رَوَائِعُ الْآثَارِ نَصٌّ أَدَبِيٌّ.

Wonders of Antiquities is a literary text.

خَلِيلُ مُطْرَان (١٨٧١ - ١٩٤٩م): شَاعِرٌ عَرَبِيٌّ لُبْنَانِيٌّ شَهِيرٌ، عَاشَ مُعْظَمَ حَيَاتِهِ فِي مِصْرَ، لُقِّبَ بِشَاعِرِ الْقُطْرَيْنِ، وَعُرِفَ بِغَوْصِهِ فِي الْمَعَانِي، وَجَمْعِهِ بَيْنَ الثَّقَافَةِ الْعَرَبِيَّةِ وَالْأَجْنَبِيَّةِ.

Khalil Mutran (1871–1949): A renowned Lebanese-Arab poet who spent most of his life in Egypt. Known as the 'Poet of the Two Regions,' he was celebrated for his profound insights and his ability to blend Arab and foreign cultures.

لَهُ دِيوَانُ شِعْرٍ مَطْبُوعٌ أَخَذَ مِنْهُ هَذَا النَّصُّ.

He published a collection of poetry from which this text is taken.

Lesson Five.

آثَارُ مَدِينَةِ بَعْلَبَكَ.

The Antiquities of Baalbek.

مَدْخَلٌ إِلَى النَّصِّ: تَرَكَ الْقُدَمَاءُ آثَاراً خَالِدَةً تَدُلُّ عَلَى عَرَاقَةِ حَضَارَتِهِمْ.

Introduction to the text: The ancients left behind eternal monuments that testify to the nobility of their civilization.

وَكَانَتْ قَلْعَةُ بَعْلَبَكَ الَّتِي حَوَتْ أَشْكَالاً مُتَنَوِّعَةً لِلْفَنِّ الْجَمِيلِ إِحْدَى تِلْكَ الرَّوَائِعِ الَّتِي أَضْفَتْ عَلَيْهَا الْقُرُونُ هَيْبَةً وَوَقَاراً جَعَلَتِ الشَّاعِرَ يَقِفُ أَمَامَهَا مَذْهُولاً مِنْ شِدَّةِ تَأَثُّرِهِ بِهَا.

The citadel of Baalbek, with its diverse forms of exquisite art, stands as one of those wonders. Centuries have imbued it with such prestige and dignity that the poet stands before it, overwhelmed by its impact.

إِيهِ آثَارَ بَعْلَبَكَ سَلَامٌ بَعْدَ طُولِ النَّوَى وَبُعْدِ الْمَزَارِ.

Oh, ruins of Baalbek, peace be upon you after such a long separation and distance.

حَارَتِ الْبَرِيَّةُ فِيهَا فِتْنَةُ السَّامِعِينَ وَالنُّظَّارِ.

All of creation stands bewildered by you, a fascination for those who hear of you and those who gaze upon you.

عَجَزَاتٌ مِنَ الْبِنَاءِ كِبَارٌ لِأُنَاسٍ مِلْءَ الزَّمَانِ كِبَارٌ.

Great feats of architecture, built by a people who remain great throughout time.

زَادَهَا الشَّيْبُ حُرْمَةً وَجَلَالاً شِهَابُهُ يَدُ الْأَعْصَارِ.

The passage of ages has only added to their sanctity and majesty; they are shaped by the hands of time.

مَثَّلَ الْقَوْمُ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ عَجِيبٍ يَهْتَمُّ تَمْثِيلَ حِكْمَةٍ وَاقْتِدَارٍ.

The people captured every wonder, reflecting both wisdom and power.

صَنَعُوا مِنْ جَمَادِهِ ثَمَراً يُجْنَى وَلَكِنْ بِالْعَقْلِ وَالْأَبْصَارِ.

They turned inanimate stone into fruit to be harvested—not by hand, but by the mind and the eye.

وَضُرُوباً مِنْ كُلِّ زَهْرٍ أَنِيقٍ لَمْ تَفُتْهُ نَضَارَةُ الْأَزْهَارِ.

They carved every elegant flower, losing none of the freshness of real blooms.

وَشُمُوساً مُضِيئَةً وَشُعَاعاً بَاهِرَاتٍ لَكِنَّهَا مِنْ حِجَارٍ.

They crafted luminous suns and dazzling rays, yet they are made of stone.

وَأُسُوداً يُخْشَى التَّحَفُّزُ مِنْهَا وَيُرَوِّعُ الشُّكُوتُ كَالتَّزْأَارِ.

They sculpted lions poised to spring, their silence as terrifying as their roar.

تِلْكَ آيَاتُهُمْ وَمَا بَرِحَتْ فِي كُلِّ آنٍ رَوَائِعَ الزُّوَّارِ.

These are their marks, and they remain, for every generation, a wonder to all who visit.
