فَقَالَ عَنْتَرَةُ: - وَمَاذَا يُغْضِبُكِ عَلَيَّ يَا سَيِّدَتِي؟

Antarah said, "What makes you angry with me, my lady?"

إِنَّنِي لَا أَرْضَى بِأَنْ أَكُونَ عَبْدًا لِوَاحِدَةٍ غَيْرِكِ.

I am not satisfied to be a slave to anyone but you.

لَسْتُ أَرْضَى أَنْ تَكُونَ سَيِّدَتِي سِوَاكِ.

I am not satisfied that my lady be anyone but you.

فَزَادَ ضِحْكُ الْفَتَيَاتِ، وَقَالَتْ مَرْوَةُ: - عَنْتَرَةُ عَبْدُ عَبْلَةَ.

The girls laughed harder, and Marwah said, "Antarah is Abla's slave."

هَكَذَا نُسَمِّيهِ مُنْذُ الْيَوْمِ بَعْدَ أَنْ كَانَ عَبْدَ شَدَّادٍ.

That is what we shall call him from now on, instead of Shaddad's slave.

فَأَقْبَلَتْ عَبْلَةُ عَلَيْهَا وَدَفَعَتْهَا بِرِفْقٍ فِي صَدْرِهَا، وَصَاحَتْ بِعَنْتَرَةَ فِي غَضَبٍ بَاسِمٍ: قُلْ شِعْرَكَ يَا عَنْتَرَةُ.

Abla approached her, gave her a gentle push in the chest, and called out to Antarah with a playful smile, "Recite your poetry, Antarah."

إِنَّ الْغَيْرَةَ لَتَأْكُلُ قُلُوبَهُنَّ كَمَا قَالَتْ سُمَيَّةُ مُنْذُ حِينٍ أَنْشِدْ شِعْرَكَ حَتَّى يَمْلَأَ الْغَيْظُ صُدُورَهُنَّ.

Jealousy is eating their hearts, just as Sumayyah said a moment ago; recite your poetry until rage fills their chests.

فَوَثَبَ عَنْتَرَةُ فِي مَرَحٍ وَجَعَلَ يُنْشِدُ مُتَغَنِّيًا بِقِطَعٍ مِنْ شِعْرِهِ.

Antarah leapt up joyfully and began to sing verses of his own poetry.

وَالْفَتَيَاتُ يَضْرِبْنَ بِأَكُفِّهِنَّ عَلَى وَقْعِ إِنْشَادِهِ.

The girls clapped their hands to the rhythm of his recitation.

وَعَبْلَةُ تَنْظُرُ إِلَى وَجْهِهِ الْأَسْمَرِ الْحَسَنِ الْقَسَمَاتِ وَتَتَأَمَّلُ حَرَكَتَهُ الرَّشِيقَةَ وَهُوَ يُمَثِّلُ مَوَاقِفَهُ فِي الْقِتَالِ حِينًا، وَطَعَنَاتِهِ الْعَدُوَّ حِينًا.

Abla gazed at his handsome, dark-featured face, watching his graceful movements as he acted out scenes of battle, at times mimicking his strikes against the enemy.

أَوْ يَصِفُ فَرَسَهُ فِي مَعْمَعَةِ الْحَرْبِ، أَوْ سُقُوطَ الْأَبْطَالِ صَرْعَى مِنْ حَوْلِهِ مُضَرَّجِينَ بِالدَّمِ.

He described his horse in the heat of combat, or the heroes falling dead around him, drenched in blood.

حَتَّى انْتَهَى إِلَى النَّسِيبِ فَجَعَلَ يَصِفُ مَحَاسِنَ فَتَاتِهِ وَنُبْلَ شِيَمِهَا وَعَلَى حَسَبِهَا.

Finally, he turned to love poetry, describing the virtues of his beloved, the nobility of her character, and her high lineage.

وَتَغَيَّرَ مَظْهَرُهُ عِنْدَ ذَلِكَ فَاعْتَرَتْهُ رَجْفَةٌ وَتَهَدَّجَتْ نَبَرَاتُ صَوْتِهِ.

His demeanor changed; a shiver took hold of him, and his voice trembled.

وَاتَّجَهَ إِلَى عَبْلَةَ بِبَصَرِهِ كَأَنَّهُ يُخَاطِبُهَا بِمَا فِي نَسِيبِهِ مِنَ الْأَوْصَافِ.

He turned his gaze toward Abla, as if the descriptions in his verses were meant for her alone.

ثُمَّ هَدَأَتْ حَرَكَتُهُ بَعْدَ عُنْفِهَا، وَلَانَتْ نَظَرَاتُهُ بَعْدَ أَنْ كَانَتْ تَخْطِفُ كَالْبَرْقِ اللَّامِعِ.

His movements, once fierce, grew calm, and his eyes softened after having flashed like lightning.

وَفَتَحَتِ الْفَتَيَاتُ أَعْيُنَهُنَّ مَأْخُوذَاتٍ بِمَا كَانَ يَنْبَعِثُ فِي ثَنَايَا شِعْرِهِ مِنْ حَرَارَةٍ حَتَّى انْتَهَى مِنْ إِنْشَادِهِ، وَهُوَ يَلْهَثُ وَصَدْرُهُ يَعْلُو وَيَهْبِطُ فِي عُنْفٍ.

The girls opened their eyes wide, captivated by the raw emotion in his poetry, until he finished his recitation, panting as his chest heaved violently.

نَظَرَ نَظْرَةً طَوِيلَةً إِلَى عَبْلَةَ وَهُوَ صَامِتٌ، وَهَدَأَتِ الْأَصْوَاتُ لَحْظَةً، وَعَبْلَةُ تَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِ فِي دَهْشَةٍ عَقَدَتْ لِسَانَهَا عَنِ اللَّفْظِ.

He stared at Abla in silence, and the voices around them died down for a moment, while Abla looked at him in a state of astonishment that left her speechless.

لَقَدْ كَانَتْ تِلْكَ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ سَمِعَتْهُ يُنْشِدُ بِهَذِهِ الْحَرَارَةِ، وَيَتَّجِهُ إِلَيْهَا بِهَذِهِ النَّظْرَةِ.

It was the first time she had heard him recite with such intensity, or look at her with such an expression.

ثُمَّ انْفَجَرَتْ صَيْحَةٌ مِنَ الْفَتَيَاتِ، وَانْدَفَعْنَ نَحْوَ عَنْتَرَةَ يَسْتَعِدْنَ إِنْشَادَهُ.

Then a cry erupted from the girls, and they rushed toward Antarah, begging him to recite again.

وَلَكِنَّهُ كَانَ مُطْرِقًا حَزِينًا صَامِتًا، وَانْفَلَتَ مُسْرِعًا مِنْ بَيْنِهِنَّ فَذَهَبَ إِلَى فَمِ الشِّعْبِ بَطِيئًا.

But he remained downcast, sad, and silent, before slipping away from them and heading slowly toward the mouth of the mountain pass.

فَمَا زَالَ حَتَّى بَلَغَ الْمَكَانَ الَّذِي تَرَكَ فِيهِ فَرَسَهُ فَوَثَبَ عَلَيْهِ فَانْطَلَقَ بِهِ بَيْنَ الْكُثْبَانِ وَهُوَ غَارِقٌ فِي شُجُونِهِ الثَّائِرَةِ.

He did not stop until he reached the place where he had left his horse, then he leapt onto its back and rode off among the dunes, lost in his turbulent sorrows.

وَذَهَبَتِ الْفَتَيَاتُ إِلَى حَيْثُ ضُرِبَتِ الْخِيَامُ، وَأَقْبَلْنَ عَلَى مَنْ هُنَاكَ مِنَ النِّسَاءِ، فَجَعَلْنَ يَتَحَدَّثْنَ إِلَيْهِنَّ بِمَا كَانَ.

The girls went to the tents and approached the women gathered there, telling them what had happened.

وَكُلٌّ مِنْهُنَّ تُرْسِلُ فِي حَدِيثِهَا كَلِمَةً تُصَوِّرُ بِهَا مَا أَحَسَّتْ مِنْ اتِّجَاهِ عَنْتَرَةَ إِلَى عَبْلَةَ فِي إِنْشَادِهِ الْعَجِيبِ.

Each of them added a remark, describing how she felt about the way Antarah had directed his performance toward Abla.

كَانَتْ أَشَدَّهُنَّ خُبْثًا مَرْوَةُ ابْنَةُ شَدَّادٍ، فَأَرَادَتْ أَنْ تُغِيظَ عَبْلَةَ ابْنَةَ عَمِّهَا فَجَمَعَتِ الْفَتَيَاتِ وَجَعَلَتْ تُنْشِدُ، وَهُنَّ يُرَدِّدْنَ مُصَفِّقَاتٍ فَقَالَتْ:

The most malicious among them was Marwah, daughter of Shaddad, who wanted to provoke her cousin Abla; she gathered the girls and began to chant, while they clapped and repeated after her:

أَمَا رَأَيْتُمْ عَنْتَرَةَ؟ فِي حُلَّةٍ مُعَصْفَرَةٍ وَعِمَّةٍ مُكَوَّرَةٍ أَمَا عَرَفْتُمْ فِعْلَهُ؟ يُنْشِدُ مُنْذُ اللَّيْلَةِ يَسِيرُ سَيْرَ الْقَسْوَرَةِ وَلِمَّةٍ مُضَفَّرَةٍ أَمَا سَمِعْتُمْ قَوْلَهُ وَيْلٌ لَهُ يَا وَيْلَهُ عَنْتَرُ عَبْدُ عَبْلَةَ

"Have you seen Antarah? In his saffron robes and rounded turban. Have you seen his ways? Reciting all night, stalking like a lion with his braided hair. Have you heard his words? Woe to him, oh woe to him, Antar is Abla's slave."

وَتَعَالَى ضِحْكُهُنَّ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ، وَجَعَلْنَ يُرَدِّدْنَ النَّشِيدَ، وَيَعْبَثْنَ بِعَبْلَةَ حَتَّى غَضِبَتْ وَذَهَبَتْ نَافِرَةً، فَسِرْنَ وَرَاءَهَا وَجَعَلْنَ يَجْذِبْنَهَا وَهِيَ تَدْفَعُهُنَّ، حَتَّى دَخَلَتْ إِلَى خِبَائِهَا.

Their laughter grew louder as they repeated the chant, teasing Abla until she grew angry and walked away in disgust. They followed her, pulling at her while she pushed them off, until she finally retreated into her tent.
