لَا شَكَّ فِي أَنَّ كُلَّ مُتَأَمِّلٍ لِلْكَوْنِ يَتَعَجَّبُ مِنْ عَظِيمِ قُدْرَةِ اللهِ -تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى- عَلَى حُسْنِ خَلْقِهِ، وَتَدْبِيرِهِ، فَفِيهِ مِنَ الْحَوَادِثِ الْعَظِيمَةِ، وَمَا اشْتَمَلَ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ بَدِيعِ صُنْعِهِ، عَزَّ وَجَلَّ، وَعَجَائِبِ قُدْرَتِهِ، وَإِحَاطَتِهِ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ فِي الْآفَاقِ، وَالْأَنْفُسِ الدَّالَّةِ عَلَى وَحْدَانِيَّتِهِ مَا يُشِيرُ إِلَى قُدْرَةِ اللهِ فِي خَلْقِ هَذَا الْكَوْنِ الْوَاسِعِ، وَأَنَّ هَذَا الْكَوْنَ بِمُعْجِزَاتِهِ إِنَّمَا هُوَ دَلِيلٌ عَلَى إِتْقَانٍ، وَحِكْمَةٍ فِي الْخَلْقِ، وَالْإِبْدَاعِ.

There is no doubt that anyone who contemplates the universe marvels at the greatness of God—Blessed and Exalted be He—in the beauty of His creation and His providence. The universe is filled with monumental events, wonders of His craftsmanship, and signs of His power and all-encompassing knowledge throughout the horizons and within the human soul. These all point to His oneness and testify to the perfection, wisdom, and creativity inherent in the design of this vast universe.

وَالْآيَاتُ الَّتِي بَيْنَ أَيْدِينَا تَتَنَاوَلُ الْحَدِيثَ عَنِ السَّاعَةِ، وَاخْتِصَاصِ عِلْمِ اللهِ بِهَا، وَعِلْمِهِ بِمَا تُكِنُّهُ الْأَكْمَامُ وَالْأَرْحَامُ، وَتَعْرِضُ مَشْهَدَ الْكَافِرِينَ وَهُمْ يُسْأَلُونَ عَمَّنِ اتَّخَذُوهُمْ شُرَكَاءَ لِلَّهِ، وَتَكْشِفُ حَقِيقَةَ الْإِنْسَانِ الَّذِي يَنْسَى اللهَ فِي الرَّخَاءِ، وَيَتَذَكَّرُهُ فِي الضَّرَّاءِ، عَلَى الرَّغْمِ مِنْ حِرْصِ الْإِنْسَانِ، إِلَّا أَنَّهُ لَا يَحْتَاطُ لَهَا، فَيُكَذِّبُ، وَيَكْفُرُ، غَيْرَ آبِهٍ لِمَا يَعْقُبُ هَذَا التَّكْذِيبَ مِنْ سُوءِ الْمُنْقَلَبِ وَالْمَآلِ.

The verses before us discuss the Hour and God’s exclusive knowledge of it, as well as His awareness of what the sheaths and wombs conceal. They present the scene of the disbelievers being asked about those they associated with God, and they reveal the true nature of the human being who forgets God in times of prosperity but remembers Him in adversity. Despite human ambition, people often fail to prepare for the afterlife; they deny and disbelieve, heedless of the dire consequences that follow such denial.

وَتَخْتِمُ السُّورَةُ بِوَعْدِ اللهِ أَنْ يَكْشِفَ لِلنَّاسِ مِنْ آيَاتِهِ الَّتِي لَا تَنْتَهِي فِي الْأَنْفُسِ، وَالْآفَاقِ حَتَّى يَتَبَيَّنُوا، وَيَتَّقُوا بِرَبِّهِمْ.

The Surah concludes with God’s promise to reveal His endless signs in the human soul and the horizons until the truth becomes clear and people learn to fear their Lord.

مَنْ عَمِلَ صَالِحًا فَلِنَفْسِهِ، وَمَنْ أَسَاءَ فَعَلَيْهَا وَمَا رَبُّكَ بِظَلَّامٍ لِلْعَبِيدِ.

Whoever does good does so for his own soul, and whoever does evil does so against it; your Lord is never unjust to His servants.

إِلَيْهِ يُرَدُّ عِلْمُ السَّاعَةِ وَمَا تَخْرُجُ مِن ثَمَرَةٍ مِّنْ أَكْمَامِهَا : جَمْعُ كُمٍّ، وَهِيَ أَوْعِيَةُ الثِّمَارِ.

"To Him is returned the knowledge of the Hour, and no fruit emerges from its sheaths": sheaths refers to the husks or containers of fruits.

وَمَا تَحْمِلُ مِنْ أُنثَى وَلَا تَضَعُ إِلَّا بِعِلْمِهِ وَيَوْمَ يُنَادِيهِمْ أَيْنَ شُرَكَائِي قَالُوا ءَاذَنَّاكَ مَا مِنَّا مِن شَهِيدٍ وَضَلَّ عَنْهُم مَّا كَانُوا يَدْعُونَ مِن قَبْلُ وَظَنُّوا مَا لَهُم مِّن مَّحِيصٍ.

"And no female conceives or gives birth except with His knowledge. On the Day He calls to them, 'Where are My partners?' they will say, 'We have informed You that there is no witness among us.' Those they used to call upon will vanish, and they will realize they have no escape."

آذَنَّاكَ : أَسْمَعْنَاكَ، وَأَعْلَمْنَاكَ.

"Adhannaka": We have made You hear and we have informed You.

مَحِيصٍ : مَهْرَبٌ عَنِ النَّارِ.

"Mahis": An escape from the Fire.

لَّا يَسْأَمُ الْإِنسَانُ مِن دُعَاءِ الْخَيْرِ وَإِن مَّسَّهُ الشَّرُّ فَيَئُوسٌ قَنُوطٌ وَلَئِنْ أَذَقْنَاهُ رَحْمَةً مِّنَّا مِن بَعْدِ ضَرَّاءَ مَسَّتْهُ لَيَقُولَنَّ هَذَا لِي وَمَا أَظُنُّ السَّاعَةَ قَائِمَةً وَلَئِن رُّجِعْتُ إِلَى رَبِّي إِنَّ لِي عِندَهُ لَلْحُسْنَى فَلَنُنَبِّئَنَّ الَّذِينَ.

"Man does not tire of praying for good, but if evil touches him, he becomes despairing and hopeless. If We let him taste mercy from Us after adversity, he will surely say, 'This is my due, and I do not believe the Hour will ever come. If I am returned to my Lord, I will surely have the best with Him.' We will certainly inform those..."

الشَّرُّ : الْفَقْرُ، وَالْمَرَضُ.

"Al-sharr" (Evil): Poverty and illness.

فَيَئُوسٌ قَنُوطٌ : فَيَائِسٌ مِنْ رَحْمَةِ اللهِ، وَمِنْ إِجَابَةِ الدُّعَاءِ.

"Faya'usun qanut" (Despairing and hopeless): Despairing of God’s mercy and the answering of prayer.
