تَدْرِيبٌ (١) نَخْتَارُ الْإِجَابَةَ الصَّحِيحَةَ فِيمَا يَأْتِي:

Exercise (1): Choose the correct answer for the following:

١- مَاذَا نُعْرِبُ الِاسْمَ الْوَاقِعَ بَعْدَ إِلَّا فِي الِاسْتِثْنَاءِ التَّامِّ الْمُوجَبِ؟

1- How do we parse the noun following 'illa' (except) in a complete affirmative exception?

أ- مُسْتَثْنًى.

a- As an exception (mustathna).

ب- بَدَلًا.

b- As a substitute (badal).

ج- حَالًا.

c- As a state (hal).

د- فَاعِلًا.

d- As a subject (fa'il).

٢- أَيُّ الْجُمَلِ الْآتِيَةِ يُعْرَبُ فِيهَا الِاسْمُ الْوَاقِعُ بَعْدَ إِلَّا عَلَى وَجْهَيْنِ؟

2- In which of the following sentences can the noun following 'illa' be parsed in two ways?

أ- يُحِبُّ الْأُدَبَاءَ إِلَّا الْمُتَكَسِّبَ.

a- He loves the writers except for the mercenary.

ب- لَمْ يُوَاسِنِي فِي شِدَّتِي إِلَّا الْأَصْدِقَاءُ.

b- No one comforted me in my hardship except for my friends.

ج- لَا تُعْجِبُنِي الْكُتُبُ إِلَّا النَّافِعَ.

c- I am not impressed by books except for the useful ones.

د- لَا تَلْقَ أَخَاكَ إِلَّا بِوَجْهٍ بَاسِمٍ.

d- Do not meet your brother except with a smiling face.

تَدْرِيبٌ (٢) نُبَيِّنُ أَرْكَانَ الِاسْتِثْنَاءِ فِيمَا يَأْتِي:

Exercise (2): Identify the components of the exception in the following:

أ- قَالَ تَعَالَى: "الْأَخِلَّاءُ يَوْمَئِذٍ بَعْضُهُمْ لِبَعْضٍ عَدُوٌّ إِلَّا الْمُتَّقِينَ" (الزُّخْرُف: ٦٧).

a- God Almighty said: "Close friends, that Day, will be enemies to each other, except for the righteous" (Az-Zukhruf: 67).

ب- لَا يَرْفُضُ الْإِصْغَاءَ لِلْحَقِّ أَحَدٌ إِلَّا الظَّالِمُ.

b- No one refuses to listen to the truth except the oppressor.

ج- تَعِيشُ الْأَسْمَاكُ فِي الْبِحَارِ كُلِّهَا إِلَّا الْبَحْرَ الْمَيِّتَ.

c- Fish live in all seas except for the Dead Sea.

د- كُلُّ الْمَصَائِبِ تَهُونُ عَلَى الْفَتَى إِلَّا شَمَاتَةَ الْأَعْدَاءِ.

d- All calamities are easy for a man to bear except for the gloating of enemies.

تَدْرِيبٌ (٣) نُبَيِّنُ نَوْعَ الِاسْتِثْنَاءِ فِي الْجُمَلِ الْآتِيَةِ:

Exercise (3): Identify the type of exception in the following sentences:

أ- عَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ -رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ- قَالَ: "كُنْتُ رِدْفَ النَّبِيِّ -صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ- لَيْسَ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَهُ إِلَّا مُؤَخِّرَةُ الرَّحْلِ".

a- On the authority of Mu'adh ibn Jabal—may Allah be pleased with him—who said: "I was riding behind the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—with nothing between us but the back of the saddle."

ب- تَتَصَافَى النُّفُوسُ أَمَامَ الْمَصَائِبِ إِلَّا النَّفْسَ الْخَبِيثَةَ.

b- Souls become pure in the face of calamities, except for the wicked soul.

ج- لَا تَسُودُ الشُّعُوبُ إِلَّا بِالْأَخْلَاقِ.

c- Nations do not prevail except through morals.

د- أَحْتَرِمُ النَّاسَ إِلَّا ذَا الْوَجْهَيْنِ.

d- I respect people except for the two-faced.

هـ- لَنْ يَتَنَكَّرَ لِلْجَمِيلِ إِنْسَانٌ إِلَّا الْجَاحِدُ.

e- No one will deny a favor except the ungrateful.
