Line-by-line translation · المعاني

حُرُوفُ الْجَرِّ كَمَا شَذَّ جَرُّ الْكَافِ لَهُ ، كَقَوْلِهِ : خَلَّى الذُّنَابَاتِ شِمَالاً كَثَبَا ... وَأُمَّ أَوْعَالٍ كَهَا أَوْ أَقْرَبَا
Prepositions behave as they do, though the genitive case of the 'Kaf' is irregular here, as in his verse: He left the Dhunabat to his left, nearby... and Umm Aw'al likewise, or closer.
He repaired and mended it. 'Washikan' means quickly. 'Ataban' here, with a kasra on the ta', is a quasi-adjective meaning 'added from his destruction'; with a fatha on the ta', it is a verbal noun meaning destruction, as noted in the Lisan under the entry for 'atab'.
الْمَعْنَى : رُبَّ شَخْصٍ ضَعِيفٍ أَشْفَى عَلَى الْهَلَاكِ وَالسُّقُوطِ ، فَجَبَرْتُ كَسْرَهُ وَرَشَشْتُ جَنَاحَهُ
The meaning is: Many a weak person has been on the verge of destruction and collapse, only for me to mend their fracture and strengthen their wing.
الْإِعْرَابُ : « وَهْـ » هُوَ عَلَى تَقْدِيرِ ( رُبَّ ) ، أَيْ رُبَّ وَاهٍ ؛ فَهُوَ مُبْتَدَأٌ مَرْفُوعٌ تَقْدِيرًا
Parsing: 'Wa-h' assumes the presence of 'rubba', meaning 'rubba wahin' (many a weak one); thus, it is a subject in the nominative case by estimation.
رَأَبْتُ » فِعْلٌ وَفَاعِلٌ ، وَالْجُمْلَةُ فِي مَحَلِّ رَفْعٍ خَبَرٌ
'Ra'abtu' is a verb and subject, and the clause functions as a nominative predicate.
وَشِيكًا » مَفْعُولٌ مُطْلَقٌ عَامِلُهُ رَأَبْتُ ، أَيْ رَأَبْتُ رَأْبًا وَشِيكًا ، أَيْ عَاجِلًا سَرِيعًا
'Washikan' is an absolute object governed by 'ra'abtu', meaning I mended it with a quick mending, or promptly and swiftly.
صَدْعَ » مَفْعُولٌ بِهِ لِرَأَبْتُ ، وَصَدْعُ مِنْ أَعْظَمِهِ ، مُضَافٌ إِلَيْهِ ، وَأَعْظَمُ مُضَافٌ ، وَالضَّمِيرُ مُضَافٌ إِلَيْهِ
'Sad'a' is the direct object of 'ra'abtu'. In the phrase 'sad'u min a'zamihi', 'sad'u' is in a genitive construction, as is 'a'zamu' with the pronoun.
وَرُبَّهُ عَطَبًا ، رُبَّ : حَرْفُ تَقْلِيلٍ وَجَرٍّ شَبِيهٌ بِالزَّائِدِ ، وَالضَّمِيرُ فِي مَحَلِّ جَرٍّ بِرُبَّ ، وَلَهُ مَحَلُّ رَفْعٍ بِالِابْتِدَاءِ
Regarding 'rubbahu ataban', 'rubba' is a particle of diminution and a preposition similar to the extra particle. The pronoun is in the genitive position due to 'rubba', while also occupying a nominative position as a subject.
وَعَطَبًا ، تَمْيِيزٌ لِلضَّمِيرِ
'Ataban' acts as a specifier for the pronoun.
أَنْقَذْتُ » فِعْلٌ وَفَاعِلٌ ، وَالْجُمْلَةُ فِي مَحَلِّ رَفْعٍ خَبَرُ الْمُبْتَدَإِ الَّذِي هُوَ مَجْرُورٌ لَفْظًا بِرُبَّ
'Anqadhtu' is a verb and subject, and the clause is a nominative predicate for the subject that is genitive in form due to 'rubba'.
مِنْ عَطَبِهِ » الْجَارُّ وَالْمَجْرُورُ مُتَعَلِّقٌ بِأَنْقَذَ ، وَعَطَبٌ مُضَافٌ وَالضَّمِيرُ مُضَافٌ إِلَيْهِ
'Min atabihi' contains a preposition and noun phrase related to 'anqadha', where 'atab' is in a genitive construction with the pronoun.
وَأَعْظَمُ . الشَّاهِدُ فِيهِ : قَوْلُهُ « وَرُبَّهُ عَطَبًا » ، حَيْثُ جَرَّ « رُبَّ » الضَّمِيرَ ، وَهُوَ شَاذٌّ
The evidence here is the phrase 'wa-rubbahu ataban', where 'rubba' takes a pronoun as its genitive object, which is irregular.
وَاعْلَمْ أَنَّ الْعُلَمَاءَ قَدِ اخْتَلَفُوا فِي هَذَا الضَّمِيرِ الَّذِي تَدْخُلُ عَلَيْهِ رُبَّ ، أَمَعْرِفَةٌ هُوَ أَمْ نَكِرَةٌ
Scholars have differed over this pronoun governed by 'rubba': is it definite or indefinite?
The majority maintain it is definite by nature, while Ibn Usfur and Jar Allah al-Zamakhshari argue it is indefinite, as it occupies the position of a noun that must be indefinite; 'rubba' only governs indefinite nouns, and its referent, the specifier, must also be indefinite.
الْبَيْتُ لِلْعَجَّاجِ يَصِفُ حِمَارَ وَحْشٍ وَأُتُنَهُ ، وَقَدْ أَرَادَ هَذَا الْحِمَارُ وُرُودَ الْمَاءِ مَعَهُنَّ ، فَرَأَى الصَّيَّادَ ، فَهَرَبَ بِهِنَّ
The verse by al-Ajjaj describes a wild donkey and his herd. The donkey intended to reach the water with them, but upon spotting a hunter, he fled with them.
اللُّغَةُ : « الذُّنَابَاتُ » جَمْعُ ذُنَابَةٍ - بِالْكَسْرِ - وَهِيَ آخِرُ الْوَادِي الَّذِي يَنْتَهِي إِلَيْهِ السَّيْلُ ، وَقَدْ قِيلَ : إِنَّهُ بِفَتْحِ الذَّالِ اسْمُ مَكَانٍ بِعَيْنِهِ
Language: 'Al-Dhunabat' is the plural of 'dhunaba' (with a kasra), referring to the end of a valley where a flood terminates. Some say it is a specific place name, pronounced with a fatha on the dhal.
كَثَبًا ، أَيْ قَرِيبًا
'Kathaban' means nearby.
أُمُّ أَوْعَالٍ ، هِيَ هَضْبَةٌ فِي دِيَارِ بَنِي تَمِيمٍ
'Umm Aw'al' is a plateau located in the lands of Banu Tamim.
The meaning is that in his flight, he kept the Dhunabat to his left, nearby, and kept Umm Aw'al to his right, at a similar or closer distance.
