Line-by-line translation ·
- These ignorant people admit that whoever denies the Resurrection has disbelieved and is to be killed, even if he says 'There is no god but Allah,' and that whoever rejects anything from the pillars of Islam has disbelieved and is to be killed, even if he says it; so how can it [the testimony] not benefit him if he rejects a branch of the branches [of religion], yet it benefits him if he rejects the Tawhid (monotheism) which is the foundation of the religion of the Messengers and its head?
- But the enemies of Allah did not understand the meaning of the hadiths: As for the hadith of Usama, he killed a man who claimed Islam because he thought that he only claimed Islam out of fear for his blood and his wealth, and when a man manifests Islam, it is obligatory to refrain from him until it becomes clear from him what contradicts that, and Allah the Exalted revealed regarding that: 'O you who have believed, when you go forth in the cause of Allah, investigate' [Surat an-Nisa, verse 94], meaning: verify. The verse indicates that it is obligatory to refrain from him and to verify, and if it becomes clear from him after that what contradicts Islam, he is to be killed, due to His saying, the Exalted: 'Investigate.' And if he were not to be killed [even] if he said it, there would be no meaning to the verification.
- His saying: 'And these ignorant people admit that whoever denies the Resurrection, etc.' This is a binding argument against these ignorant ones and a protest against them using what they themselves have said. For they have said that whoever denies the Resurrection is killed as a disbeliever, and they say that whoever rejects the obligation of anything from the pillars of Islam is judged to be a disbeliever and is killed, even if he says 'There is no god but Allah.' So how can one who rejects the Tawhid, which is the foundation of the religion, not be a disbeliever and not be killed, even if he says 'There is no god but Allah'?! Is this not more deserving of being declared a disbeliever than one who rejects the obligation of prayer or the obligation of zakat?! This is a correct binding argument from which there is no escape.
