وَصَلَ إِلَيْنَا مِنْ كُتُبِهِ (مُرُوجُ الذَّهَبِ أَسَاسًا).

It reached us through his books, primarily Muruj al-Dhahab.

وَلَمْ نَلْتَفِتْ هُنَا إِلَى مَا يُورِدُهُ الْمَسْعُودِيُّ مِنْ أَخْبَارٍ تَظَلُّ عَلَى أَهَمِّيَّتِهَا مَعْرُوفَةً يَتَكَرَّرُ ذِكْرُهَا فِيمَا لَا حَصْرَ لَهُ مِنْ كُتُبٍ وَمَرَاجِعَ قَدِيمَةٍ وَحَدِيثَةٍ، عَنْ نَشْأَةِ الْكَوْنِ وَالْخَلِيقَةِ، وَعَنِ التَّارِيخِ الْإِسْلَامِيِّ (الرَّاشِدِيِّ وَالْأُمَوِيِّ وَالْعَبَّاسِيِّ) الَّذِي تَمْلَأُ أَخْبَارُهُ ثَقَافَتَنَا الْبَيْتِيَّةَ وَالْمَدْرَسِيَّةَ وَالِاجْتِمَاعِيَّةَ.

We have not focused here on the reports al-Mas'udi provides—which, despite their importance, are already well-known and frequently repeated in countless ancient and modern sources regarding the origins of the universe and creation, or the history of the Islamic era (Rashidi, Umayyad, and Abbasid) that permeates our home, school, and social culture.

إِنَّ الْهَدَفَ كَمَا أَسْلَفْنَا، لَيْسَ تَقْدِيمَ بَحْثٍ أَكَادِيمِيٍّ عِلْمِيٍّ يَتَنَاوَلُ مَا هُوَ مَعْرُوفٌ، مُثْقَلٍ بِالْهَوَامِشِ، وَالْإِحَالَاتِ وَالتَّعْلِيقَاتِ.

Our goal, as stated, is not to present a formal academic study on well-trodden ground, burdened with footnotes, citations, and commentary.

فَنَحْنُ نَتَوَجَّهُ بِهَذَا الْكِتَابِ إِلَى النَّاشِئَةِ، مُتَوَجِّهِينَ قَبْلَ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ، الْأَخْذَ بِأَيْدِيهِمْ وَتَشْجِيعَهُمْ عَلَى قِرَاءَةِ كُتُبِ التُّرَاثِ، وَاسْتِقَاءِ مَا فِيهَا مِنْ مُتْعَةٍ وَفَائِدَةٍ.

We are writing this book for young readers, aiming above all to guide them and encourage them to read heritage literature and draw both enjoyment and value from it.

وَيُمَثِّلُ هَذَا التَّوَجُّهُ، فِيمَا يُمَثِّلُهُ، سَعْيًا لِتَبْدِيدِ مَا يُخَالِطُ بَعْضَ الْأَذْهَانِ مِنْ اعْتِقَادٍ يَكَادُ يُصْبِحُ يَقِينًا بِأَنَّ كُتُبَ التُّرَاثِ عَسِيرَةُ الْقِرَاءَةِ، عَصِيَّةٌ عَلَى الْفَهْمِ، مَكْتُوبَةٌ بِلُغَةٍ عَتِيقَةٍ، مُقَعَّرَةٍ، وَأَلْفَاظٍ مَهْجُورَةٍ لَا سَبِيلَ إِلَى التَّوَاصُلِ مَعَهَا الْيَوْمَ.

This approach is, in part, an effort to dispel the common, near-certain belief that heritage texts are impossible to read, resistant to understanding, and written in archaic, convoluted language with obsolete vocabulary that no one can connect with today.

صَحِيحٌ أَنَّ هَذِهِ الصُّعُوبَةَ مَوْجُودَةٌ حَقًّا، كَمَا فِي لُغَةِ كُلِّ تُرَاثٍ قَدِيمٍ، غَيْرَ أَنَّهَا صُعُوبَةٌ نِسْبِيَّةٌ، وَطَبِيعِيَّةٌ، وَمَا الْمُبَالَغَةُ فِي تَضْخِيمِهَا إِلَّا أَشَدُّ خَطَرًا مِنْهَا.

While it is true that this difficulty exists—as it does with any ancient literature—it is relative and natural, and exaggerating it is far more dangerous than the difficulty itself.

وَنَحْنُ نَرَى أَنَّ تَخَطِّيَ هَذِهِ الْمُشْكِلَةِ يَتَطَلَّبُ إِقَامَةَ جِسْرٍ بَيْنَ النَّاشِئَةِ وَمُخْتَارَاتٍ مِنَ التُّرَاثِ مُشَوِّقَةٍ وَمُيَسَّرَةٍ، أَيْ نُحَافِظُ فِيهَا عَلَى لُغَةِ كَاتِبِهَا، وَلُغَةِ عَصْرِهَا مِنْ جِهَةٍ، وَتَكُونُ مَوْضِعَ قَدْرٍ مَحْدُودٍ مِنَ التَّصَرُّفِ، تُمْلِيهِ الضَّرُورَةُ مِنْ جِهَةٍ ثَانِيَةٍ.

We believe that overcoming this problem requires building a bridge between young readers and engaging, accessible selections from our heritage. This means preserving the author's original language and the tone of the era, while applying only the limited modifications that necessity dictates.

هَذَا التَّصَرُّفُ يَتَضَمَّنُ أَوَّلًا اسْتِبْعَادَ جُمَلٍ وَتَعَابِيرَ وَتَفَاصِيلَ فَاتَ زَمَانُهَا، أَوْ لَيْسَتْ جَوْهَرِيَّةً الْآنَ، وَلَا يَخِلُّ تَعْدِيلُهَا أَوْ إِغْفَالُهَا بِفَهْمِ سِيَاقِ النَّصِّ الْمُخْتَارِ وَلَا بِمَعْنَاهُ.

Such modifications involve, first, removing sentences, expressions, or details that are outdated or non-essential, provided that these changes do not compromise the context or meaning of the selected text.

وَثَانِيًا تَوْضِيحَ كَلِمَةٍ بِمُرَادِفَةٍ عَصْرِيَّةٍ أَحْيَانًا، عَلَى أَلَّا يَطَالَ التَّصَرُّفُ إِلَّا عِبَارَاتٍ أَوْ مُفْرَدَاتٍ مُحَدَّدَةً فِي النَّصِّ تَفِيضُ عَنْ حَاجَةِ الْفِتْيَانِ أَوْ قُدْرَتِهِمْ عَلَى الْفَهْمِ، وَلَا تَتَلَاعَبُ بِالنَّصِّ إِضَافَةً أَوْ تَحْوِيرًا.

Second, it involves clarifying certain words with modern synonyms, provided that the editing is limited to specific phrases or terms that exceed the needs or comprehension of young readers, without manipulating the text through unnecessary additions or alterations.

وَهَكَذَا، لَوْ كَانَتِ الْغَايَةُ تَنْحَصِرُ فِي إِطْلَاعِ النَّاشِئَةِ عَلَى حَيَاةِ الْمَسْعُودِيِّ، وَالتَّعْرِيفِ بِعَصْرِهِ، وَرِحْلَاتِهِ وَأَعْمَالِهِ، لَكَانَ لَنَا طَرِيقَةٌ أُخْرَى فِي السَّيْرِ إِلَى بُلُوغِ تِلْكَ الْغَايَةِ.

Thus, if our goal were merely to introduce young readers to al-Mas'udi’s life, his era, his travels, and his works, we would have chosen a different path to achieve that end.

أَو بِالْأَحْرَى لَامْتَنَعْنَا عَنْ كِتَابَةِ مَا نَحْنُ مُقْدِمُونَ عَلَى كِتَابَتِهِ، وَلَاكْتَفَيْنَا بِمَا هُوَ مَوْجُودٌ مِنْ مُؤَلَّفَاتٍ، وَأَبْحَاثٍ، أَوْ فِي مَوْسُوعَاتٍ، وَكُتُبٍ تَارِيخِيَّةٍ عَامَّةٍ، أَوْ تَعْلِيمِيَّةٍ، أَوْ مُتَخَصِّصَةٍ فِي هَذَا الْمَوْضُوعِ.

Or rather, we would have refrained from writing this book altogether, relying instead on the existing compositions, research, encyclopedias, and general, educational, or specialized historical books already available on the subject.

وَعَلَيْهِ فَإِنَّنَا نَعُدُّ نَجَاحًا لِقَصْدِنَا إِذَا مَا تَمَكَّنَّا مِنْ جَعْلِ قَارِئِ هَذَا الْكِتَابِ يَشْعُرُ بِالشَّوْقِ إِلَى / وَالرَّغْبَةِ فِي قِرَاءَةِ كُتُبِ التُّرَاثِ، سَوَاءٌ فِي ذَلِكَ كُتُبُ الْمَسْعُودِيِّ وَغَيْرِهِ، وَعَدَمِ الِاكْتِفَاءِ بِالشَّائِعِ وَالْمَسْمُوعِ، أَوْ بِتَلَقُّفِ مُتَفَرِّقَاتِ الْأَخْبَارِ الْمَبْثُوثَةِ اعْتِبَاطًا هُنَا وَهُنَاكَ، وَعَلَى صَفَحَاتِ الْإِنْتَرْنِتِ مَثَلًا.

Therefore, we will consider our efforts a success if we can inspire the reader of this book to feel a genuine desire to read heritage literature—whether by al-Mas'udi or others—rather than settling for hearsay, common knowledge, or the random, scattered snippets of information found here and there, such as on the internet.

سَنَكُونُ قَدْ حَقَّقْنَا الْأَمَلَ فِي تَحْرِيرِ الْقَارِئِ الْفَتِيِّ مِنْ خَوْفِ التُّرَاثِ، فَفَتَحْنَا الْبَابَ لِتَحْرِيكِ خَيَالِهِ، وَإِغْنَاءِ قَامُوسِهِ اللُّغَوِيِّ، وَسَاهَمْنَا فِي تَرْسِيخِ يَقِينِهِ بِفَائِدَةِ الْعَوْدَةِ يَوْمًا إِلَى.

We will have fulfilled our hope of freeing the young reader from the fear of heritage, opening the door to stimulating their imagination, enriching their vocabulary, and helping them gain confidence in the value of returning to these texts.
