حَيْفَا بِنْتٌ تَعِيشُ فِي بَيْتٍ مِنَ الصَّفِيحِ، قُرْبَ الْبَحْرِ فِي بَيْرُوتَ.

Haifa is a girl living in a tin shack by the sea in Beirut.

تُحِبُّ الْبَحْرَ، وَتُحِبُّ جَدَّهَا الَّذِي يَصْحَبُهَا بِقَارِبِهِ الصَّغِيرِ، وَيَقُولُ لَهَا دَائِماً: حَيْفَا جَمِيلَةٌ.

She loves the sea and her grandfather, who takes her out in his small boat and always tells her, "Haifa is beautiful."

رَأَتْهُ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ يَحْمِلُ شِبَاكَ الصَّيْدِ، وَيَتَّجِهُ نَحْوَ الْقَارِبِ.

One day, she saw him carrying his fishing nets toward the boat.

سَبَقَتْهُ وَجَلَسَتْ فِيهِ كَعَادَتِهَا، لَكِنَّهُ أَخَذَهَا بَيْنَ ذِرَاعَيْهِ، وَأَنْزَلَهَا قَائِلاً: لَا يُمْكِنُ أَنْ تَذْهَبِي مَعِي هَذِهِ الْمَرَّةَ يَا حَيْفَا؛ لِأَنَّنِي سَأُبْحِرُ بَعِيداً جِدّاً هَذَا الْيَوْمَ.

She beat him to it and sat inside as usual, but he picked her up and set her down, saying, "You can't come with me this time, Haifa, because I'm sailing very far today."

صَعِدَ إِلَى الْقَارِبِ، وَقَالَ: هُنَاكَ حَيْفَا أُخْرَى تَنْتَظِرُنِي خَلْفَ الْبَحْرِ، جَمِيلَةٌ مِثْلُكِ، وَحِينَ أَعُودُ سَأُحَدِّثُكِ عَنْهَا كَثِيراً.

He boarded the boat and said, "There is another Haifa waiting for me across the sea, as beautiful as you, and when I return, I will tell you all about her."

دَفَعَ الْقَارِبَ بِيَدَيْهِ الْقَوِيَّتَيْنِ، وَأَبْحَرَ بَعِيداً، أَمَّا حَيْفَا، فَجَلَسَتْ عَلَى الرَّمْلِ تَنْتَظِرُ عَوْدَةَ جَدِّهَا، وَهِيَ تَبْكِي.

He pushed the boat off with his strong hands and sailed away, while Haifa sat on the sand, crying as she waited for his return.

سَمِعَهَا طَائِرُ النَّوْرَسِ، فَقَالَ لَهَا: لِمَاذَا أَنْتِ حَزِينَةٌ هَكَذَا؟

A seagull heard her and asked, "Why are you so sad?"

قَالَتْ حَيْفَا: جَدِّي يُحِبُّ بِنْتاً اسْمُهَا حَيْفَا، وَقَدْ تَرَكَنِي، وَذَهَبَ إِلَيْهَا.

Haifa replied, "My grandfather loves a girl named Haifa, so he left me to go to her."

ضَحِكَ النَّوْرَسُ، وَقَالَ: حَيْفَا الْأُخْرَى لَيْسَتْ بِنْتاً، إِنَّهَا مَدِينَتُهُ الَّتِي وُلِدَ فِيهَا.

The seagull laughed and said, "The other Haifa isn't a girl; it's the city where he was born."

بَقِيَتْ حَيْفَا عَلَى الشَّاطِئِ حَتَّى غُرُوبِ الشَّمْسِ تَحْلُمُ بِحَيْفَا الثَّانِيَةِ.

Haifa stayed on the beach until sunset, dreaming of that second Haifa.
