Line-by-line translation · المعاني
- شَرْحُ الْآجُرُّومِيَّةِ.
- A commentary on the Ajurrumiyya.
- كَلَامٌ مُفِيدٌ، مَعَ أَنَّ هَذَا تَحْصِيلُ حَاصِلٍ.
- Beneficial speech, though this is stating the obvious.
- إِذَا كَانَ الْمَاءُ حَوْلَكُمْ فَأَنْتُمْ جُلُوسٌ حَوْلَ الْمَاءِ.
- If water is around you, you are sitting around the water.
- قَوْلُهُ: «بِالْوَضْعِ».
- Regarding his phrase: 'by convention'.
- مُرَادُهُ بِالْوَضْعِ أَمْرَانِ:
- He intends two things by convention:
- الْأَوَّلُ: أَنْ يَكُونَ الْوَاضِعُ لَهُ قَاصِدًا وَضْعَهُ، فَخَرَجَ بِذَلِكَ كَلَامُ السَّكْرَانِ وَالْمَجْنُونِ وَالنَّائِمِ وَالْهَاذِي هَذَا لَا يُسَمَّى كَلَامًا؛ لِأَنَّ وَاضِعَهُ لَيْسَ قَاصِدًا لَهُ.
- First, that the speaker intends the meaning; this excludes the utterances of the intoxicated, the insane, the sleeper, and the delirious. These are not considered speech because the speaker lacks intent.
- Second, that it follows Arabic convention. If we encounter a statement that provides complete information—leaving the listener with nothing further to ask—but Arabs do not understand it, it is not considered speech. It must conform to the Arabic language, otherwise, grammarians do not classify it as speech.
- إِذَنِ الْقُيُودُ أَرْبَعَةٌ؟ اللَّفْظُ الْمُرَكَّبُ، الْمُفِيدُ، بِالْوَضْعِ، لَا يَكُونُ الْكَلَامُ كَلَامًا إِلَّا بِهَذِهِ الْقُيُودِ الْأَرْبَعَةِ.
- So, there are four conditions: utterance, composition, benefit, and convention. Speech is not speech unless it meets all four.
- إِذَا قَالَ قَائِلٌ: بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ هَلْ هَذَا كَلَامٌ أَمْ غَيْرُ كَلَامٍ؟
- If someone says, 'In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful,' is this speech or not?
- كَلَامٌ هَلْ هُوَ مُرَكَّبٌ مِنْ كَلِمَتَيْنِ فَأَكْثَرَ حَقِيقَةً أَوْ تَقْدِيرًا؟
- It is speech. Is it composed of two or more words, either explicitly or implicitly?
- تَقْدِيرًا؛ لِأَنَّ التَّقْدِيرَ: «بِسْمِ اللَّهِ أَقْرَأُ».
- Implicitly, because the underlying meaning is, 'In the name of Allah, I read.'
- لَوْ لَمْ تُقَدِّرْ «أَقْرَأُ» مَا صَارَ كَلَامًا.
- Without the implied 'I read,' it would not be speech.
- Likewise, if you say, 'The capable, skilled, understanding man,' you have provided many descriptions, yet this is not speech because it lacks a complete thought; the listener is still waiting for more information.
