فَكُنَّا عَلَى ذَلِكَ، حَتَّى بَعَثَ اللَّهُ إِلَيْنَا رَسُولًا مِنَّا نَعْرِفُ نَسَبَهُ وَصِدْقَهُ، وَأَمَانَتَهُ وَعَفَافَهُ.

We lived that way until Allah sent us a messenger from among our own, a man whose lineage, truthfulness, trustworthiness, and chastity we knew well.

فَدَعَانَا إِلَى اللَّهِ لِنُوَحِّدَهُ وَنَعْبُدَهُ، وَنَخْلَعَ مَا كُنَّا نَعْبُدُ نَحْنُ وَآبَاؤُنَا مِنْ دُونِهِ، مِنَ الْحِجَارَةِ وَالْأَوْثَانِ.

He called us to Allah, to acknowledge His oneness and worship Him alone, and to discard the stones and idols that we and our forefathers had worshipped instead of Him.

أَتْمِمْ حَدِيثَكَ، يَا رَشَادُ.

Finish your story, Rashad.

وَأَمَرَنَا بِصِدْقِ الْحَدِيثِ، وَأَدَاءِ الْأَمَانَةِ، وَصِلَةِ الرَّحِمِ، وَحُسْنِ الْجِوَارِ.

He commanded us to speak the truth, fulfill our trusts, maintain ties of kinship, and be good neighbors.

وَنَهَانَا عَنْ سَفْكِ الدِّمَاءِ، وَقَوْلِ الزُّورِ، وَأَكْلِ مَالِ الْيَتِيمِ.

He forbade us from shedding blood, speaking falsehoods, and consuming the wealth of orphans.

فَصَدَّقْنَاهُ، وَآمَنَّا بِهِ وَاتَّبَعْنَاهُ.

We believed in him, trusted him, and followed him.

مَا زَالَ يَرْقَى فِي الْبَلَاغَةِ حَتَّى بَلَغَ الذُّرْوَةَ!

His eloquence continued to rise until it reached its peak!

انْظُرَا كَيْفَ أَجْمَلَ شَكْوَاهُ مِنْ قَوْمِهِ.

Look at how he summarized his people's grievances.

فَعَدَا عَلَيْنَا قَوْمُنَا فَعَذَّبُونَا لِيَرُدُّونَا إِلَى عِبَادَةِ الْأَوْثَانِ.

Our people turned against us and tortured us to force us back to the worship of idols.

فَلَمَّا قَهَرُونَا وَظَلَمُونَا وَضَيَّقُوا عَلَيْنَا، خَرَجْنَا إِلَى بِلَادِكَ.

When they overpowered us, oppressed us, and made life unbearable, we left for your land.

وَاخْتَرْنَاكَ عَلَى غَيْرِكَ، وَرَغِبْنَا فِي جِوَارِكَ، وَرَجَوْنَا أَلَّا نُظْلَمَ عِنْدَكَ.

We chose you over everyone else, sought your protection, and hoped that we would not suffer injustice under your rule.

أَيُّ كَرِيمٍ لَا يَسْحَرُهُ ذَلِكَ الْبَيَانُ الْعَالِي؟!

What noble man would not be enchanted by such masterful speech?!

أَيُّ إِنْسَانٍ لَا يَهْتَزُّ لِهَذِهِ الْبَلَاغَةِ السَّاحِرَةِ؟!

What human being would not be moved by such captivating eloquence?!

وَهَكَذَا اسْتَوْلَى عَلَى النَّجَاشِيِّ الْإِعْجَابُ بِمَا سَمِعَ مِنْ صَادِقِ حُجَّتِهِمْ، وَرَائِعِ بَيَانِهِمْ.

The Negus was captivated by the truth of their argument and the brilliance of their expression.

فَهَشَّ لَهُمْ وَبَشَّ؟

Did he welcome them warmly?

وَأَصَمَّ أُذُنَيْهِ عَمَّا سَمِعَهُ مِنْ وِشَايَاتٍ؟

Did he turn a deaf ear to the slanders he had heard?

صَدَقْتُمَا، وَلَمْ تَعْدُوَا الصَّوَابَ فِيمَا قُلْتُمَا.

You are both right; you have spoken nothing but the truth.

فَقَدْ أُعْجِبَ النَّجَاشِيُّ بِبَلَاغَةِ حِوَارِهِمْ، وَصِدْقِ إِيمَانِهِمْ، كَمَا نَفَرَتْ نَفْسُهُ مِنْ بَغْيِ خُصُومِهِمْ!

The Negus was impressed by the eloquence of their words and the sincerity of their faith, just as he was repulsed by the tyranny of their opponents!

فَنَصَرَ الْأَوَّلِينَ وَصَدَّ عَنِ الْآخَرِينَ.

He supported the former and turned away from the latter.
