وَطَلَعَ الصَّبَاحُ الْبَارِدُ، فَرَأَى الْمَارَّةُ الطِّفْلَةَ، وَقَدْ مَاتَتْ مِنْ شِدَّةِ الْبَرْدِ، مَاتَتْ، وَعُلَبُ الْكِبْرِيتِ حَوْلَهَا فَارِغَةٌ، رَآهَا الْعَابِرُونَ، وَقَالُوا: لَقَدْ كَانَتِ الْمِسْكِينَةُ تُحَاوِلُ أَنْ تَسْتَدْفِئَ، وَلَكِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ فِيهِمْ مَنْ عَرَفَ مَا رَأَتِ الطِّفْلَةُ، وَهِيَ تُشْعِلُ الثِّقَابَ! The cold morning broke, and passersby found the little girl. She had frozen to death, surrounded by empty matchboxes. They looked at her and said, 'The poor thing was trying to keep warm,' but none of them knew what she had seen as she struck those matches.
