Line-by-line translation · المعاني
- الْمُبْتَدَأُ وَالْخَبَرُ
- (from previous page) ⟵ The evidence for this is his saying 'bi-amsihim wa-amsalamati', for he only intended 'bi-al-sahmi wa-al-salamati', so he used 'am' as a particle indicating the definite article like 'al', and this is the dialect of a group of Arabs, who are the Himyar; the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, spoke it in his saying: 'laysa min am-birri am-siyamu fi am-safari', meaning 'it is not righteousness to fast while traveling', and this Himyaritic 'am' indicates everything that the 'al' used by the majority of the Arabs indicates, without any difference in terms of meaning, the subject and the predicate.
- The evidence for this is your saying, 'I passed by Zayd, your companion.' Here, you describe a proper noun with a noun annexed to a pronoun. If it were at the rank of a pronoun, the adjective would be more definite than the noun it describes, which is impermissible according to the most correct view.
- بَابٌ : الْمُبْتَدَأُ وَالْخَبَرُ مَرْفُوعَانِ ، كَـ « اللَّهُ رَبُّنَا » وَ « مُحَمَّدٌ نَبِيُّنَا
- Chapter: The Subject and the Predicate are in the nominative case, as in 'Allah is our Lord' and 'Muhammad is our Prophet'.
