ذَهَبَ الصَّيْفُ مُسْرِعاً وَالجُنْدُبُ يُغَنّي، وَجاءَ الخَرِيفُ، وَهَطَلَ الْمَطَرُ مُبَكِّراً، وَلَمْ يَسْتَطِعِ الجُنْدُبُ أَنْ يَحْصُلَ عَلى طَعَامٍ، وَكادَ الْجُوعُ يَقْتُلُهُ، فَقَالَ في نَفْسِهِ: سَأَذْهَبُ إِلى جارَتِي النَّمْلَةِ، فَأَطْلُبُ مِنْهَا بَعْضَ الطَّعامِ.

Summer passed quickly while the grasshopper sang. Autumn arrived, the rain fell early, and the grasshopper could find no food. Starvation was closing in, so he said to himself, 'I will go to my neighbor the ant and ask her for something to eat.'
