الإِمْلَاءُ هَمْزَةُ الوَصْلِ وَهَمْزَةُ القَطْعِ

Dictation: Hamzat al-Wasl and Hamzat al-Qat'.

نَقْرَأُ الآيَاتِ الآتِيَةَ، وَتُلَاحِظُ الكَلِمَاتِ المُلَوَّنَةَ:

Read the following verses and note the colored words:

قَالَ تَعَالَى: ﴿هَلْ أَتَاكَ حَدِيثُ ضَيْفِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْمُكْرَمِينَ إِذْ دَخَلُوا عَلَيْهِ فَقَالُوا سَلَامًا قَالَ سَلَامٌ فَقَرَّبَهُ إِلَيْهِمْ قَالَ أَلَا تَأْكُلُونَ فَأَوْجَسَ مِنْهُمْ خِيفَةً قَالُوا لَا تَخَفْ وَبَشَّرُوهُ بِغُلَامٍ عَلِيمٍ فَرَاغَ إِلَى أَهْلِهِ فَجَاءَ بِعِجْلٍ سَمِينٍ فَأَقْبَلَتِ امْرَأَتُهُ فِي صَرَّةٍ فَصَكَّتْ وَجْهَهَا وَقَالَتْ عَجُوزٌ عَقِيمٌ قَالُوا كَذَلِكِ قَالَ رَبُّكِ إِنَّهُ هُوَ الْحَكِيمُ الْعَلِيمُ﴾

God Almighty says: 'Has the story of Abraham’s honored guests reached you? When they entered his presence and said, "Peace," he replied, "Peace." He turned to his household and brought out a fat calf, placing it before them, and said, "Will you not eat?" Sensing their hesitation, he felt a flicker of fear. They said, "Do not fear," and gave him the good news of a learned son. His wife approached with a cry, struck her face, and said, "I am a barren old woman!" They replied, "So has your Lord said; He is the Wise, the Knowing."' (Quran 51:24-30)

بِمُلَاحَظَتِنَا الكَلِمَاتِ المُلَوَّنَةَ بِاللَّوْنِ الأَزْرَقِ (المُكْرَمِينَ، امْرَأَتُهُ، الحَكِيمُ، العَلِيمُ)؛ نَجِدُهَا قَدْ بَدَأَتْ بِهَمْزَةٍ تَظْهَرُ نُطْقًا وَكِتَابَةً فِي أَوَّلِ الكَلَامِ، وَتَخْتَفِي نُطْقًا، وَتَبْقَى كِتَابَةً إِذَا جَاءَتْ فِي ثَنَايَا الكَلَامِ.

By observing the words colored in blue (al-mukramin, imra'atuhu, al-hakim, al-'alim), we find they begin with a hamza that is pronounced and written at the start of a sentence, but remains written while becoming silent when appearing within a sentence.

أَمَّا الكَلِمَاتُ المُلَوَّنَةَ بِاللَّوْنِ الأَحْمَرِ (أَتَاكَ، إِبْرَاهِيم، أَهْلِهِ، إِنَّهُ) فَقَدْ بَدَأَتْ بِهَمْزَةٍ تَظْهَرُ نُطْقًا وَكِتَابَةً فَوْقَ الأَلِفِ - إِذَا كَانَتْ مَفْتُوحَةً - فِي كَلِمَتَي (أَتَاكَ، أَهْلِهِ)، وَنَرَاهَا تَحْتَ الأَلِفِ - إِذَا كَانَتْ مَكْسُورَةً - فِي كَلِمَتَي (إِبْرَاهِيم، إِنَّهُ)، وَهَذِهِ الهَمْزَةُ لَا تَخْتَفِي نُطْقًا إِذَا جَاءَتْ فِي ثَنَايَا الكَلَامِ؛ لِذَلِكَ تُسَمَّى هَمْزَةَ قَطْعٍ.

The words colored in red (ataka, ibrahim, ahlihi, innahu) begin with a hamza that is pronounced and written above the alif when fatha-voweled, as in (ataka, ahlihi), or below the alif when kasra-voweled, as in (ibrahim, innahu). This hamza is always pronounced, even when appearing within a sentence; therefore, it is called hamzat al-qat'.
