Line-by-line translation · المعاني
- شَرْحُ ابْنِ عَقِيلٍ : الْجُزْءُ الثَّانِي
- Ibn Aqil’s Commentary: Volume Two.
- الثَّانِي : النَّصْبُ عَطْفاً عَلَى مَحَلِّ اسْمِ «لا» وَتَكُونُ «لا» الثَّانِيَةُ زَائِدَةً بَيْنَ الْعَاطِفِ وَالْمَعْطُوفِ ، نَحْوَ : «لا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةً إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ» وَمِنْهُ قَوْلُهُ
- Second: The accusative case (nasb) used as a conjunction to the position of the noun governed by 'la'. Here, the second 'la' is redundant, appearing between the conjunction and the conjoined noun, as in the phrase: 'la hawla wa la quwwatan illa billah' (there is no power and no strength except by God). This is exemplified by the following verse:
- لَا نَسَبَ الْيَوْمَ وَلَا خُلَّةٌ اتَّسَعَ الْخَرْقُ عَلَى الرَّاقِعِ
- 110 - No lineage today, nor any friendship; the tear has grown too wide for the patcher.
- 110 - This verse is attributed to Anas ibn al-Abbas ibn Mirdas, though some say it belongs to Abu Amir, grandfather of al-Abbas ibn Mirdas. The second hemistich is narrated as the learned commentator recorded it, ending in the letter 'ayn', followed by:
- كَالثَّوْبِ إِذْ أَنْهَجَ فِيهِ الْبِلَى أَعْيَا عَلَى ذِي الْحِيلَةِ الصَّانِعِ
- Like a garment worn thin by decay, baffling the clever craftsman.
- وَرَوَى أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الْقَالِي صَدْرَ هَذَا الْبَيْتِ مَعَ عَجُزٍ آخَرَ ، وَهُوَ : مِنْ كَلِمَةٍ قَافِيَةٍ ، وَقَبْلَهُ : اتَّسَعَ الْخَرْقُ عَلَى الرَّاتِقِ
- Abu Ali al-Qali narrated the first hemistich of this verse with a different second hemistich ending in the letter 'qaf', preceded by: The tear has grown too wide for the mender.
- لَا صُلْحَ بَيْنِي - فَاعْلَمُوهُ - وَلَا بَيْنَكُمُ ، مَا حَمَلَتْ عَاتِقِي سَيْفِي ، وَمَا كُنَّا بِنَجْدٍ ، وَمَا قَرْقَرَ قُمْرُ الْوَادِي بِالشَّاهِقِ
- There is no reconciliation between me—know this—and you, as long as my shoulder bears my sword, as long as we remain in Najd, and as long as the turtledove of the valley coos upon the high peak.
- Language: 'Khullah' (with a damma on the kha and a shadda on the lam) denotes friendship. It may also refer to the friend himself, as seen in the words of a poet from the tribe of Banu Abd al-Qays, one of the poets of the Hamasa:
- أَلَا أَبْلِغَا خُلَّتِي رَاشِداً وَصِنْوِي قَدِيماً إِذَا مَا تَصِلْ
- Convey this to my friend Rashid and my lifelong companion, if you reach him.
- الرَّاقِعُ ، وَمِثْلُهُ «الرَّاتِقُ» ، الَّذِي يُصْلِحُ مَوْضِعَ الْفَسَادِ مِنَ الثَّوْبِ «أَنْهَجَ» ، أَخَذَ فِي الْبِلَى
- 'Al-raqi' (the patcher), like 'al-ratiq' (the mender), is one who repairs a damaged garment. 'Anhaja' means it has begun to wear out.
- 'A'ya' means it became difficult, arduous, and intense. 'Al-atiq' is the part of the shoulder where the cloak rests. 'Qarqara qumr' refers to the cooing or calling of the bird. 'Qumr' may be the plural of 'aqmar', following the pattern of 'ahmar' and 'humr' or 'asfar' and 'sufr'. Alternatively, it may be the plural of 'qamar', similar to 'rum' for 'rumi'. 'Al-shahiq' refers to a high mountain.
- Parsing: 'La' is a negator of the genus. 'Nasab' is its noun, built on the fatha in the accusative position. 'Al-yawm' is an adverb related to a deleted predicate of 'la'. The 'waw' is a conjunction, and the second 'la' is redundant for emphasis. 'Khullah' is conjoined to 'nasab', reflecting the accusative position of the noun governed by 'la'. 'Ittasa'a' is a past tense verb.
- الْخَرْقُ ، فَاعِلٌ لِاتَّسَعَ عَلَى الرَّاقِعِ جَارٌّ وَمَجْرُورٌ مُتَعَلِّقٌ بِقَوْلِهِ «اتَّسَعَ»
- 'Al-kharq' is the subject of 'ittasa'a'. 'Ala al-raqi' is a prepositional phrase related to the verb 'ittasa'a'.
