إِيذَاءُ أَبِي لَهَبٍ وَامْرَأَتِهِ لِلرَّسُولِ. وَطَالَمَا آذَاهُ أَبُو لَهَبٍ، وَامْرَأَتُهُ حَمَّالَةُ الْحَطَبِ. تَبَّتْ يَدَا أَبِي لَهَبٍ وَتَبَّ. شَدَائِدُ وَأَزَمَاتٌ. فَلَمْ يَكُنْ لِلرَّسُولِ بُدٌّ مِنَ الْبَحْثِ عَنْ أَنْصَارٍ جُدُدٍ. فِي غَيْرِ مَكَّةَ؟ مَا دَامَتْ قُرَيْشٌ قَدْ لَجَّتْ فِي عِنَادِهَا، فَلْيَتَّجِهْ وِجْهَةً أُخْرَى، وَلْيَسْلُكْ طَرِيقًا آخَرَ. دَعْوَةُ الرَّسُولِ لِأَهْلِ الطَّائِفِ. لَعَلَّكَ تَعْنِي ذَهَابَهُ إِلَى الطَّائِفِ، مَصِيفِ قُرَيْشٍ؟ وَمَقَرِّ عِبَادَةِ صَنَمِهِمْ. أَيَّ صَنَمٍ تَعْنِي؟ صَنَمَ اللَّاتِ. أَكَانُوا يَعْبُدُونَهُ؟ وَيُقَدِّسُهُ جُمْهُورُ الْعَرَبِ. كَانَتِ الْقَبَائِلُ تَحُجُّ إِلَيْهِ فِي الصَّيْفِ. لَقَدْ خَذَلَتْ قُرَيْشٌ الرَّسُولَ فِي مَكَّةَ. أَمَا كَانَتْ ثَقِيفُ تَنْصُرُهُ فِي الطَّائِفِ؟ أَكَانُوا مِنْ ذَوِي قَرَابَتِهِ؟ كَانَتْ أُسْرَةُ أَبِيهِ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ، وَأُسْرَةُ أُمِّهِ مِنْ ثَقِيفٍ. وَقَدْ تَنَكَّرَتْ لَهُ الْأُولَى. فَاتَّجَهَ بِرَجَائِهِ إِلَى الْأُخْرَى. لَعَلَّهَا تَنْصُرُهُ وَتُؤَيِّدُهُ.

إِيذَاءُ أَبِي لَهَبٍ وَامْرَأَتِهِ لِلرَّسُولِ.
Abu Lahab and his wife’s persecution of the Messenger.
وَطَالَمَا آذَاهُ أَبُو لَهَبٍ وَامْرَأَتُهُ حَمَّالَةُ الْحَطَبِ.
Abu Lahab and his wife, the carrier of firewood, often harmed him.
تَبَّتْ يَدَا أَبِي لَهَبٍ وَتَبَّ.
May the hands of Abu Lahab be ruined, and ruined is he.
شَدَائِدُ وَأَزَمَاتٌ.
Hardships and crises.
فَلَمْ يَكُنْ لِلرَّسُولِ بُدٌّ مِنَ الْبَحْثِ عَنْ أَنْصَارٍ جُدُدٍ.
The Messenger had no choice but to seek new supporters.
فِي غَيْرِ مَكَّةَ؟
Outside of Mecca?
مَا دَامَتْ قُرَيْشٌ قَدْ لَجَّتْ فِي عِنَادِهَا، فَلْيَتَّجِهْ وِجْهَةً أُخْرَى، وَلْيَسْلُكْ طَرِيقًا آخَرَ.
Since Quraish persisted in its stubbornness, he had to head in another direction and follow a different path.
دَعْوَةُ الرَّسُولِ لِأَهْلِ الطَّائِفِ.
The Messenger’s call to the people of Ta'if.
لَعَلَّكَ تَعْنِي ذَهَابَهُ إِلَى الطَّائِفِ، مَصِيفِ قُرَيْشٍ؟
Perhaps you mean his journey to Ta'if, the summer resort of Quraish?
وَمَقَرِّ عِبَادَةِ صَنَمِهِمْ.
And the center of their idol worship.
أَيَّ صَنَمٍ تَعْنِي؟
Which idol do you mean?
صَنَمَ اللَّاتِ.
The idol of Al-Lat.
أَكَانُوا يَعْبُدُونَهُ؟
Did they worship it?
وَيُقَدِّسُهُ جُمْهُورُ الْعَرَبِ.
The Arab masses held it sacred.
كَانَتِ الْقَبَائِلُ تَحُجُّ إِلَيْهِ فِي الصَّيْفِ.
Tribes used to make a pilgrimage to it in the summer.
لَقَدْ خَذَلَتْ قُرَيْشٌ الرَّسُولَ فِي مَكَّةَ.
Quraish had abandoned the Messenger in Mecca.
أَمَا كَانَتْ ثَقِيفُ تَنْصُرُهُ فِي الطَّائِفِ؟
Would Thaqif not support him in Ta'if?
أَكَانُوا مِنْ ذَوِي قَرَابَتِهِ؟
Were they among his kin?
كَانَتْ أُسْرَةُ أَبِيهِ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ، وَأُسْرَةُ أُمِّهِ مِنْ ثَقِيفٍ.
His father’s family was from Quraish, and his mother’s family was from Thaqif.
وَقَدْ تَنَكَّرَتْ لَهُ الْأُولَى.
The former had turned against him.
فَاتَّجَهَ بِرَجَائِهِ إِلَى الْأُخْرَى.
So he placed his hope in the latter.
لَعَلَّهَا تَنْصُرُهُ وَتُؤَيِّدُهُ.
Perhaps they would support and aid him.
