حَدِيثُ ضَيْفِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ)

The story of Abraham’s guests (peace be upon him).

إِكْرَامُ الضَّيْفِ مِنْ صِفَاتِ الإِنْسَانِ الكَرِيمِ فِي طَبْعِهِ، الحَكِيمِ فِي تَعَامُلِهِ، الفَاضِلِ بِأَخْلَاقِهِ.

Honoring guests is a trait of a person who is naturally generous, wise in his dealings, and virtuous in his character.

وَنَبِيُّ اللهِ إِبْرَاهِيمُ - عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ - أَكْرَمُ الخَلْقِ، وَأَبَرُّهُمْ بِضُيُوفِهِ المُكْرَمِينَ، فَأَكْرَمَ نُزُلَهُمْ.

The Prophet of God, Abraham (peace be upon him), was the most generous of all people and the kindest to his honored guests, providing them with the best of hospitality.

وَهَذِهِ الآيَاتُ دَلَائِلُ عَلَى تَمْكِينِ الحَقِّ وَالإِيمَانِ، تَرْوِي قِصَّةَ الكَرَمِ فِي ضِيَافَةِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ - عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ -، وَتَكْشِفُ عَنْ أَمْرِ المُرْسَلِينَ إِلَى قَوْمِ لُوطٍ - عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ -.

These verses serve as evidence of the truth and faith; they recount the story of Abraham’s (peace be upon him) hospitality and reveal the mission of the messengers sent to the people of Lot (peace be upon him).

قَالَ تَعَالَى:

The Almighty said:

وَفِي الْأَرْضِ ءَايَاتٌ لِّلْمُوقِنِينَ (٢٠) وَفِي أَنفُسِكُمْ أَفَلَا تُبْصِرُونَ (٢١) وَفِي السَّمَاءِ رِزْقُكُمْ وَمَا تُوعَدُونَ (٢٢) فَوَرَبِّ السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ إِنَّهُ لَحَقٌّ مِّثْلَ مَا أَنَّكُمْ تَنطِقُونَ (٢٣) هَلْ أَتَاكَ حَدِيثُ ضَيْفِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْمُكْرَمِينَ (٢٤) إِذْ دَخَلُوا عَلَيْهِ فَقَالُوا سَلَامًا قَالَ سَلَامٌ قَوْمٌ مُّنكَرُونَ (٢٥) فَرَاغَ إِلَى أَهْلِهِ فَجَاءَ بِعِجْلٍ سَمِينٍ (٢٦) فَقَرَّبَهُ إِلَيْهِمْ قَالَ أَلَا تَأْكُلُونَ (٢٧) فَأَوْجَسَ مِنْهُمْ خِيفَةً قَالُوا لَا تَخَفْ وَبَشَّرُوهُ بِغُلَامٍ عَلِيمٍ (٢٨) فَأَقْبَلَتِ امْرَأَتُهُ فِي صَرَّةٍ فَصَكَّتْ وَجْهَهَا وَقَالَتْ عَجُوزٌ عَقِيمٌ (٢٩) قَالُوا كَذَلِكِ قَالَ رَبُّكِ إِنَّهُ هُوَ الْحَكِيمُ الْعَلِيمُ (٣٠) قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكُمْ أَيُّهَا الْمُرْسَلُونَ (٣١) قَالُوا إِنَّا أُرْسِلْنَا إِلَى قَوْمٍ مُّجْرِمِينَ (٣٢) لِنُرْسِلَ عَلَيْهِمْ حِجَارَةً مِّن طِينٍ (٣٣) مُّسَوَّمَةً عِندَ رَبِّكَ لِلْمُسْرِفِينَ (٣٤) فَأَخْرَجْنَا مَن كَانَ فِيهَا مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ (٣٥) فَمَا وَجَدْنَا فِيهَا غَيْرَ بَيْتٍ مِّنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ (٣٦) وَتَرَكْنَا فِيهَا ءَايَةً لِّلَّذِينَ يَخَافُونَ الْعَذَابَ الْأَلِيمَ (٣٧)

On earth are signs for those with certain faith, and within yourselves—do you not see? In heaven is your provision and all that you are promised. By the Lord of heaven and earth, this is the truth, just as surely as you speak. Has the story of Abraham’s honored guests reached you? When they entered his presence and said, "Peace," he replied, "Peace," thinking to himself, "These are strangers." He slipped away to his family and returned with a fat calf, which he set before them, asking, "Will you not eat?" He felt a sense of apprehension toward them, but they said, "Do not fear," and gave him the good news of a son endowed with knowledge. His wife approached with a cry, struck her face, and said, "I am a barren old woman!" They replied, "This is what your Lord has said; He is the Wise, the Knowing." Abraham asked, "What is your business here, O messengers?" They said, "We have been sent to a criminal people, to rain down upon them stones of clay, marked by your Lord for the transgressors." We brought out the believers who were there, but we found only one house of Muslims. We left behind a sign for those who fear the painful punishment.

آيَاتٌ مُفْرَدُهَا آيَةٌ، وَهِيَ مِثْلُ العَلَامَةِ.

Ayat (signs): the singular is ayah, meaning a mark or indication.

المُوقِنِينَ: مُفْرَدُهَا مُوقِنٌ، وَهُوَ العَالِمُ المُتَأَكِّدُ.

Al-Muqinin (the certain): the singular is muqin, referring to one who possesses certain knowledge.

مُنْكَرُونَ: غَيْرُ مَعْرُوفِينَ.

Munkarun (strangers): unknown people.

رَاغَ: رَجَعَ إِلَى أَهْلِهِ.

Ragha: he went to his family.

فَأَوْجَسَ مِنْهُمْ خِيفَةً: أَحَسَّ بِالخَوْفِ.

Fa-awjasa minhum khifatan: he felt afraid.

صَرَّةٌ: صَيْحَةٌ.

Sarrah: a cry.

صَكَّتْ: لَطَمَتْ.

Sakkath: she struck.

عَقِيمٌ: لَمْ تَلِدْ قَطُّ.

Aqim: one who has never given birth.

خَطْبُكُمْ: شَأْنُكُمْ.

Khatbukum: your business or purpose.

مُسَوَّمَةٌ: مُعَلَّمَةٌ.
