يَقُولُ أُمَيَّةُ بْنُ أَبِي الصَّلْتِ

Umayyah ibn Abi al-Salt says:

غَذَوْتُكَ مَوْلُودًا وَعُلْتُكَ يَافِعًا تُعَلُّ بِمَا أُدْنِي إِلَيْكَ وَتَنْهَلُ

I nourished you as a newborn and raised you as a youth; you drank deeply again and again of what I provided.

إِذَا لَيْلَةٌ نَابَتْكَ بِالسُّقْمِ لَمْ أَبِتْ لِشَكْوَاكَ إِلَّا سَاهِرًا أَتَمَلْمَلُ

If a night brought you illness, I spent it awake, tossing and turning in sympathy with your complaints.

لَمْ أَبِتْ

I spent it awake.

كَأَنِّي أَنَا الْمَطْرُوقُ دُونَكَ بِالَّذِي طُرِقْتَ بِهِ دُونِي فَعَيْنِيَ تَهْمِلُ

It was as if I were the one struck by your affliction, and so my eyes overflowed with tears.

تَخَافُ الرَّدَى نَفْسِي عَلَيْكَ وَإِنَّهَا لَتَعْلَمُ أَنَّ الْمَوْتَ حَتْمٌ مُؤَجَّلُ

My soul fears death for you, even though it knows that death is an inevitable, appointed fate.

فَلَمَّا بَلَغْتَ السِّنَّ وَالْغَايَةَ الَّتِي إِلَيْهَا مَدَى مَا كُنْتُ فِيكَ أُؤَمِّلُ

When you reached the age and the goal that I had always hoped for you,

جَعَلْتَ جَزَائِي غِلْظَةً وَفَظَاظَةً كَأَنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْمُنْعِمُ الْمُتَفَضِّلُ

You repaid me with harshness and rudeness, as if you were the one who had been the benefactor.

فَلَيْتَكَ إِنْ لَمْ تَرْعَ حَقَّ أُبُوَّتِي فَعَلْتَ كَمَا الْجَارُ الْمُجَاوِرُ يَفْعَلُ

If you would not honor my rights as a father, I wish you had at least acted as a neighbor does.

فَأَوْلَيْتَنِي حَقَّ الْجِوَارِ وَلَمْ تَكُنْ عَلَيَّ بِمَالٍ دُونَ مَالِكَ تَبْخَلُ

You would have granted me the rights of a neighbor and not been stingy with your wealth toward me.

٢. أُعِيدُ رَسْمَ الْكَلِمَاتِ الَّتِي تَحْتَهَا خَطٌّ فِي النَّصَّيْنِ السَّابِقَيْنِ مُتَأَمِّلًا كِتَابَةَ (ل) - (لَا).

(*) أُمَيَّةُ بْنُ أَبِي الصَّلْتِ الثَّقَفِيُّ، يُكَنَّى بِأَبِي الْحَكَمِ، شَاعِرٌ جَاهِلِيٌّ، مِنْ شُعَرَاءِ ثَقِيفٍ، امْتَازَ شِعْرُهُ بِالْحِكْمَةِ وَالدِّقَّةِ فِي الْوَصْفِ.

(*) Umayyah ibn Abi al-Salt al-Thaqafi, known as Abu al-Hakam, was a pre-Islamic poet from the tribe of Thaqif, whose poetry was distinguished by wisdom and precise description.
