2 وَقَّفَهُ عَلَى الأَمْرِ ذ [ He made him to pause, or wait, at the thing, or affair ]. (K, TA, in art. ثبط.) See the quasi-pass. تَوَقَّفَ: and see ثَبَّطَهُ. ― -b2- وَقَّفَهُ, inf. n. تَوْقِيفٌ He taught him the places of pausing, in reading. (Mgh.) And hence, He made him to know a thing. (Mgh.) ― -b3- وَقَّفَهُ عَلَى الشَّىْءِ, meaning عَرَّفَهُ اـِيَّاهُ, He made him acquainted with the thing; informed him of it; gave him notice of it; though often occurring, for وَقَفَهُ عَلَيْهِ, seems to be post-classical. It is used in this sense, or as meaning He (God) revealed to him the thing, in many places in the Mz, 1st نوع: as, for ex, in the following instance, cited from IF, وَقَّفَ ا@للّٰهُ اآدَمَ عَلَى مَا شَاآءَ أَنْ يُعَلِّمَهُ اـِيَّاهُ [ God taught, or revealed to, Adam what He pleased to teach him ]. ― -b4- وَقَّفَ الحَدِيثَ, (JK,) inf. n. تَوْقِيفٌ, (K,) He explained the tradition; syn. بَيَّنَهُ. (JK, K. *) ― -b5- تَوْقِيفٌ, as a legal term: see نَصَّ عَلَى شَىْءٍ مَّا. ― -b6- See 1

3 وَاقَفَ ذ He stood with another in a competition; was a partner in a match, &c.: see رَسِيلٌ.

4 أَوْقَفَ see 1. ― -b2- أَوْقَفَهُ عَلَى شَىْءٍ He acquainted him with a thing. ― -b3- اوقفته عَلَى ذَنْبِهِ: see وَقَفْتُهُ, which is the expression commonly known.

5 تَوَقَّفَ عَلَى الشَّىْءِ ذ (tropical:) He paused, or waited, at the thing; syn. تَلَبَّثَ. (IDrd, K, TA.) (Accord. to some copies of the K, تَثَبَّتَ.] You say, تَوَقَّفْتُ عَلَى هٰذَا الأَمْرِ (tropical:) I paused, or waited, at this thing, or affair. (TA.) And تَوَقَّفَ عَلَى جَوَابِ كَلَامِهِ (tropical:) [ He paused, or waited, at the reply to his speech ]. (TA.) And hence, تَوَقَّفَ عَلَى السَّمَاعِ He limited, or restricted, himself to what had been heard [from the Arabs, with respect to a construction, &c.]; did not transgress it, or overstep it. See مُتَوَقَّفٌ. ― -b2- تَوَقَّفَ فِيهِ (assumed tropical:) He paused upon it; he hesitated, or deliberated, respecting it. Of very frequent occurrence. ― -b3- تَوَقَّفَ عَنِ الأَمْرِ (assumed tropical:) He held, refrained, or abstained, from the thing, or affair. (Msb.) ― -b4- تَوَقَّفَ عَلَى كَذَا It (for instance, an opinion or a judgment, and the truth of an evidence or a demonstration, and the result of an inquiry or investigation) rested, was founded or grounded, depended, or was dependent, upon such a thing. You say, of knowledge, يَتَوَقَّفُ حُصُولُهُ عَلَى كَذَا Its origination rests upon such a thing; as, for instance, speculation.

وَقْفٌ ذ An entailed, or unalienable, legacy or gift; a mortmain. See أَرْقَبَ. ― -b2- الوُقُوفُ بِعَرَفَات The halting of the pilgrims at Mount 'Arafát.

حَبِطَ مَوْقِفُ الفَرَسِ ذ The horse's belly was inflated: see حَبِطَ.

مَوْقُوفُ عَلَى حَدِّ كُفْرٍ ذ Brought to the verge of infidelity: see حَدٌّ.

أَنَا مُتَوَقّفٌ فى هٰذَا ذ [ I am pausing, or hesitating, respecting this; ] I do not form, or give, a decided opinion (لَا أُمْضِى رَأْيًا) respecting this. (TA.)

1 وَقَاهُ ا@للّٰهُ السُّوْءَ ذ God preserved him from evil. (Msb.) See a verse cited voce نَقَشَ. ― -b2- وَقَاكَ اللّٰهُ كُلَّ مَحْذُور God preserve thee from all fear: see مَحْذُورٌ. ― -b3- قِ, or قِهْ, and تَوَقَّ, are imperatives [meaning Be thou cautious ]. (JK.) ― -b4- قِ عَلَى ظَلْعِكَ: see ظَلَعَ. ― -b5- وَقَاهُ and ↓ اِتَّقَاهُ both signify He was cautious of it; syn. حَذِرَهُ. (K.)

5 تَوَقَّاهُ ذ (and, accord. to a usage in the K, art. حرز, also تَوَقَّى مِنْهُ) He guarded against it; was cautious of it; syn. اِحْتَرَزَ منه and تَحَرَّزَ منه. (S, K, * art. حرز.) ― -b2- تَبَقَّهْ وَتَوَقَّهْ: see 4 in art. بقى.

8 اِتَّقى ذ He preserved, or guarded, himself exceedingly, or extraordinarily: (Ksh, Bd in ii. 1:) he put a thing between him and another to preserve him, or guard him. (Ham, p. 359.) ― -b2- In the conventional language of the law, He preserved, or guarded, himself exceedingly, or extraordinarily, (Ksh, Bd, ubi supra,) from sin, of commission or of omission, (Ksh,) [or] from what would harm him in the world to come. (Bd, who describes three degrees.) It may often be rendered He was pious; or careful of his religious duties. ― -b3- اِتَّقَى عَلَيْهِمْ وَحَذِرَ [ He guarded himself against them in an extraordinary degree, and was cautious, or wary ]. (JK, TA, in art. خشى.) See 1. ― -b4- يَتْقِى, for يَتَّقِى: see art. تقى: and see a verse of Khufáf Ibn-Nudbeh, (quoted in the S, in art. وقى,) cited voce أَثْرٌ. ― -b5- يَتَّقْ for يَتَّقِ: see a verse cited voce مُتَأَوِّبٌ.

وَقِىٌّ ذ Cautious, guarding himself from sin, &c.: see تَقِىٌّ.

وَقِيَّةٌ ذ Property by means of which one preserves himself: pl. وَقِيَّاتٌ. (TA.) See a verse cited voce مَحْبَلٌ.

وِقَايَةٌ ذ Excess of preserving or guarding. (Ksh, Bd in ii. 1.) ― -b2- A preservative.

وَاقٍ ذ A saddle that does not gall the back. (S, K.)

وَاقِيَةٌ ذ used as an inf. n., like بَاقِيَّةٌ: see Har, p. 136. ― -b2- وَاقِيَةٌ as meaning one preserver: see an ex. voce بَاقِيَةٌ.

أُوقِيَّةٌ ذ An ounce: see رِطْلٌ, in two places.

عَكَّ وَكَّ ذ and عَكَّى وَكَّى: see art. عك.

وَاكِظٌ عَلَى كَذَا ذ and مُوَاكِظٌ i. q. وَاظِبٌ and مُوَاظِبٌ: Attending assiduously to such a thing; intent upon it. (Lh, in TA, art. وظب.)

وَكَعَةٌ ذ pl. of وَكِيعٌ, like as خَبَثَةٌ is of خَبِيثٌ, Base: see a verse cited voce أَحْصَنَ.

1 وَكَفَ ذ said of water from the eyes: see a verse cited voce رَسَمَ. One of its inf. ns. is وَكَفَانٌ. (K, voce جذٌّ.)

2 وُكِّفَ عَلَى الخُبْزِ ذ [ It was made to drip upon bread ]; said of fat melting and dripping. (TA in art. جمل.) ― -b2- وَكَّفَ and ↓ أَوْكَفَ: see أَكَّفَ and اآكَفَ.

وَكْفٌ ذ : see an ex. in a verse cited voce خَيْطَةٌ.

وَكِيفٌ ذ , inf. n. of 1: see رِسَمَ.

1 وَكَلَهُ اـِلَى رَأْيِهِ ذ , inf. n. وَكْلٌ and وُكُولٌ, He left him to his opinion, or judgment. (TA.) And وَكَلْتُهُ اـِلَى نَفْسِهِ, aor. يَكِلُ, inf. n. وُكُولٌ, [ I left him to himself; ] I did not manage his affair, nor aid him. (Msb.) And كِلْنِى اـِلَى كَذَا Leave thou me to manage such a thing. (TA.) ― -b2- وَكَلْتُهُ اـِلَى دِينِهِ [ I left him to his religion, not interfering with him therein ]. (S, Msb, K, voce دَيَّنْتُهُ.)

2 وَكَّلَهُ بِشَىْءٍ ذ He appointed him, or intrusted him, as his commissioned agent, factor, or deputy, with the management, or disposal, of a thing. ― -b2- وَكَّلْتُ بِفُلَانٍ I associated a وَكِيل [or factor, &c.] with such a one. (T in art. بِ.)

5 تَوَكَّلَ عَلَيْهِ ذ , and عليه ↓ اِتَّكَلَ, He relied upon him; (S, Msb;) and confided in him: (Msb:) he submitted himself to him. (K.) ― -b2- تَوَكَّلَ بِالأَمْرِ He became responsible to him for the management of the affair. (TA.) ― -b3- تَوَكَّلَ لَهُ بِهِ He became responsible to him for it. (TA.) ― -b4- تَوَكَّلَ فِى أَمْرٍ He became وَكِيل in an affair. ― -b5- توكّل بِمَالِ أَحَدٍ He became administrator of one's property.

6 تَوَاكَلَهُ ذ He deserted him, or it: i. q. تركته: see two exs. voce سَدِرٌ.

8 اـِوْتَكَلَ see 5. ― -b2- مُتَّكَلٌ is used as an inf. n. of اِتَّكَلَ.

وَكَلٌ ذ and ↓ وُكَلَةٌ and ↓ تُكَلَةٌ An impotent man, (S, K,) who commits his affair to another. (S.)

وُكَلَةٌ ذ : see وَكَلٌ

تُكَلَةٌ ذ : see وَكَلٌ

وَكِيلٌ ذ A witness; syn. شَهِيدٌ. (Jel, ii. 66; and iv. 169.) ― -b2- A commissioned agent; a factor; a deputy.

وَكَالَةٌ ذ , for دَارُ الوَكَالَةِ, A factory: pl. وَكَائِلُ.

وُكْنَةٌ ذ certainly means, sometimes, A bird's nest, wherever it be: see an ex. in the first paragraph of art. غدو.

وِكَاآءٌ ذ A tie: see an ex. voce اِسْتٌ, in art. سته. ― -b2- The tie, (S, Mgh, Msb, K,) which is a cord, (Msb,) of the head (S, Msb) of the قِرْبة, (S, Mgh, Msb, K,) &c. (K.)

3 وَالَسَ ذ He acted perfidiously, or practised fraud: see دَالَسَ.

وَلْسٌ ذ Treachery: see دَلَّسَ.

2 وَلَّعَهُ بِهِ ذ [ i. q. أَوْلَعَهُ بِهِ]: (K, art. غرو:) He made him to be desirous, or fond, of it. See أَغْرَاهُ بِهِ.

4 أَوْلَعَهُ بِكَذَا ذ He, or it, rendered him eagerly desirous of such a thing; or fond of it. (MA.) ― -b2- أَوْلَعَهُ بِهِ i. q. أَغْرَاهُ بِهِ. (K.) ― -b3- أَولِعَ بِهِ He became attached to it, or fond of it; [ was devoted, or addicted, to it; was eagerly desirous of it; ] he adhered, clung, or clave, to it; or loved it; (Msb;) i. q. أُغْرِىَ به. (S.) See this last, and أُغْرِمَ بِهِ.

وَلْعٌ ذ Lying: see شَهْلٌ.

وُلُوعٌ ذ Eager desire [بِشَىْءٍ for a thing ]; syn. حِرْصٌ: (Har, p. 607:) fondness [for it]; attachment [to it]: (L, Msb, TA:) i. q. غَرَامٌ. (S, K, in art. غرم.)

وَلِيع ذ and وَلِيعَة of the طَلْع: see ضَحْكٌ.

مُوَلَّعٌ ذ Marked, in oblong shapes, with black and white: (S:) or, with other colours. (As, S.) See also مُلَمَّعٌ.

1 وَلَغَ ذ He (a dog) lapped. (S, Msb, K.) See an ex. voce مَحْسُومٌ.

الوَلْفُ ذ The common cyclamen: see بَخُورُ مَرْيَمَ.

وِلَافٌ ذ , for اـِلَافٌ: see أَلِفَهُ.

وَلِيمَةٌ ذ A repast prepared on the occasion of a wedding: (T, S, M, Mgh, Msb, K:) or, on any occasion. (M, Mgh, K.)
