا السَّحَابُ،
For this reason, the exegetes say that the intended meaning of 'sky' here is the clouds.
فَأَنْزَلَ مِنْهُ تَعَالَى مَاءً فَأَخْرَجَ بِهِ مِنَ الثَّمَرَاتِ كَالْحُبُوبِ وَالثِّمَارِ، مِنْ نَخِيلٍ، وَفَوَاكِهَ، وَزُرُوعٍ وَغَيْرِهَا {رِزْقًا لَكُمْ} بِهِ تَرْتَزِقُونَ وَتَقُوتُونَ وَتَعِيشُونَ وَتَفَكَّهُونَ.
The Exalted sent down water from them, bringing forth fruits such as grains, palm trees, produce, and crops as 'provision for you,' by which you are sustained, nourished, live, and enjoy life.
{فَلَا تَجْعَلُوا لِلَّهِ أَنْدَادًا} أَيْ: نُظَرَاءَ وَأَشْبَاهًا مِنَ الْمَخْلُوقِينَ فَتَعْبُدُونَهُمْ كَمَا تَعْبُدُونَ اللَّهَ، وَتُحِبُّونَهُمْ كَمَا تُحِبُّونَ اللَّهَ
'So do not attribute equals to Allah,' meaning: do not set up peers or likenesses from among the created beings, worshipping them as you worship Allah, or loving them as you love Allah.
وَهُمْ مِثْلُكُمْ مَخْلُوقُونَ مَرْزُوقُونَ مُدَبَّرُونَ لَا يَمْلِكُونَ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ فِي السَّمَاءِ وَلَا فِي الْأَرْضِ، وَلَا يَنْفَعُونَكُمْ وَلَا يَضُرُّونَ
They are like you: created, provided for, and managed; they do not possess the weight of an atom in the heavens or on earth, and they can neither benefit nor harm you.
{وَأَنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ} أَنَّ اللَّهَ لَيْسَ لَهُ شَرِيكٌ وَلَا نَظِيرٌ، لَا فِي الْخَلْقِ وَالرِّزْقِ، وَالتَّدْبِيرِ، وَلَا فِي الْعِبَادَةِ
'While you know' that Allah has no partner and no peer—not in creation, provision, or management, nor in worship.
فَكَيْفَ تَعْبُدُونَ مَعَهُ آلِهَةً أُخْرَى مَعَ عِلْمِكُمْ بِذَلِكَ؟ هَذَا مِنْ أَعْجَبِ الْعَجَبِ، وَأَسْفَهِ السَّفَهِ.
So how can you worship other gods alongside Him, despite your knowledge of that? This is among the most astonishing of wonders and the most foolish of follies. This verse combines the command to worship Allah alone and the prohibition of worshipping anything other than Him, along with an explanation of the dazzling proof for the obligation of worshipping Him and the invalidity of worshipping anyone other than Him, which is the mention of the Oneness of Lordship, encompassing His sole creation, provision, and governance. ⟶ (sentence continues on next page)
