شَدَائِدُ وَأَزَمَاتٌ. مِنْ بَنِي هَاشِمٍ وَبَنِي عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ؟ مُقَاطَعَةً تَامَّةً. وَأَقْسَمُوا بِأَصْنَامِهِمْ لَيَكُفُّنَّ عَنْ مُعَامَلَتِهِمْ. لَا يَتَزَوَّجُونَ مِنْهُمْ، وَلَا يَبيعُونَ، وَلَا يَشْتَرُونَ. وَكَتَبُوا هَذِهِ الْمُعَاهَدَةَ الْجَائِرَةَ فِي وَثِيقَة. ثُمَّ أَوْدَعُوهَا مَكَانًا أَمِينًا فِي الْكَعْبَةِ. أَكَانُوا يَتَوَخَوْنَ أَنْ يُهْلِكُوا عَشِيرَةَ الرَّسُولِ جُوعًا؟! كَمَا تَصْنَعُ الْأُمَمُ الْمُتَحَارِبَةُ فِي هَذَا الزَّمَانِ. وَكَمَا يَصْنَعُ الْمُتَعَادُونَ فِي كُلِّ زَمَانٍ. وَفِي كُلِّ مَكَان. يَا لَهَا مِنْ سِيَاسَةٍ مَاكِرَةٍ! مَا أَظُنُّهُمْ قَدَرُوا عَلَى تَنْفِيذِهَا. حَاوَلُوا تَطْبِيقَهَا ثَلَاثَةَ أَعْوَامٍ. فَلَمْ يَزِيدُوهُمْ إِلَّا تَمَسُّكًا وَإِصْرَارًا. مَا أَكْثَرَ مَا يَظْهَرُ الْحَقُّ عَلَى أَيْدِي خُصُومِهِ! إِنَّ خُصُومَ الْحَقِّ وَأَنْصَارَهُ لَيَخْدُمُونَهُ عَلَى السَّوَاءِ. لَسْتُ أَفْهَمُ مَا تَعْنِيَانِ. كَانَتْ قُرَيْشٌ كُلَّمَا أَمْعَنَتْ فِي إِيذَاءِ الرَّسُولِ خَلَقَتْ لَهُ أَنْصَارًا جُدُدًا. وَمَا أَكْثَرَ مَا يَنْقَلِبُ السِّلَاحُ عَلَى صَاحِبِهِ! إِنَّ سِلَاحَ الدِّعَايَةِ ذُو حَدَّيْنِ. وَمَا أَشَدَّ مَا يَنْقَلِبُ السِّلَاحُ عَلَى صَاحِبِهِ! انْقَلَبَ سِلَاحُ دِعَايَتِهِمُ الْمُغْرِضَةِ، فَكَانَ أَمْضَى سَلَاحٍ فِي يَدِ الرَّسُولِ. صَدَقْتَ، فَقَدْ نَوَّهُوا عَلَى الرَّغْمِ مِنْهُمْ، بِفَضَائِلِ الرَّسُولِ، وَكَرَمِ سَجَايَاهُ. وَنَبَّهُوا الْأَذْهَانَ الْغَافِلَةَ إِلَى مَزَايَاهُ. وَشَرَفِ قَصْدِهِ، وَنُبْلِ مَسْعَاهُ. كَيْفَ كَانَ ذَلِكَ؟ كَانَ الْحُجَّاجُ يَفِدُونَ إِلَى مَكَّةَ فِي كُلِّ عَامٍ.

- From the Banu Hashim and Banu Abd al-Muttalib?
- مُقَاطَعَةً تَامَّةً.
- A total boycott.
- وَأَقْسَمُوا بِأَصْنَامِهِمْ لَيَكُفُّنَّ عَنْ مُعَامَلَتِهِمْ.
- They swore by their idols that they would have no dealings with them.
- لَا يَتَزَوَّجُونَ مِنْهُمْ، وَلَا يَبيعُونَ، وَلَا يَشْتَرُونَ.
- They would not marry them, nor buy from or sell to them.
- وَكَتَبُوا هَذِهِ الْمُعَاهَدَةَ الْجَائِرَةَ فِي وَثِيقَة.
- They wrote this unjust treaty in a formal document.
- ثُمَّ أَوْدَعُوهَا مَكَانًا أَمِينًا فِي الْكَعْبَةِ.
- Then they deposited it in a secure place inside the Kaaba.
- أَكَانُوا يَتَوَخَوْنَ أَنْ يُهْلِكُوا عَشِيرَةَ الرَّسُولِ جُوعًا؟!
- Did they intend to destroy the Messenger's clan through starvation?!
- كَمَا تَصْنَعُ الْأُمَمُ الْمُتَحَارِبَةُ فِي هَذَا الزَّمَانِ.
- Just as warring nations do in this day and age.
- وَكَمَا يَصْنَعُ الْمُتَعَادُونَ فِي كُلِّ زَمَانٍ.
- Just as enemies do in every age.
- وَفِي كُلِّ مَكَان.
- And in every place.
- يَا لَهَا مِنْ سِيَاسَةٍ مَاكِرَةٍ!
- What a cunning policy!
- مَا أَظُنُّهُمْ قَدَرُوا عَلَى تَنْفِيذِهَا.
- I do not believe they were able to carry it out.
- حَاوَلُوا تَطْبِيقَهَا ثَلَاثَةَ أَعْوَامٍ.
- They attempted to enforce it for three years.
- فَلَمْ يَزِيدُوهُمْ إِلَّا تَمَسُّكًا وَإِصْرَارًا.
- But it only made the clan more steadfast and resolute.
- مَا أَكْثَرَ مَا يَظْهَرُ الْحَقُّ عَلَى أَيْدِي خُصُومِهِ!
- How often the truth is revealed by the hands of its own opponents!
- إِنَّ خُصُومَ الْحَقِّ وَأَنْصَارَهُ لَيَخْدُمُونَهُ عَلَى السَّوَاءِ.
- The opponents of the truth and its supporters serve it equally.
- لَسْتُ أَفْهَمُ مَا تَعْنِيَانِ.
- I do not understand what you both mean.
- كَانَتْ قُرَيْشٌ كُلَّمَا أَمْعَنَتْ فِي إِيذَاءِ الرَّسُولِ خَلَقَتْ لَهُ أَنْصَارًا جُدُدًا.
- Whenever Quraish persisted in harming the Messenger, they created new supporters for him.
- وَمَا أَكْثَرَ مَا يَنْقَلِبُ السِّلَاحُ عَلَى صَاحِبِهِ!
- How often a weapon turns against its own master!
- إِنَّ سِلَاحَ الدِّعَايَةِ ذُو حَدَّيْنِ.
- The weapon of propaganda is double-edged.
- وَمَا أَشَدَّ مَا يَنْقَلِبُ السِّلَاحُ عَلَى صَاحِبِهِ!
- How violently that weapon turns against its master!
- انْقَلَبَ سِلَاحُ دِعَايَتِهِمُ الْمُغْرِضَةِ، فَكَانَ أَمْضَى سَلَاحٍ فِي يَدِ الرَّسُولِ.
- Their biased propaganda backfired, becoming the most effective weapon in the Messenger's hand.
- صَدَقْتَ، فَقَدْ نَوَّهُوا عَلَى الرَّغْمِ مِنْهُمْ، بِفَضَائِلِ الرَّسُولِ، وَكَرَمِ سَجَايَاهُ.
- You are right; despite themselves, they drew attention to the Messenger's virtues and noble character.
- وَنَبَّهُوا الْأَذْهَانَ الْغَافِلَةَ إِلَى مَزَايَاهُ.
- They alerted heedless minds to his merits.
- وَشَرَفِ قَصْدِهِ، وَنُبْلِ مَسْعَاهُ.
- And to the honor of his intent and the nobility of his endeavor.
- كَيْفَ كَانَ ذَلِكَ؟
- How so?
- كَانَ الْحُجَّاجُ يَفِدُونَ إِلَى مَكَّةَ فِي كُلِّ عَامٍ.
- Pilgrims used to arrive in Mecca every year.
