إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَا نُوحًا إِلَى قَوْمِهِ أَنْ أَنذِرْ قَوْمَكَ مِن قَبْلِ أَن يَأْتِيَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ

We sent Noah to his people, saying, 'Warn your people before a painful punishment comes upon them.'

قَالَ يَقَوْمِ إِنِّي لَكُمْ نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينُ

He said, 'My people, I am a clear warner to you.'

أَنِ اعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ وَاتَقُوهُ وَأَطِيعُونِ

Worship Allah, fear Him, and obey me.

يَغْفِرْ لَكُم مِّن ذُنُوبِكُمْ وَيُؤَخِّرَكُمْ إِلَى أَجَلٍ مُّسَمَّى

He will forgive your sins and grant you respite for a specified term.

إِنَّ أَجَلَ اللَّهِ إِذَا جَاءَ لَا يُؤَخِّرُ لَوْ كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ

Indeed, when the time decreed by Allah comes, it cannot be delayed, if you only knew.

قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّي دَعَوْتُ قَوْمِي لَيْلًا وَنَهَارًا

He said, 'My Lord, I have invited my people night and day.'

فَلَمْ يَزِدْهُمْ دُعَاءِى إِلَّا فِرَارًا

But my invitation only made them flee further away.

وَإِنِّي اسْتَغْشَوا: غَطَّوا

The term 'istaghshaw' means: they covered themselves.

كُلَّمَا دَعَوْتُهُمْ لِتَغْفِرَ لَهُمْ جَعَلُوا أَصَبْعَهُمْ فِي عَاذَانِهِمْ وَاسْتَغْشَوا ثِيَابَهُمْ وَأَصَرُّوا وَاسْتَكْبَرُوا اسْتِكْبَارًا

Every time I invited them so that You might forgive them, they put their fingers in their ears, covered themselves with their garments, persisted in their ways, and grew exceedingly arrogant.

ثُمَّ إِنِّي دَعَوْتُهُمْ جِهَارًا

Then I invited them openly.

ثُمَّ إِنِّي أَعْلَنَتُ لَهُمْ وَأَسْرَرْتُ لَهُمْ إِسْرَارًا

Then I announced to them and spoke to them in private.

فَقُلْتُ اسْتَغْفِرُواْ رَبَّكُمْ إِنَّهُ كَانَ غَفَّارًا

I said, 'Ask your Lord for forgiveness, for He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver.'

مدراراً غزيراً متتابعاً .

'Midraran' means: abundant and continuous.

يُرْسِلِ السَّمَاءَ عَلَيْكُم مِّدْرَارًا

He will send down rain upon you in continuing showers.

وَيُمْدِدْكُم بِأَمْوَلٍ وَبَنِينَ وَيَجْعَل لَّكُمْ جَنَّتٍ وَيَجْعَل لَّكُمْ أَنْهَرا

He will increase your wealth and children, provide you with gardens, and provide you with rivers.

مَا لَكُمْ لَا تَرْجُونَ لِلَّهِ وَقَارًا

What is wrong with you that you do not show Allah proper reverence?

وَقَدْ خَلَقَكُمْ أَطْوَارًا

When He has created you in stages?

أَلَمْ تَرَوْا كَيْفَ خَلَقَ اللهُ سَبْعَ سَمَوَاتٍ طِبَاقًا

Do you not see how Allah created seven heavens in layers?

وَجَعَلَ الْقَمَرَ فِيهِنَّ نُورًا وَجَعَلَ الشَّمْسَ سِرَاجًا

He placed the moon in them as a reflected light and made the sun a burning lamp.

وَقاراً : تَوْقِيراً وَتَعْظيماً.

'Waqaran' means: reverence and glorification.

أَطْواراً: جَمْعُ طَوْرٍ، وَهِيَ الأحوال.

'Atwaran' is the plural of 'tawr', meaning: states.

طباقاً : سَماءً فَوْقَ سَماءٍ.

'Tibaqan' means: one heaven above another.

وَاللَّهُ أَنْبَتَكُم مِّنَ الْأَرْضِ نَبَاتا

Allah caused you to grow from the earth like a plant.

ثُمَّ يُعِيدُكُمْ فِيهَا وَيُخْرِجُكُمْ إِخْرَاجًا

Then He will return you into it and bring you out again.

وَاللهُ جَعَلَ لَكُمُ الْأَرْضَ بِسَاطًا

Allah has made the earth a vast expanse for you.

لِتَسْلُكُوا مِنْهَا سُبُلًا فِجَاجًا

So that you may travel its wide paths.

فجاجاً: جَمْعُ فَجٍّ، وَهُوَ الطريق الواسع.

'Fijajan' is the plural of 'fajj', meaning: a wide path.

قَالَ نُوحٌ رَبِّ إِنَّهُمْ عَصَونِي وَاتَّبَعُوا مَن لَّمْ يَزِدْهُ مَالُهُ وَوَلَدُهُ إِلَّا خَسَارًا

Noah said, 'My Lord, they have disobeyed me and followed those whose wealth and children only bring them loss.'

وَمَكَرُوا مَكْرًا كُبَارًا

They plotted a massive conspiracy.

وَقَالُوا لَا تَذَرُنَّ وَالِهَتَكُمْ وَلَا تَذَرُنَّ وَدًّا وَلَا سُوَاعًا وَلَا يَغُوثَ وَيَعُوقَ وَنَسْرًا

They said, 'Do not forsake your gods; do not forsake Wadd, Suwa', Yaghuth, Ya'uq, or Nasr.'

كباراً : شَديداً، عَظيماً.

'Kubaran' means: severe, great.

وَداً، وَسُواعاً، وَيَعُوثَ، وَيَعوقَ، وَنَسْراً: أَصْناماً عَبَدَها الكفّارُ.

Wadd, Suwa', Yaghuth, Ya'uq, and Nasr were idols worshipped by the disbelievers.

وَقَدْ أَضَلُّوا كَثِيرًا وَلَا تَزِدِ الظَّالِمِينَ إِلَّا ضَلَلًا

They have misled many; do not increase the wrongdoers in anything but error.

مِّمَّا خَطِيئَنِهِمْ أُغْرِقُوا فَأَدْخِلُوا نَارًا

Because of their sins, they were drowned and cast into the Fire.
