مِنْ أَجْلِ الطُّفُولَةِ.

For the sake of childhood.

وَسِيمًا مِنَ الأَطْفَالِ لَوْلَاهُ لَمْ أَخَفْ عَلَى الشَّيْبِ أَنْ أَنْأَى وَأَنْ أَتَغَرَّبَا.

A handsome child; were it not for him, I would not have feared, in my old age, to distance myself and become a stranger.

تَوَدُّ النُّجُومُ الزُّهْرُ لَوْ أَنَّهَا دُمًى لِيَخْتَارَ مِنْهَا المُتْرَفَاتِ وَيَلْعَبَا.

The bright stars wish they were dolls, so he could choose the finest among them and play.

وَعِنْدِي كُنُوزٌ مِنْ حَنَانٍ وَرَحْمَةٍ نَعِيمِي أَنْ يُغْرَى بِهِنَّ وَيَنْهَبَا.

I possess treasures of tenderness and mercy; my joy is for him to be tempted by them and plunder them.

نَاغَى: كَرَّرَ مَقَاطِعَ وَأَصْوَاتًا مُحَبَّبَةً.

Nagha: To repeat syllables and endearing sounds.

يَجُورُ وَبَعْضُ الجَوْرِ حُلْوٌ مُحَبَّبٌ وَلَمْ أَرَ قَبْلَ الطِّفْلِ ظُلْمًا مُحَبَّبَا.

He acts unjustly, yet some injustice is sweet and endearing; I have never seen, before this child, an endearing injustice.

وَيَغْضَبُ أَحْيَانًا وَيَرْضَى وَحَسْبُنَا مِنَ الصَّفْوِ أَنْ يَرْضَى عَلَيْنَا وَيَغْضَبَا.

He gets angry sometimes and becomes pleased, and it is enough for us of serenity that he is pleased with us and gets angry.

وَإِنْ نَالَهُ سَقَمٌ تَمَنَّيْتُ أَنَّنِي فِدَاءٌ لَهُ كُنْتُ السَّقِيمَ المُعَذَّبَا.

If illness befalls him, I wish that I were a sacrifice for him, that I were the sick and tormented one.

يَرِفُّ لَنَا الأَعْيَادُ عِيدًا إِذَا خَطَا وَعِيدًا إِذَا نَاغَى وَعِيدًا إِذَا حَبَا.

Holidays flutter for us: a holiday when he takes a step, a holiday when he coos, and a holiday when he crawls.

كَرُغْبِ القَطَا لَوْ أَنَّهُ رَاحَ صَادِيًا سَكَبْتُ لَهُ عَيْنِي وَقَلْبِي لِيَشْرَبَا.

Like the desire of the sandgrouse, if he were to go thirsty, I would pour out my eyes and my heart for him to drink.

وَأُوثِرُ أَنْ يَرْوَى وَيَشْبَعَ نَاعِمًا وَأَظْمَأُ فِي النُّعْمَى عَلَيْهِ وَأَسْغَبَا.

I prefer that he be quenched and satisfied in comfort, while I remain thirsty and hungry in his grace.

يَنَامُ عَلَى أَشْوَاقِ قَلْبِي بِمَهْدِهِ حَرِيرًا مِنَ الوَشْيِ اليَمَانِيِّ مُذَهَّبَا.

He sleeps upon the longings of my heart in his cradle, like silk of gilded Yemeni embroidery.

وَأُسْدِلُ أَجْفَانِي غِطَاءً يُظِلُّهُ وَيَا لَيْتَهَا كَانَتْ أَحَنَّ وَأَحْدَبَا.

I lower my eyelids as a cover to shade him, and oh, I wish they were more tender and affectionate.

وَيَا رَبِّ مِنْ أَجْلِ الطُّفُولَةِ وَحْدَهَا أَفِضْ بَرَكَاتِ السِّلْمِ شَرْقًا وَمَغْرِبَا.

O Lord, for the sake of childhood alone, pour out the blessings of peace in the East and the West.

وَصُنْ ضِحْكَةَ الأَطْفَالِ يَا رَبِّ إِنَّهَا إِذَا غَرَّدَتْ فِي مُوحِشِ الرَّمْلِ أَعْشَبَا.

Protect the laughter of children, O Lord, for if it chirps in the desolate sand, the earth turns green.

زَغَبُ القَطَا: الشُّعَيْرَاتُ الصُّفْرُ عَلَى رِيشِ طَائِرِ القَطَا.

Zaghab al-Qata: The yellow downy feathers of the sandgrouse.

الصَّادِي: العَطْشَانُ.

Al-Sadi: The thirsty one.

أُوثِرُ: أَفَضِّلُ.

Uthiru: I prefer.

النُّعْمَى: النِّعْمَةُ.

Al-Nu'ma: Grace or blessing.

أَسْغَبَ: دَخَلَ فِي المَجَاعَةِ.

Asghaba: To go hungry.

الوَشْيُ: القُمَاشُ المُرَقَّشُ المُلَوَّنُ.

Al-Washy: Patterned, colored fabric.

اليَمَانِيُّ: نِسْبَةً إِلَى اليَمَنِ.

Al-Yamani: Relating to Yemen.

فَائِدَةٌ لُغَوِيَّةٌ: أَسْدِلُ: أَسْتُرُ وَأُغَطِّي.

Linguistic note: Asdilu: I cover and veil.

الأَحْدَبُ: كَثِيرُ العَطْفِ.

Al-Ahdab: Very affectionate.

مُوحِشٌ: مُقْفِرٌ، خَالٍ مِنْ مَظَاهِرِ الحَيَاةِ.

Muhish: Desolate, empty of life.

الإِيثَارُ: تَفْضِيلُ الآخَرِينَ عَلَى النَّفْسِ، وَضِدُّهَا الأَثَرَةُ الَّتِي تَعْنِي الأَنَانِيَّةَ.

Al-Ithar: Preferring others over oneself; its opposite is Al-Atharah, which means selfishness.
