مُقَدِّمَةُ الإِمَامِ النَّوَوِيِّ رَحِمَهُ اللهُ. بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ. الحَمْدُ للهِ الوَاحِدِ القَهَّارِ العَزِيزِ الغَفَّارِ مُكَوِّرِ اللَّيْلِ عَلَى النَّهَارِ، تَذْكِرَةً لأُولِي القُلُوبِ وَالأَبْصَارِ، وَتَبْصِرَةً لِذَوِي الأَلْبَابِ وَالاعْتِبَارِ، الَّذِي أَيْقَظَ مِنْ خَلْقِهِ مَنِ اصْطَفَاهُ فَزَهَّدَهُمْ فِي هَذِهِ الدَّارِ، وَشَغَلَهُمْ بِمُرَاقَبَتِهِ وَإِدَامَةِ الأَفْكَارِ، وَمُلَازَمَةِ الاتِّعَاظِ وَالادِّكَارِ، وَوَفَّقَهُمْ لِلدُّؤُوبِ فِي طَاعَتِهِ، وَالتَّأَهُّبِ لِدَارِ القَرَارِ، وَالحَذَرِ لِمَا يُسْخِطُهُ وَيُوجِبُ دَارَ البَوَارِ، وَالمُحَافَظَةِ عَلَى ذَلِكَ مَعَ تَغَايُرِ الأَحْوَالِ وَالأَطْوَارِ. أَحْمَدُهُ أَبْلَغَ حَمْدٍ وَأَرْكَاهُ، وَأَسْمَلَهُ وَأَنْمَاهُ. وَأَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ البَرُّ الكَرِيمُ، الرَّؤُوفُ الرَّحِيمُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ، وَحَبِيبُهُ وَخَلِيلُهُ، الهَادِي إِلَى صِرَاطٍ مُسْتَقِيمٍ، وَالدَّاعِي إِلَى دِينٍ قَوِيمٍ، صَلَوَاتُ اللهِ وَسَلَامُهُ عَلَيْهِ، وَعَلَى سَائِرِ النَّبِيِّينَ، وَآلِ كُلٍّ، وَسَائِرِ الصَّالِحِينَ. أَمَّا بَعْدُ: فَقَدْ قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى: ﴿وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ مَا أُرِيدُ مِنْهُم مِّن رِّزْقٍ وَمَا أُرِيدُ أَن يُطْعِمُونِ﴾، وَهَذَا تَصْرِيحٌ بِأَنَّهُمْ خُلِقُوا لِلْعِبَادَةِ، فَحَقَّ عَلَيْهِمُ الِاعْتِنَاءُ بِمَا خُلِقُوا لَهُ وَالإِعْرَاضُ عَنْ حُظُوظِ الدُّنْيَا بِالزَّهَادَةِ، فَإِنَّهَا دَارُ نَفَادٍ لَا مَحَلُّ إِخْلَادٍ، وَمَرْكَبُ عُبُورٍ لَا مَنْزِلُ حُبُورٍ، وَمَشْرَعُ انْفِصَامٍ لَا مَوْطِنُ دَوَامٍ. فَلِهَذَا كَانَ الأَيْقَاظُ مِنْ أَهْلِهَا هُمُ العُبَّادَ، وَأَعْقَلُ النَّاسِ فِيهَا هُمُ الزُّهَّادَ. قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى: ﴿إِنَّمَا مَثَلُ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا كَمَاءٍ أَنزَلْنَاهُ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ فَاخْتَلَطَ بِهِ نَبَاتُ الْأَرْضِ مِمَّا يَأْكُلُ﴾.

مُقَدِّمَةُ الإِمَامِ النَّوَوِيِّ رَحِمَهُ اللهُ.
Introduction by Imam al-Nawawi, may Allah have mercy on him.
بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ.
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
الحَمْدُ للهِ الوَاحِدِ القَهَّارِ العَزِيزِ الغَفَّارِ مُكَوِّرِ اللَّيْلِ عَلَى النَّهَارِ، تَذْكِرَةً لأُولِي القُلُوبِ وَالأَبْصَارِ، وَتَبْصِرَةً لِذَوِي الأَلْبَابِ وَالاعْتِبَارِ،
Praise be to Allah, the One, the Subduer, the Mighty, the Forgiving, who alternates the night and the day as a reminder for those with hearts and vision, and an insight for those of intellect and reflection.
الَّذِي أَيْقَظَ مِنْ خَلْقِهِ مَنِ اصْطَفَاهُ فَزَهَّدَهُمْ فِي هَذِهِ الدَّارِ، وَشَغَلَهُمْ بِمُرَاقَبَتِهِ وَإِدَامَةِ الأَفْكَارِ، وَمُلَازَمَةِ الاتِّعَاظِ وَالادِّكَارِ، وَوَفَّقَهُمْ لِلدُّؤُوبِ فِي طَاعَتِهِ، وَالتَّأَهُّبِ لِدَارِ القَرَارِ، وَالحَذَرِ لِمَا يُسْخِطُهُ وَيُوجِبُ دَارَ البَوَارِ، وَالمُحَافَظَةِ عَلَى ذَلِكَ مَعَ تَغَايُرِ الأَحْوَالِ وَالأَطْوَارِ.
He awakened those He chose from His creation, turning their hearts away from this world. He occupied them with awareness of Him, constant reflection, and persistent remembrance. He granted them the grace to strive in His obedience, to prepare for the eternal abode, to fear what displeases Him and leads to ruin, and to maintain this state through all changing circumstances.
أَحْمَدُهُ أَبْلَغَ حَمْدٍ وَأَرْكَاهُ، وَأَسْمَلَهُ وَأَنْمَاهُ.
I praise Him with the most eloquent, purest, most comprehensive, and most fruitful praise.
وَأَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ البَرُّ الكَرِيمُ، الرَّؤُوفُ الرَّحِيمُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ، وَحَبِيبُهُ وَخَلِيلُهُ، الهَادِي إِلَى صِرَاطٍ مُسْتَقِيمٍ، وَالدَّاعِي إِلَى دِينٍ قَوِيمٍ، صَلَوَاتُ اللهِ وَسَلَامُهُ عَلَيْهِ، وَعَلَى سَائِرِ النَّبِيِّينَ، وَآلِ كُلٍّ، وَسَائِرِ الصَّالِحِينَ.
I testify that there is no god but Allah, the Righteous, the Generous, the Kind, the Merciful. I testify that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, His beloved and intimate friend, the guide to the straight path and the caller to the upright religion. May the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, all the prophets, their families, and all the righteous.
أَمَّا بَعْدُ: فَقَدْ قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى: ﴿وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ مَا أُرِيدُ مِنْهُم مِّن رِّزْقٍ وَمَا أُرِيدُ أَن يُطْعِمُونِ﴾،
To proceed, Allah the Exalted says: 'I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me. I do not want from them any provision, nor do I want them to feed Me.'
وَهَذَا تَصْرِيحٌ بِأَنَّهُمْ خُلِقُوا لِلْعِبَادَةِ، فَحَقَّ عَلَيْهِمُ الِاعْتِنَاءُ بِمَا خُلِقُوا لَهُ وَالإِعْرَاضُ عَنْ حُظُوظِ الدُّنْيَا بِالزَّهَادَةِ، فَإِنَّهَا دَارُ نَفَادٍ لَا مَحَلُّ إِخْلَادٍ، وَمَرْكَبُ عُبُورٍ لَا مَنْزِلُ حُبُورٍ، وَمَشْرَعُ انْفِصَامٍ لَا مَوْطِنُ دَوَامٍ.
This is a clear declaration that they were created for worship. It is therefore incumbent upon them to focus on their purpose and to turn away from worldly desires through asceticism. This world is a place of passing, not a home of eternity; a bridge to cross, not a dwelling of joy; a place of departure, not a homeland of permanence.
فَلِهَذَا كَانَ الأَيْقَاظُ مِنْ أَهْلِهَا هُمُ العُبَّادَ، وَأَعْقَلُ النَّاسِ فِيهَا هُمُ الزُّهَّادَ.
Thus, the truly awake among its people are the worshippers, and the wisest of them are the ascetics.
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى: ﴿إِنَّمَا مَثَلُ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا كَمَاءٍ أَنزَلْنَاهُ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ فَاخْتَلَطَ بِهِ نَبَاتُ الْأَرْضِ مِمَّا يَأْكُلُ﴾.
Allah the Exalted says: 'The example of worldly life is like rain which We send down from the sky, causing the earth's vegetation to grow, from which people and livestock eat.'
