- (from previous page) ⟵ The author—may Allah have mercy on him—indicated by his saying 'and the like of these two' the likes of 'Amir, which is every proper noun that meets the previously mentioned conditions, such as Muhammad and Ibrahim; so you say: Muhammadun and Ibrahimun, and the likes of Mudhnib, which is every adjective that meets the conditions, such as al-Afdal and al-Darrab and the like, so you say: al-Afdalun and al-Darrabun, and he indicated by his saying 'and with it twenty' that which is appended to the sound masculine plural in its inflection: with the waw in the nominative case, and with the ya in the genitive and accusative cases.
- The sound masculine plural is: that in which the structure of the singular remains intact, and in which the conditions previously mentioned are found; so whatever has no singular from its own wording, or has a singular that does not fulfill the conditions, is not a sound masculine plural, but rather it is attached to it; so 'Ishrun and its category - which is thirty to ninety - is attached to the sound masculine plural; because it has no singular from its own wording; since it is not said: 'ishr, and likewise 'Ahlun is attached to it; because its singular - which is ahl - does not have the mentioned conditions; because it is a rigid generic noun like rajul, and likewise 'ulu; because it has no singular from its own wording, and 'alamun is the plural of 'alam, and 'alam is like rajul, a rigid generic noun, and 'Illiyyun: is a name for the highest part of Paradise, and it does not have the mentioned conditions; because it is for that which does not possess intellect, and 'aradun: is the plural of 'ard, and 'ard: is a feminine rigid generic noun; and al-sunun: is the plural of sanah, and al-sanah: is a feminine generic noun; so all of these are attached to the masculine plural; because of what preceded regarding them not fulfilling the conditions.
- This category (which is the category of sinin) may occur inflected with apparent vowels on the nun while maintaining the ya, like the inflection of 'hin': with the damma in the nominative, the fatha in the accusative, and the kasra in the genitive, and inflection with apparent vowels on the nun while maintaining the ya is consistent in all masculine plurals and what is attached to it according to some grammarians or some Arabs.
