أَهْلاً بِالضَّيْفِ.

Welcome, guest.

شَمْسُ الدِّينِ الْبَدِيوِيُّ.

Shams al-Din al-Badiwi.

إِذَا الْمَرْءُ وَافَى مَنْزِلاً مِنْكَ قَاصِداً قِرَاكَ، وَأَرْمَتْهُ لَدَيْكَ الْمَسَالِكُ.

If someone comes to your home seeking hospitality, and the paths have led him to you,

قَاصِداً: طَالِباً.

Qasidan: seeking.

وَقُلْ مَرْحَباً أَهْلاً وَيَوْمٌ مُبَارَكُ.

Say welcome, greetings, and may your day be blessed.

قِرَاكَ: طَعَامُ ضَيْفِكَ.

Qiraka: food for your guest.

فَكُنْ بَاسِماً فِي وَجْهِهِ مُتَهَلِّلاً.

Greet him with a smile and a cheerful face.

أَرْمَتْهُ: سَاقَتْهُ.

Armathu: brought him.

وَقَدِّمْ لَهُ مَا تَسْتَطِيعُ مِنَ الْقِرَى عَجُولاً، وَلا تَبْخَلْ بِمَا هُوَ هَالِكُ.

Offer him whatever hospitality you can provide without delay, and do not be stingy with what is fleeting.

مُتَهَلِّلاً: فَرِحاً.

Mutahallilan: joyful.

فَقَدْ قِيلَ بَيْتٌ سَالِفٌ مُتَقَدِّمٌ تَدَاوَلَهُ زَيْدٌ وَعَمْرٌو وَمَالِكُ.

For an ancient verse has been passed down by Zayd, Amr, and Malik:

تَدَاوَلَهُ: تَنَاقَلَهُ.

Tadawalahu: transmitted it.

بَشَاشَةُ وَجْهِ الْمَرْءِ خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْقِرَى، فَكَيْفَ بِمَنْ يَأْتِي بِهِ وَهُوَ ضَاحِكُ.

A cheerful face is worth more than the meal itself—how much more so when one offers both with a smile?

الْفَهْمُ وَالتَّحْلِيلُ وَاللُّغَةُ.
