أَوْ الْحِكَايَةُ عَنْ مَعْهُودٍ مِنْ أَفْرَادِ الْجِنْسِ، وَعَهْدُهُ إِمَّا بِتَقَدُّمِ ذِكْرِهِ، نَحْوُ: ﴿إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَا إِلَيْكُمْ رَسُولًا شَاهِدًا عَلَيْكُمْ كَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا إِلَى فِرْعَوْنَ رَسُولًا * فَعَصَى فِرْعَوْنُ الرَّسُولَ فَأَخَذْنَاهُ أَخْذًا وَبِيلًا﴾ [الْمُزَّمِّلُ: ١٥-١٦]، وَإِمَّا بِحُضُورِهِ بِذَاتِهِ، نَحْوُ: ﴿الْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ﴾ [الْمَائِدَةُ: ٣] وَإِمَّا بِمَعْرِفَةِ السَّامِعِ لَهُ، نَحْوُ: ﴿وَإِذْ يُبَايِعُونَكَ تَحْتَ الشَّجَرَةِ﴾ [الْفَتْحُ: ١٨]، وَتُسَمَّى أَلْ عَهْدِيَّةً. أَوْ الْحِكَايَةُ عَنْ جَمِيعِ أَفْرَادِ الْجِنْسِ، نَحْوُ: ﴿إِنَّ الْإِنْسَانَ لَفِي خُسْرٍ﴾ [الْعَصْرُ: ٢] وَتُسَمَّى أَلْ اسْتِغْرَاقِيَّةً، وَقَدْ يُرَادُ بِأَلْ الْإِشَارَةُ إِلَى الْجِنْسِ فِي فَرْدٍ مَا نَحْوُ: وَلَقَدْ أَمُرُّ عَلَى اللَّئِيمِ يَسُبُّنِي * فَمَضَيْتُ ثُمَّتَ قُلْتُ لَا يَعْنِينِي. وَإِذَا وَقَعَ الْمُحَلَّى بِأَلْ خَبَرًا أَفَادَ الْقَصْرَ، نَحْوُ: ﴿وَهُوَ الْغَفُورُ الْوَدُودُ﴾ [الْبُرُوجُ: ١٤]. وَأَمَّا الْمُضَافُ لِمَعْرِفَةٍ فَيُؤْتَى بِهِ إِذَا تَعَيَّنَ طَرِيقًا لِإِحْضَارِ مَعْنَاهُ أَيْضًا كَكِتَابِ سِيبَوَيْهِ وَسَفِينَةِ نُوحٍ، أَمَّا إِذَا لَمْ يَتَعَيَّنْ لِذَلِكَ فَيَكُونُ لِأَغْرَاضٍ أُخْرَى: ١ - كَتَعَذُّرِ التِّعْدَادِ، أَوْ تَعَسُّرِهِ، نَحْوُ: أَجْمَعَ أَهْلُ الْحَقِّ.

أَوْ الْحِكَايَةُ عَنْ مَعْهُودٍ مِنْ أَفْرَادِ الْجِنْسِ، وَعَهْدُهُ إِمَّا بِتَقَدُّمِ ذِكْرِهِ، نَحْوُ: ﴿إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَا إِلَيْكُمْ رَسُولًا شَاهِدًا عَلَيْكُمْ كَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا إِلَى فِرْعَوْنَ رَسُولًا * فَعَصَى فِرْعَوْنُ الرَّسُولَ فَأَخَذْنَاهُ أَخْذًا وَبِيلًا﴾ [الْمُزَّمِّلُ: ١٥-١٦]، وَإِمَّا بِحُضُورِهِ بِذَاتِهِ، نَحْوُ: ﴿الْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ﴾ [الْمَائِدَةُ: ٣] وَإِمَّا بِمَعْرِفَةِ السَّامِعِ لَهُ، نَحْوُ: ﴿وَإِذْ يُبَايِعُونَكَ تَحْتَ الشَّجَرَةِ﴾ [الْفَتْحُ: ١٨]، وَتُسَمَّى أَلْ عَهْدِيَّةً.
Or it may be a reference to a known individual of a genus, and its being known is either by its prior mention, such as: 'Indeed, We have sent to you a Messenger as a witness upon you just as We sent to Pharaoh a messenger. But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger, so We seized him with a ruinous seizing' [Al-Muzzammil: 15-16]; or by its presence itself, such as: 'This day I have perfected for you your religion' [Al-Ma'idah: 3]; or by the listener's knowledge of it, such as: 'And when they were pledging allegiance to you under the tree' [Al-Fath: 18]; and it is called 'Al' of reference (al-'ahdiyyah).
أَوْ الْحِكَايَةُ عَنْ جَمِيعِ أَفْرَادِ الْجِنْسِ، نَحْوُ: ﴿إِنَّ الْإِنْسَانَ لَفِي خُسْرٍ﴾ [الْعَصْرُ: ٢] وَتُسَمَّى أَلْ اسْتِغْرَاقِيَّةً، وَقَدْ يُرَادُ بِأَلْ الْإِشَارَةُ إِلَى الْجِنْسِ فِي فَرْدٍ مَا نَحْوُ: وَلَقَدْ أَمُرُّ عَلَى اللَّئِيمِ يَسُبُّنِي * فَمَضَيْتُ ثُمَّتَ قُلْتُ لَا يَعْنِينِي.
Or it may be a reference to all individuals of a genus, such as: 'Indeed, mankind is in loss' [Al-'Asr: 2], and it is called 'Al' of inclusion (al-istighraqiyyah); and sometimes 'Al' is intended to point to the genus within a specific individual, such as: 'And I pass by the base person who insults me, so I walk on and say: he does not mean me.'
وَإِذَا وَقَعَ الْمُحَلَّى بِأَلْ خَبَرًا أَفَادَ الْقَصْرَ، نَحْوُ: ﴿وَهُوَ الْغَفُورُ الْوَدُودُ﴾ [الْبُرُوجُ:
And when a word prefixed with 'Al' occurs as a predicate, it signifies restriction, such as: 'And He is the Forgiving, the Affectionate' [Al-Buruj: 14].
