(from previous page) ⟵ As for the Umayyad era, the art of elegy followed in the footsteps of the elegy poem in early Islam, and although some poets elegized for gain, we read many elegies that carry an overflowing emotion, especially if the elegized person was related to the poet. Among the most famous elegiac poets in this era are Al-Akhtal, Layla al-Akhyaliyya, and Jarir. The latter has a magnificent poem elegizing his wife, in which he depicts his intense sorrow at the departure of his life partner, his great love for her, and the magnitude of the tragedy that befell him and his children with her loss, saying:

لَوْلَا الْحَيَاءُ لَهَاجَنِي اسْتِعْبَارُ

Were it not for restraint, I would have been overcome by tears.

وَلَزُرْتُ قَبْرَكِ وَالْحَبِيبُ يُزَارُ

I would have visited your grave, for the beloved deserves to be visited.
