قِرْدٌ قَدْ أَلِفَهُ، فَهُمَا يَأْكُلَانِ وَيَشْرَبَانِ وَيَلْهُوَانِ، وَقَدْ طَالَتْ غَيْبَتُهُ عَنْكَ، فَانْسِهِ إِذْ نَسِيَكَ، وَلْيَهُنْ عَلَيْكَ إِذْ هُنْتِ عَلَيْهِ، وَإِنِ اسْتَطَعْتِ أَنْ تَحْتَالِي لِلْقِرْدِ فَتُهْلِكِيهِ فَافْعَلِي؛ فَإِنَّ الْقِرْدَ لَوْ هَلَكَ قَدِمَ عَلَيْكِ زَوْجُكِ وَأَقَامَ عِنْدَكِ، فَأَشْحَبَتْ زَوْجَةُ الْغَيْلَمِ لَوْنَهَا وَضَيَّعَتْ نَفْسَهَا حَتَّى أَصَابَتْهَا نَهْكَةٌ شَدِيدَةٌ وَهُزَالٌ.

He has grown fond of a monkey, and they eat, drink, and play together. He has been away from you for a long time, so forget him as he has forgotten you. Let him mean as little to you as you have come to mean to him. If you can scheme to destroy the monkey, do it; if the monkey dies, your husband will return and stay with you. The tortoise's wife grew pale and neglected herself, until she fell into a state of severe exhaustion and emaciation.

ثُمَّ إِنَّ الْغَيْلَمَ قَالَ فِي نَفْسِهِ: لَآتِيَنَّ أَهْلِي فَقَدْ طَالَتْ غَيْبَتِي، فَأَتَى مَنْزِلَهُ فَوَجَدَ زَوْجَتَهُ عَلِيلَةً مَنْهُوكَةً سَيِّئَةَ الْحَالِ، فَقَالَ لَهَا: يَا أُخْتِ، كَيْفَ أَنْتِ؟ فَلَمْ تُجِبْهُ.

The tortoise then said to himself, 'I should return to my family, as I have been away for too long.' He went home and found his wife sick, exhausted, and in a wretched state. He asked her, 'Sister, how are you?' but she did not answer.

فَقَالَ: إِنِّي أَرَاكِ مَنْهُوكَةً، فَلَمْ تُجِبْهُ، فَأَعَادَ الْمَسْأَلَةَ فَأَجَابَتْ عَنْهَا جَارَةٌ لَهَا وَقَالَتْ لَهُ: مَا أَشَدَّ حَالَ زَوْجَتِكِ!

He said, 'I see you are exhausted,' but she remained silent. When he asked again, a neighbor answered for her, saying, 'Your wife is in a terrible state!'
