الرَّعِيَّةُ، فَقَدْ رُزِئْتِ عَظِيماً، وَأُعْطِيتِ جَسِيماً، فَاشْكُرِي اللَّهَ عَلَى مَا أُعْطِيتِ، وَاصْبِرِي عَلَى مَا رُزِئْتِ، فَقَدْ فَقَدْتِ الْخَلِيفَةَ، وَأُعْطِيتِ الْخِلَافَةَ، فَفَارَقْتِ خَلِيلاً، وَوُهِبْتِ جَلِيلاً.

O people, you have suffered a great loss yet received a heavy burden. Thank God for what you have been given and bear your loss with patience. You have lost a Caliph but inherited the Caliphate; you have parted with a friend but been granted a majestic successor.

اصْبِرِي يَزِيدُ فَقَدْ فَارَقْتِ ذَا ثِقَةٍ وَاشْكُرِي حِبَاءَ الَّذِي بِالْمُلْكِ أَصْفَاكِ.

Be patient, Yazid, for you have lost a trusted leader, and give thanks to the One who chose you for this kingdom.

لَا رُزْءَ أَصْبَحَ فِي الْأَقْوَامِ نَعْلَمُهُ كَمَا رُزِئْتِ وَلَا عُقْبَى كَعُقْبَاكِ.

We know of no affliction among the nations like yours, nor any destiny that compares to your own.
