إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَا نُوحًا إِلَى قَوْمِهِ أَنْ أَنذِرْ قَوْمَكَ مِن قَبْلِ أَن يَأْتِيَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ قَالَ يَقَوْمِ إِنِّي لَكُمْ نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينُ ( أَنِ اعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ وَاتَقُوهُ وَأَطِيعُونِ (۳) يَغْفِرْ لَكُم مِّن ذُنُوبِكُمْ وَيُؤَخِّرَكُمْ إِلَى أَجَلٍ مُسَمَّى إِنَّ أَجَلَ اللَّهِ إِذَا جَاءَ لَا يُؤَخِّرُ لَوْ كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّي دَعَوْتُ قَوْمِي لَيْلًا وَنَهَارًا (٥) فَلَمْ يَزِدْهُمْ دُعَاءِى إِلَّا فِرَارًا وَإِنِّي اسْتَغْشَوا: غَطَّوا كُلَّمَا دَعَوْتُهُمْ لِتَغْفِرَ لَهُمْ جَعَلُوا أَصَبْعَهُمْ فِي عَاذَانِهِمْ وَاسْتَغْشَوا ثِيَابَهُمْ وَأَصَرُّوا وَاسْتَكْبَرُوا اسْتِكْبَارًا ) ثُمَّ إِنِّي دَعَوْتُهُمْ جِهَارًا ثُمَّ إِنِّي أَعْلَنَتُ لَهُمْ وَأَسْرَرْتُ لَهُمْ إِسْرَارًا فَقُلْتُ اسْتَغْفِرُواْ مدراراً غزيراً متتابعاً . رَبَّكُمْ إِنَّهُ كَانَ غَفَّارًا يُرْسِلِ السَّمَاءَ عَلَيْكُم مِّدْرَارًا ) وَيُمْدِ ذكر بِأَمْوَلٍ وَبَنِينَ وَيَجْعَل لَّكُمْ جَنَّتٍ وَيَجْعَل لَكُمْ أَنْهَرا لا مَا لَكُمْ لَا نَرْجُونَ لِلَّهِ وَقَارًا وَقَدْ خَلَقَكُمْ أَطْوَارًا ) أَلَمْ تَرَوْا كَيْفَ خَلَقَ اللهُ سَبْعَ سَمَوَاتٍ طِبَاقًا (٥) وَجَعَلَ الْقَمَرَ فِيهِنَّ نُورًا وَجَعَلَ الشَّمْسَ سِرَاجًا (٣) وَقاراً : تَوْقِيراً وَتَعْظيماً. أَطْواراً: جَمْعُ طَوْرٍ، وَهِيَ الأحوال. طباقاً : سَماءً فَوْقَ سَماءٍ. وَاللَّهُ أَنْبَتَكُم مِّنَ الْأَرْضِ نَبَاتا ) ثُمَّ يُعِيدُكُمْ فِيهَا وَيُخْرِجُكُمْ إِخْرَاجًا وَاللهُ جَعَلَ لَكُمُ الْأَرْضَ بِسَاطًا لِتَسْلُكُوا مِنْهَا سُبُلًا فِجَاجًا فجاجاً: جَمْعُ فَجٍّ، وَهُوَ ةٌ، وَهُوَ ٢٠ قَالَ نُوحٌ رَبِّ إِنَّهُمْ عَصَونِي وَاتَّبَعُوا مَن لَّمْ يَزِدْهُ مَالُهُ وَوَلَدُهُ إِلَّا الطريق الواسع. خَسَارًا ٥ وَمَكَرُوا مَكْرًا كُبَارًا ) وَقَالُوا لَا تَذَرُنَّ وَالِهَتَكُمْ وَلَا كباراً : شَديداً، عَظيماً. وَداً، وَسُواعاً، وَيَعُوثَ، نَذَرُنَّ وَذَا وَلَا سُوَاعًا وَلَا يَغُوثَ وَيَعُوقَ وَنَسْرًا ) وَقَدْ أَضَلُّوا كَثِيرًا وَيَعوقَ، وَنَسْراً: أَصْناماً عَبَدَها الكفّارُ. وَلَا تَزِدِ الظَّالِمِينَ إِلَّا ضَلَلًا مِّمَّا خَطِيئَنِهِمْ أُغْرِقُوا فَأَدْخِلُوا نَارًا

Line-by-line translation · المعاني

إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَا نُوحًا إِلَى قَوْمِهِ أَنْ أَنذِرْ قَوْمَكَ مِن قَبْلِ أَن يَأْتِيَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ
Indeed, We sent Noah to his people, [saying], "Warn your people before there comes to them a painful punishment."
قَالَ يَقَوْمِ إِنِّي لَكُمْ نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينُ (
He said, "O my people, indeed I am to you a clear warner,
أَنِ اعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ وَاتَقُوهُ وَأَطِيعُونِ (۳)
[Saying], 'Worship Allah, fear Him and obey me.
يَغْفِرْ لَكُم مِّن ذُنُوبِكُمْ وَيُؤَخِّرَكُمْ إِلَى أَجَلٍ مُّسَمَّى
He will forgive your sins and grant you respite for a specified term.
إِنَّ أَجَلَ اللَّهِ إِذَا جَاءَ لَا يُؤَخِّرُ لَوْ كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ
Indeed, when the time decreed by Allah comes, it cannot be delayed, if you only knew.
قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّي دَعَوْتُ قَوْمِي لَيْلًا وَنَهَارًا (٥)
He said, "My Lord, indeed I invited my people [to truth] night and day.
فَلَمْ يَزِدْهُمْ دُعَاءِى إِلَّا فِرَارًا
But my invitation only made them flee further away.
وَإِنِّي اسْتَغْشَوا: غَطَّوا
The term 'istaghshaw' means: they covered themselves.
كُلَّمَا دَعَوْتُهُمْ لِتَغْفِرَ لَهُمْ جَعَلُوا أَصَبْعَهُمْ فِي عَاذَانِهِمْ وَاسْتَغْشَوا ثِيَابَهُمْ وَأَصَرُّوا وَاسْتَكْبَرُوا اسْتِكْبَارًا )
Every time I invited them so that You might forgive them, they put their fingers in their ears, covered themselves with their garments, persisted in their ways, and grew exceedingly arrogant.
ثُمَّ إِنِّي دَعَوْتُهُمْ جِهَارًا
Then I invited them publicly.
ثُمَّ إِنِّي أَعْلَنَتُ لَهُمْ وَأَسْرَرْتُ لَهُمْ إِسْرَارًا
Then I announced to them and [also] confided to them secretly
فَقُلْتُ اسْتَغْفِرُواْ رَبَّكُمْ إِنَّهُ كَانَ غَفَّارًا
And said, 'Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver.
مدراراً غزيراً متتابعاً .
'Midraran' means: abundant and continuous.
يُرْسِلِ السَّمَاءَ عَلَيْكُم مِّدْرَارًا ) وَيُمْدِ ذكر
He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in [continuing] showers
وَيُمْدِدْكُم بِأَمْوَلٍ وَبَنِينَ وَيَجْعَل لَّكُمْ جَنَّتٍ وَيَجْعَل لَّكُمْ أَنْهَرا
He will increase your wealth and children, provide you with gardens, and provide you with rivers.
مَا لَكُمْ لَا تَرْجُونَ لِلَّهِ وَقَارًا
What is wrong with you that you do not show Allah proper reverence?
وَقَدْ خَلَقَكُمْ أَطْوَارًا )
While He has created you in stages?
أَلَمْ تَرَوْا كَيْفَ خَلَقَ اللهُ سَبْعَ سَمَوَاتٍ طِبَاقًا (٥)
Do you not consider how Allah has created seven heavens in layers
وَجَعَلَ الْقَمَرَ فِيهِنَّ نُورًا وَجَعَلَ الشَّمْسَ سِرَاجًا (٣)
And made the moon therein a [reflected] light and made the sun a burning lamp?
وَقاراً : تَوْقِيراً وَتَعْظيماً.
'Waqaran' means: reverence and glorification.
أَطْواراً: جَمْعُ طَوْرٍ، وَهِيَ الأحوال.
'Atwaran' is the plural of 'tawr', meaning: states.
طباقاً : سَماءً فَوْقَ سَماءٍ.
'Tibaqan' means: one heaven above another.
وَاللَّهُ أَنْبَتَكُم مِّنَ الْأَرْضِ نَبَاتا )
And Allah has caused you to grow from the earth a [progressive] growth.
ثُمَّ يُعِيدُكُمْ فِيهَا وَيُخْرِجُكُمْ إِخْرَاجًا
Then He will return you into it and extract you [another] extraction.
وَاللهُ جَعَلَ لَكُمُ الْأَرْضَ بِسَاطًا
And Allah has made for you the earth an expanse
لِتَسْلُكُوا مِنْهَا سُبُلًا فِجَاجًا
That you may follow therein roads of passage.' "
فجاجاً: جَمْعُ فَجٍّ، وَهُوَ الطريق الواسع.
'Fijajan' is the plural of 'fajj', meaning: a wide path.
قَالَ نُوحٌ رَبِّ إِنَّهُمْ عَصَونِي وَاتَّبَعُوا مَن لَّمْ يَزِدْهُ مَالُهُ وَوَلَدُهُ إِلَّا خَسَارًا
Noah said, "My Lord, indeed they have disobeyed me and followed him whose wealth and children will not increase him except in loss.
وَمَكَرُوا مَكْرًا كُبَارًا )
And they conspired an immense conspiracy.
وَقَالُوا لَا تَذَرُنَّ وَالِهَتَكُمْ وَلَا تَذَرُنَّ وَدًّا وَلَا سُوَاعًا وَلَا يَغُوثَ وَيَعُوقَ وَنَسْرًا
And said, 'Never leave your gods and never leave Wadd or Suwa' or Yaghuth and Ya'uq and Nasr.
كباراً : شَديداً، عَظيماً.
'Kubaran' means: severe, great.
وَداً، وَسُواعاً، وَيَعُوثَ، وَيَعوقَ، وَنَسْراً: أَصْناماً عَبَدَها الكفّارُ.
Wadd, Suwa', Yaghuth, Ya'uq, and Nasr were idols worshipped by the disbelievers.
وَقَدْ أَضَلُّوا كَثِيرًا وَلَا تَزِدِ الظَّالِمِينَ إِلَّا ضَلَلًا
And already they have misled many. And, [my Lord], do not increase the wrongdoers except in error."
مِّمَّا خَطِيئَنِهِمْ أُغْرِقُوا فَأَدْخِلُوا نَارًا
Because of their sins they were drowned and put into the Fire, and they found none besides Allah to help them. ⟶ (sentence continues on next page)
