مَلِيًّا ذ A while: (Msb:) or a long time. (S, Msb.)

1 مَنَّ عَلَيْهِ ذ , (S, M, Msb, K,) aor. مَنُ3َ , (Msb,) inf. n. مَنٌّ (S, M, Msb, K) and مِنِّينَى; (K;) and ↓ امتنّ; (Msb;) He conferred, or bestowed, upon him, a favour, or benefit. (S, M, Msb, K.) You say, مَنَّ عَلَيْهِ شَيْأً, and بِشَىْءٍ, which latter is more common, and عليه بِهِ ↓ امتنّ He conferred, or bestowed, a thing upon him as a favour. (Msb.) ― -b2- مَنَّ عَلَيْهِ, (S, M, Msb, K,) inf. n. مَنٌّ (T, Msb) or مِنَّةٌ; (S, K;) and ↓ امتن (S, M, Msb, K) and ↓ تمنّن; (M;) He reproached him for a favour, or benefit, which he (the former) had conferred, or bestowed; (M;) he recounted his gifts or actions to him. (Msb.) Ex., عَلَيْهَا بِمَا مَهَرَهَا ↓ اِمْتَنَّ [ He reproached her for the dowry he had given her ]. (K, art. مهر.) See Bd, ii. 264. See also an ex. in a verse cited voce سَرِفَ.

مَنْ ذ [used for مَا in the sense of What? as in the following of El-Khansà, أَلَا مَنْ لِعَيْنِى لَا تَجِفُّ دُمُوعُهَا O! what aileth mine eye, that its tears dry not? quoted in the TA, art. فثأ.] ― -b2- مَنْ: respecting its dual مَنَانْ and مَنَيْنْ, and its pl. مَنُونْ and مَنِينْ, see I'Ak, p. 319. ― -b3- مَنْ لِى بِكَذَا: see بِ (near the end of the paragraph).

مِنْ ذ : ― -b2- زَيْدٌ أَعْقَلُ مِنْ أَنْ يَكْذِب means مِنَ الذَِّى يَكْذِبُ (Kull, p. 78) [i. e. Zeyd is more reasonable than he who lies: but, though this is the virtual meaning, the proper explanation, accord. to modern usage, is, that أَنْ is here for أَنَّ with the adjunct pronoun هُ; for in a phrase of this kind, an adjunct pronoun is sometimes expressed; so that the aor. must be marfooa; and the literal meaning is, Zeyd is more reasonable than that he will lie; which is equivalent to saying, Zeyd is too reasonable to lie. It may be doubted, however, whether a phrase of this kind be of classical authority. The only other instance that I have found is هُوَ أَحْصَنُ مِنْ أَنْ يْرَام وَأَعَزُّ مِن أَنْ يُضَام, in the TA, voce أَلْ. Accord. to modern usage, one may say, أَنْتَ أَعْقَلُ مِنْ أَنَّكَ تَفْعَلُ كَذَا, which virtually means Thou art too reasonable to do such a thing; and here we cannot substitute ا@لَّذِن for أَنّ. See أَنْ for أَنَّ.] ― -b3- أَخْزَى ا@للّٰهُ الكَاذِبَ مِنِّى وَمِنْكَ: see أَىٌّ ― -b4- لَقِيتُ مِنْهُ أَسَدًا: see أَسْدٌ: and لَقِيتُ ― -b5- مِنْهُ بَحْرًا; and رَأَيْتُ مِنْهُ بَحْرًا: see بحر ― -b6- مِنْ in the sense of عِنْدَ: see جَدٌّ ― -b7- جَرَى مِنْهُ مَجْرَى كَذَا: see 1 in art. جرى ― -b8- مِنْ and عَنْ, differences between: see عَنْ ― -b9- مِنْ often means Some. ― -b10- Often redundant: see 1 in art. عيض. ― -b11- Of, or among: see two exs. voce فِى, latter part. ― -b12- حُسَيْنٌ مِنِّى وَأَنَا مِنْهُ Hoseyn and I are as one thing, [as though each were a part of the other,] in respect of the love that is due to us, &c. (Commencement of a tradition in the Jámi' es-Sagheer: thus explained in the Expos. of El-Munáwee.) See Ham, p. 139; and De Sacy's Gr. i. 492. ― -b13- مَا أَنَا مَنْ دَدٍ وَلَا الدَّدُ مِنِّى: see art. دد. IbrD confirms my rendering of this saying. ― -b14- يَتَعَرَّضُ اـِلَى شَىْءٍ لَيْسَ مِنْهُ [ He applies himself to a thing not of his business to do ]. (TA, art. عش.) ― -b15- لَيْسَ مِنَّا He is not of our dispositions, nor of our way, course, or manner, of acting, or the like. (TA, art. غش.) ― -b16- لَيْسَ مِنِّى (Kur, ii. 250) He is not of my followers: (Bd, Jel:) or he is not at one, or in union, with me. (Bd. See 1 in art. طعم.) See a similar usage of من, voce عِيصٌ. ― -b17- أَنَا مِنْهُ كَحَاقِنِ الاـِهَالَةِ: see حَاقِنٌ ― -b18- مِنْ is used in the sense of فى in the phrase مِنْ يَوْمِ الجُمْعَةِ [ In, or on, the day of congregation ] in the Kur lxii. 9. (K, Jel.) So, too, in مِنْ يَوْمِهِ In, or on, his, meaning, the same, day: and مِنْ سَاعَتِهِ In, or at, his, meaning the same, instant of time. See also De Sacy's Gr., ii. 526.

مُنَ ا@للّٰهِ ذ is for أَيْمُنُ اللّٰه.

مَنِىٌّ ذ and المَنِىُّ, from مَنْ: see أَيِّىٌّ; and De Sacy's Anthol. Gr. Ar., pp. 374 and 401, and 165 .

مَنٌّ ذ : see رِطْلٌ.

مِنَّةٌ ذ [ An obligation, عَلَى أَحَدٍ upon one, and also لَهُ to him. ] ― -b2- A favour, or benefit, conferred, or bestowed. (M, Msb.) ― -b3- Also an inf. n. See مَنَّ عَلَيْهِ.

لَا أَفْعَلُهُ أُخْرَى المَنُونِ ذ I will not do it till the end of time. (S.) ― -b2- مَنُونٌ is fem. and sing. and pl. (Fr, S.)

مَنِينٌ ذ The first ( or main ) rope of a well. See كَرَبٌ.

مَنَّانٌ ذ Very bountiful or beneficent. ― -b2- Also [ Very reproachful for his gifts; ] one who gives nothing without reproaching for it and making account of it: an intensive epithet. (TA.)

اِمْتِنَانِىٌّ ذ Gratuitous; granted as a favour: opposed to وُجُوبِىٌّ.

مَنْجَنُوقٌ منجنوق , مَنْجَنُونٌ, مِْنَجُنوقٌ, مِنْجَنُونٌ, and مَنْجَنِيقٌ: see art. جنق.

1 مَنَعَ ذ He prevented, hindered, held back, [ impeded, withheld, arrested, restrained, kept, debarred, precluded, inhibited, forbade, prohibited, interdicted: ] (MA, KL, &c.:) he denied, or refused; doubly trans.; (S, K, &c.:) مَنْعٌ is the contr. of اـِعْطَاآءٌ. (S, Mgh, K.) ― -b2- مَنَعَهُ [ He protected it, or defended it, or guarded it, (namely a place or the like) from, or against, encroachment, invasion, or attack: ] he protected, defended, or guarded, him. (T in art. ذب.) ― -b3- مَنَعَهُ العَطِيَّةُ [ He refused him the gift ]. (TA in art. حرم.) ― -b4- مَنَعَهُ الشَّىْءَ i. q. حَرَمَهُ اـِيَّاهُ [q. v.] (S in art. حرم.) ― -b5- مَنُعَ الشَّىْءُ, inf. n. مَنَاعَةٌ, i. q. اِعْتَزَّ and تَعَسَّرَ. (TA.) See 8. ― -b6- مَا مَنَعَكَ أَلَّا تَسْجُدَ (Kur vii. 11): see أَبَى.

3 مَانَعَهُ الشَّىْءَ ذ He disputed, or contested, with him the thing: (Msb:) he refused him the thing: (TK:) he endeavoured, or contended with him, to make him, or to entice him, to abstain from, or relinquish, the thing; (TA;) [ he endeavoured to turn him away from the thing; to prevent his obtaining it or doing it; he prevented him from obtaining or doing the thing, being also prevented by him; i. e. he reciprocally prevented him, &c.: and hence the meaning in the TA; and then that in the Msb:] مَانَعُوا عَدُوَّهُمْ signifies i. q. حَاجَزُوهُمْ: (TK, art. حجز:) see the latter. ― -b2- تَمَنَّعَ عَلَى السَّنَةِ [ he resisted, or withstood, the year of dearth ]: said of an animal. (K.)

5 تَمَنَّعَ مِنَ الشَّىْءِ بِقَّوْمِهِ ذ and ↓ اِمْتَنَعَ He became strengthened, or fortified, against the thing by his people, or party; syn. تَقَوَّى. (Msb.) ― -b2- تَمَنَّعَ عَنْهُ He refrained, forbore, or abstained, from it, as being forbidden, or prohibited. (K, * TA.) See 8. ― -b3- تَمَنَّعَ بِهِ and بِهِ ↓ اِمتنع he protected, or defended, himself by it, namely a fortress; syn. اِحْتَمَى. (TA.)

6 تَمَانَعَا ذ i. q. تَحَاجَزَا: (K, art. حجز:) see the latter.

8 اِمْتَنَعَ ذ [ It was, or became, prevented from being; it necessarily was not. You say يَمْتَنِعُ هٰذَا لِوُجُودِ ذَاكَ This is prevented from being, or may not be, or necessarily is not, because of that's being. And يَمْتَنِعُ أَنْ تَكُوَن هٰذَا This may not be. ] ― -b2- اِمْتَنَعَ He refrained, forbore, abstained, or held back, (Msb, K,) مِنَ الأَمْرِ from the thing. or affair; (Msb;) as also عَنْهُ ↓ تَمَنَّعَ: (TA:) he did so voluntarily, of his own free will or choice: he refused: you say, اِمْتنَعَ عَنْهُ he refrained, &c., from it voluntarily, &c.; refused it; or refused to do it. (MF. in art. حصر.) See أَبَى. ― -b3- اِمْتَنَعَ عَلَيْهِ He, or it, opposed him; resisted him; withstood him; repugned him; was incompliant, or unyielding, to him; see أَبَى عَلَيْهِ. ― -b4- اِمْتَنَعَ It was, or became, inaccessible, or inapproachable; like ↓ مَنُعَ; syn. with حَصُنَ, q. v.: and also, difficult of access, as in an instance in art. أبى (last sentence of 4); and also عَرِسَ عَلَىَّ. ― -b5- See 5.

مَِنْعَةٌ ذ : see مَنَعَةٌ.

مَنَعَةٌ ذ State, and power, of resistance; lit. a state of might of one's people or party, so that such as desires to do so will not prevail against him: [or a state of might in his people or party, &c.; or a state of might, and power of resistance, in his people or party: ] (Msb:) [ resistibility: or simply resistance: ] inaccessibleness, or unapproachableness, of a people; as also ↓ مَنْعَةٌ and ↓ مِنْعَةٌ. (TA.)

مَنُوعٌ ذ One who denies, or refuses to give; as also ↓ مَانِعٌ and ↓ مَنَّاعٌ. (K.)

مَنِيعٌ ذ , from مَنُعَ, [ Unapproachable; inaccessible: ] difficult of access; fortified; strong: (TK, voce وَزَرٌ:) [ defended, or protected, against attack: like حَصِينٌ: resistive; resisting attack; ] applied to a fortress. (Msb.) ― -b2- قَوْمٌ مُنَعَاآءُ [pl. of مَنِيعٌ] An inaccessible, or unapproachable, people. (TA.)

مَنَّاعٌ ذ مَنُوعٌ.

مَانِعٌ ذ مَنُوعٌ.

المُتَمَنِّعَانِ ذ The young she-camel and young she-kid: because they resist the year of dearth by reason of their youthful vigour, &c. (K.)

مُمْتَنِعٌ ذ Resisting; resisting attack; unyielding; incompliant.

1 مَنَاهُ ذ He tried him; proved him. (S, K.) You say, مَنَاهُ اللّٰهُ بِحُبِّهَا God tried him by love of her. (T.) And مُنِىَ بِكَذَا He was tried by such a thing. (T.) ― -b2- مَنَى He meditated [a thing in his mind]; syn. قَدَّرَ. (Bd, ii. 73.) See أَمِنْيَّةٌ.

5 تَمَنَّاهُ ذ He wished, or desired, it. (K, TA.) ― -b2- التَّمَنِّى relates to that which is possible and to that which is impossible: whereas التَّرَجِّى relates only to what is possible. (I'Ak, p. 90.)

10 تُسْمَنْنَى ذ , said of a she-camel: see 8 in art. سمو.

مَنًى ذ see مَنِيَّةٌ.

مُنْيَةٌ ذ A thing wished for by a man: pl. مُنًى. (T.) This word and ↓ أُمْنِيَّةٌ signify the same. (M, Mgh, Msb, K.) See an ex. in a verse cited voce أَوْ ― -b2- المُنْيَةُ in the case of a covered she-camel, The period by the end of which one knows whether she be pregnant or not. (M.) ― -b3- مُنْيَةٌ of a mare, Twenty days. (M, voce سَفُودٌ.)

مَنِيَّةٌ ذ [ A decreed event. Fate; destiny: ] The decree of death: (IB:) or the decreed term [ of life, or] of a living being: (Er-Rághib:) death; (S, M, K;) because it is decreed; (S, M;) as also ↓ مَنًى: (M, K:) [properly a thing decreed: and hence the pl.] المَنَايَا signifies the fates or decrees [ of God ]. (T.) ― -b2- مَنِيَّةٌ also means (assumed tropical:) A man of courage upon his saddle: (TA in art. حوى:) pl. مَنَايَا: see an ex. voce حَوِيَّةٌ.

أُمْنِيَّةٌ ذ An object of wish, or desire: originally, a thing that a man meditates (يُقَدِّرُهُ) in his mind; from مَنَى signifying قَدَّرَ: and hence applied to a lie; and to what is wished, or desired, and what is read, or desired [pl. أَمَانِىُّ and أَمَانٍ]. (Bd in ii. 73.) See مُنْبَةٌ and حَجْوَى.

لَيْسَ بِهِ مَهَاهٌ ذ , (T in art. رمد,) or فِيهِ, (L in that art.,) It has no goodness and lastingness. (T and L in that art.)

4 أَمْهَدَتْ بِوَلَدِهَا ذ She (a woman) brought forth, or cast forth, her child with a single impulse. (IAar, in L, art. خفد.) ― -b2- أَمْهَدَتْ بِالوَلَدِ is syn. with أَسْهَدَتْ بِهِ; (IAar, O, TA in art. سهد;) and زَكَبْت بِهِ, &c. (IAar, L, in art. خفد.)

4 أَمْهَلَهُ ذ He acted gently, softly, or in a leisurely manner, towards, or with, him. (K.) He granted him some delay, or respite; let him alone, or left him, for a while. (S, K.) [ In both senses ] i. q. أَرْوَدَهُ. (S, art. رود.) You say أَمْهِلْنِى حَتَّى أَفْعَل كَذَا Grant thou me some delay that I may do such a thing; give me time to do such a thing. See Har p. 164.

5 تَمَهَّلَ ذ He acted, or behaved, deliberately, or leisurely; without haste; (S, Msb, K;) in an affair. (S, Msb.)

مَهْلٌ ذ and ↓ مَهَلٌ and ↓ مُهْلَةٌ Gentleness; a leisurely manner of acting or proceeding. (Msb, K, &c.) ― -b2- مَهْلًَا Act gently, softly, or leisurely.

مَهَلٌ ذ : see مَهْلٌ.

مُهْلَةٌ ذ : see مَهْلٌ. ― -b2- فِى الأَمْرِ مُهْلَةٌ In the affair is a delay; syn. تَأْخِيرٌ. (Msb.) ― -b3- فِى مُهْلَةٍ Leisurely; gently; by little and little.

غُرْمُولٌ مُتْمَهِلٌّ ذ A hard penis: see قَاسِبٌ.

مَهْمَةٌ ذ A far-extending مَفَازَة [or desert, &c.]. (S, K.) See اـِصْمِت.

8 اِمْتَهَنَهُ ذ He used it for service and work: (K:) i. q. اِبْتَذَلَهُ, q. v.: (S, Msb:) He held it in mean estimation. (Har, p. 65.)

مَِهْنَةٌ ذ [is syn. with عَمَلٌ and فِعْلٌ, and means work, labour, or] service; ministration; performance of an office. (S, &c.) ― -b2- Also, The clothes worn in service, or in the performance of business. (Msb.)

مَهِينٌ ذ Contemptible; abject: (S, K) weak: having little judgment and discrimination. (K.)

مَهْوٌ ذ , applied to a sword, Thin edged: see an ex. voce خَشِيبَةٌ. ― -b2- سَلْحٌ مَهْوٌ Thin excrement. (Skr in Carm. Huds. p. 15.)

مَهًا ذ (assumed tropical:) Front teeth (ثَغْرٌ) that are clean, white, and lustrous ( having much ماآء): so in a verse of El-Aashà [cited voce رَفَّ]. (TA.)

مُمَهَّى ذ Beverage, or wine, (شَرَاب,) mixed with much water. (IAar, in TA, art. حنذ.)
