بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ

In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الْمَنْعُوتِ بِجَمِيلِ الصِّفَاتِ

Praise be to Allah, who is described with beautiful attributes.

وَصَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ أَشْرَفِ الْكَائِنَاتِ

And may Allah send blessings upon our master Muhammad, the most noble of beings.

الْمَبْعُوثِ بِالْهُدَى وَدِينِ الْحَقِّ لِيُظْهِرَهُ عَلَى الدِّينِ كُلِّهِ

Sent with guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religion.

وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَصَحْبِهِ الَّذِينَ نَصَبُوا أَنْفُسَهُمْ لِلدِّفَاعِ عَنْ بَيْضَةِ الدِّينِ

And upon his family and companions who dedicated themselves to defending the core of the religion.

حَتَّى رَفَعَ اللَّهُ بِهِمْ مَنَارَهُ ، وَأَعْلَى كَلِمَتَهُ ، وَجَعَلَهُ دِينَهُ الْمُرْتَضَى ، وَطَرِيقَهُ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ

Until Allah raised its beacon through them, elevated His word, and made it His chosen religion and straight path.

وَبَعْدُ ، فَقَدْ كَانَ مِمَّا جَرَى بِهِ الْقَضَاءُ أَنِّي كَتَبْتُ مُنْذُ أَرْبَعِ سِنِينَ تَعْلِيقَاتٍ عَلَى كِتَابِ الْخُلَاصَةِ

And after that, it was among what fate decreed that I wrote four years ago commentaries on the book 'Al-Khulasah'.

الَّذِي صَنَّفَهُ إِمَامُ النُّحَاةِ ، أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ جَمَالُ الدِّينِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ

Which was authored by the leader of grammarians, Abu Abdullah Jamal al-Din Muhammad ibn Malik.

الْمَوْلُودُ بِحَيَّانَ سَنَةَ سِتِّمِائَةٍ مِنَ الْهِجْرَةِ ، وَالْمُتَوَفَّى فِي دِمَشْقَ سَنَةَ اثْنَتَيْنِ وَسَبْعِينَ وَسِتِّمِائَةٍ

Born in Hayyan in the year 600 AH, and died in Damascus in the year 672 AH.

وَعَلَى شَرْحِهِ الَّذِي صَنَّفَهُ قَاضِي الْقُضَاةِ بَهَاءُ الدِّينِ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَقِيلٍ

And on its explanation authored by the Chief Justice Baha al-Din Abdullah ibn Aqil.

الْمَوْلُودُ فِي سَنَةِ ثَمَانٍ وَتِسْعِينَ وَسِتِّمِائَةٍ ، وَالْمُتَوَفَّى فِي سَنَةِ تِسْعٍ وَسِتِّمِائَةٍ وَسَبْعِمِائَةٍ مِنَ الْهِجْرَةِ

Born in the year 698 AH, and died in the year 769 AH.

وَلَمْ يَكُنْ يَدُورُ بِخَلَدِي - عَلِمَ اللَّهُ - أَنَّ تَعْلِيقَاتِي هَذِهِ سَتَحُوزُ قَبُولَ الْقُرَّاءِ وَرِضَاهُمْ

And it did not cross my mind - Allah knows - that these commentaries of mine would gain the acceptance and satisfaction of the readers.

وَأَنَّهَا سَتَحُلُّ مِنْ أَنْفُسِهِمُ الْمَحَلَّ الَّذِي حَلَّتْهُ

And that they would occupy the place in their hearts that they did.

بَلْ كُنْتُ أَقُولُ فِي نَفْسِي : « إِنَّهُ أَثَرٌ يَذْكُرُنِي بِهِ الْإِخْوَانُ وَالْأَبْنَاءُ ، وَلَعَلَّهُ يَجْلِبُ لِي دَعْوَةَ رَجُلٍ صَالِحٍ فَأَكُونَ بِذَلِكَ مِنَ الْفَائِزِينَ

Rather, I used to say to myself: 'It is a work by which brothers and children will remember me, and perhaps it will bring me the prayer of a righteous man, so I may be among the winners.'

ثُمَّ جَرَتِ الْأَيَّامُ بِغَيْرِ مَا كُنْتُ أَرْتَقِبُ

Then the days passed differently than I expected.

فَإِذَا الْكِتَابُ يَرُوقُ قُرَّاءَهُ ، وَيَنَالُ مِنْهُمُ الْإِعْجَابَ كُلَّ الْإِعْجَابِ

And the book pleased its readers and attained all admiration from them.

وَإِذَا هُمْ يَطْلُبُونَ إِلَيَّ فِي إِلْحَاحٍ أَنْ أُعِيدَ طَبْعَهُ

And they were requesting me insistently to reprint it.

وَلَمْ يَكُنْ قَدْ مَضَى عَلَى ظُهُورِهِ سَنَتَانِ

And not even two years had passed since its appearance.

وَلَمْ أَشَأْ أَنْ أُجِيبَ هَذِهِ الرَّغْبَةَ إِلَّا بَعْدَ أَنْ أُعِيدَ النَّظَرَ فِيهِ

And I did not wish to answer this desire until after I reviewed it again.

فَأُصْلِحَ مَا عَسَى أَنْ يَكُونَ قَدْ فَرَطَ مِنِّي ، أَوْ أُتَمِّمَ بَحْثًا ، أَوْ أُبْدِلَ عِبَارَةً بِعِبَارَةٍ أَسْهَلَ مِنْهَا وَأَدَّى إِلَى الْقَصْدِ ، أَوْ أَضْبِطَ مِثَالًا أَوْ كَلِمَةً غَفَلْتُ عَنْهَا

To fix what might have escaped me, or complete a research, or replace a phrase with an easier one that leads to the purpose, or adjust an example or a word I neglected.
