- Subul al-Salam: An Explanation of the Nullifiers of Islam.
- It must be done with sincerity to Him—Glory be to Him—out of desire for what He has, and out of reverence and fear of Him—Glory be to Him and Exalted is He—and furthermore, this worship must be in accordance with what His Prophet brought, in the case of Muhammad, and in the case of the past prophets; it must be likewise in the case of Noah, for worship of God alone must be in accordance with what Noah brought.
- He said: 'Worship is the unification of God and obedience to Him; it is Islam and faith; it is submission to the law of God; this is obedience to God; it is guidance; it is righteousness and piety; it is the worship for which you were created. It has been called Islam, it has been called faith, it has been called worship, it has been called obedience to God and His Messenger, and it has been called piety, righteousness, and guidance; the reality of the matter is that it is doing what God has commanded and leaving what God has forbidden.'
- He said: 'Some of the predecessors said: Whoever worships God through love, claiming that he only loves God, is a heretic; for how can he not fear God and not hope in Him?'
- And who is he to not fear God and not hope in Him?! God has said regarding the messengers—may God’s peace and blessings be upon them—: "Indeed, they used to hasten to good deeds and supplicate to Us in hope and fear."
- He did not say: 'They supplicate to Us out of love [only],' but rather said: 'And they supplicate to Us in hope and fear,' hope for Paradise and fear of the Fire...
- Thus, the messengers, the prophets, and the believers feared the punishment of God and hoped for His reward, and they loved Him with a sincere love that compelled them to obey Him and abandon disobedience to Him; it did not compel them to extremism, vanity, or arrogance; it compelled them to obedience to God, fear of Him, and desire for what He has. Worship is based on love, hope, and fear, not on arrogance, insolence, and looking down upon people.'
