بَابُ الْبَدَلِ: إِذَا أُبْدِلَ اسْمٌ مِنَ اسْمٍ، أَوْ فِعْلٌ مِنْ فِعْلٍ، تَبِعَهُ فِي جَمِيعِ إِعْرَابِهِ. وَهُوَ عَلَى أَرْبَعَةِ أَقْسَامٍ: بَدَلُ الشَّيْءِ مِنَ الشَّيْءِ، وَبَدَلُ الْبَعْضِ مِنَ الْكُلِّ، وَبَدَلُ الاشْتِمَالِ، وَبَدَلُ الْغَلَطِ. تَقُولُ: جَاءَ زَيْدٌ أَخُوكَ، وَأَكَلْتُ الرَّغِيفَ ثُلُثَهُ، وَنَفَعَنِي زَيْدٌ عِلْمُهُ، وَرَأَيْتُ زَيْدًا الْفَرَسَ، أَرَدْتَ أَنْ تَقُولَ: رَأَيْتُ الْفَرَسَ، فَغَلِطْتَ، فَأَبْدَلْتَ زَيْدًا مِنْهُ. بَابُ مَنْصُوبَاتِ الْأَسْمَاءِ: الْمَنْصُوبَاتُ خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ؛ وَهِيَ: الْمَفْعُولُ بِهِ، وَالْمَصْدَرُ، وَظَرْفُ الزَّمَانِ، وَظَرْفُ الْمَكَانِ، وَالْحَالُ، وَالتَّمْيِيزُ، وَالْمُسْتَثْنَى، وَاسْمُ لَا، وَالْمُنَادَى، وَالْمَفْعُولُ مِنْ أَجْلِهِ، وَالْمَفْعُولُ مَعَهُ، وَخَبَرُ كَانَ وَأَخَوَاتِهَا، وَاسْمُ إِنَّ وَأَخَوَاتِهَا؛ وَالتَّابِعُ لِلْمَنْصُوبِ، وَهُوَ أَرْبَعَةُ أَشْيَاءَ: النَّعْتُ، وَالْعَطْفُ، وَالتَّوْكِيدُ، وَالْبَدَلُ.

إِذَا أُبْدِلَ اسْمٌ مِنَ اسْمٍ، أَوْ فِعْلٌ مِنْ فِعْلٍ، تَبِعَهُ فِي جَمِيعِ إِعْرَابِهِ.
When a noun replaces another noun, or a verb replaces a verb, the replacement follows the original in all its grammatical inflections.
وَهُوَ عَلَى أَرْبَعَةِ أَقْسَامٍ: بَدَلُ الشَّيْءِ مِنَ الشَّيْءِ، وَبَدَلُ الْبَعْضِ مِنَ الْكُلِّ، وَبَدَلُ الاشْتِمَالِ، وَبَدَلُ الْغَلَطِ.
There are four categories of substitution: equivalent substitution, part-for-whole substitution, substitution of inclusion, and corrective substitution.
تَقُولُ: جَاءَ زَيْدٌ أَخُوكَ، وَأَكَلْتُ الرَّغِيفَ ثُلُثَهُ، وَنَفَعَنِي زَيْدٌ عِلْمُهُ، وَرَأَيْتُ زَيْدًا الْفَرَسَ، أَرَدْتَ أَنْ تَقُولَ: رَأَيْتُ الْفَرَسَ، فَغَلِطْتَ، فَأَبْدَلْتَ زَيْدًا مِنْهُ.
Examples include: 'Zayd, your brother, came'; 'I ate a third of the loaf'; 'Zayd benefited me with his knowledge'; and 'I saw Zayd—the horse.' In the last case, you intended to say 'I saw the horse' but misspoke, so you substituted Zayd for it.
