حَيَّاكِ مُغْتَرِبٌ يَا شَامُ حَيِّيهِ لَا تَتْرُكِيهِ يُقَاسِي مَا يُقَاسِيهِ.

An exile greets you, O Sham; greet him in return, and do not leave him to endure his suffering alone.

عَيْنَاكِ عَلَّمَتَاهُ الشِّعْرَ فَانْطَلَقَتْ تُسَامِرُ الْمَلَأَ الْأَعْلَى قَوَافِيهِ.

Your eyes taught him poetry, and his verses took flight to converse with the heavens.

تَقَاذَفَتْهُ رِيَاحُ الْبَيْنِ وَانْطَفَأَتْ لَوْلَا بَقِيَّةُ إِيمَانٍ أَمَانِيهِ.

The winds of separation tossed him about; his hopes would have died out, had it not been for a flicker of faith.

يَا شَامُ رُوحِي عَلَى مَغْنَاكِ حَائِمَةٌ هَلْ تَرْفُقِينَ بِجُرْحٍ خَابَ رَاقِيهِ؟

O Sham, my soul hovers over your lands; will you show mercy to a wound that no healer can mend?

أَخْفَيْتُ شَوْقِي فَازْدَادَتْ مَرَاحِلُهُ وَالشَّوْقُ أَقْتَلُهُ فِي النَّفْسِ خَافِيهِ.

I hid my longing, only for it to grow deeper; the deadliest longing is that which is kept hidden within.

يَا شَامُ هَلْ مِنْ حَدِيثٍ عَنْكِ يُؤْنِسُنَا فَتَحْتُ قَلْبِي فِرْدَوْسًا لِرَاوِيهِ؟

O Sham, is there any news of you to comfort us? I have opened my heart like a paradise to anyone who speaks of you.

بِغَيْرِ حُبِّكِ لَمْ يَخْفِقْ لَنَا وَتَرٌ مَنْ قَالَ: يَنْسَى غَرِيبُ الدَّارِ نَادِيهِ؟

Without your love, our hearts would not beat; who says an exile forgets his own kin?

أَرَاكِ فِي يَقَظَتِي رُؤْيَا وَفِي حُلْمِي طَيْفًا عَلَى حَرَمِ الذِّكْرَى أُنَاجِيهِ.

I see you in my waking hours as a vision, and in my dreams as a phantom I whisper to at the sanctuary of memory.

تُسَامِرُ: تُحَادِثُ لَيْلًا.

Tusamiru: to converse at night.

الْبَيْنُ: الْفِرَاقُ.

Al-bayn: separation.

الرَّاقِي: الْمَقْصُودُ بِهِ الطَّبِيبُ.

Al-raqi: refers to a doctor or healer.

الْمَرَاجِلُ: الْقُدُورُ الْكَبِيرَةُ وَالْمَقْصُودُ بِهَا النِّيرَانُ.

Al-marajil: large cooking pots, used here to signify fires.

النَّادِي: الْأَهْلُ وَالْعَشِيرَةُ.

Al-nadi: family and kin.

الطَّيْفُ: الْخَيَالُ.

Al-tayf: a phantom or vision.
