{وَلَقَدْ عَلِمُوا لَمَنِ اشْتَرَاهُ مَا لَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ مِنْ خَلَاقٍ}.

And they certainly knew that whoever purchased it would not have any share in the Hereafter.

السِّحْرُ لُغَةً: مَا خَفِيَ وَلَطُفَ سَبَبُهُ،

Magic linguistically: that which is hidden and whose cause is subtle.

وَمِنْهُ سُمِّيَ السَّحَرُ لِآخِرِ اللَّيْلِ؛ لِأَنَّ الْأَفْعَالَ الَّتِي تَقَعُ فِيهِ تَكُونُ خَفِيَّةً،

And from it, the last part of the night is named 'Sahar', because the actions that occur in it are hidden.

وَكَذَلِكَ سُمِّيَ السَّحُورُ لِمَا يُؤْكَلُ فِي آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ؛ لِأَنَّهُ يَكُونُ خَفِيًّا،

And likewise, the pre-dawn meal is named 'Sahur' for what is eaten at the end of the night, because it is hidden.

فَكُلُّ شَيْءٍ خَفِيَ سَبَبُهُ يُسَمَّى سِحْرًا.

So everything whose cause is hidden is called magic.

وَأَمَّا فِي الشَّرْعِ فَإِنَّهُ يَنْقَسِمُ إِلَى قِسْمَيْنِ:

As for in the religious law, it is divided into two parts.

الْأَوَّلُ: عُقَدٌ وَرُقًى، أَيْ قِرَاءَاتٌ وَطَلَاسِمُ يَتَوَصَّلُ بِهَا السَّاحِرُ إِلَى اسْتِخْدَامِ الشَّيَاطِينِ فِيمَا يُرِيدُ لِتَضُرَّ الْمَسْحُورَ.

The first: knots and incantations, meaning readings and talismans by which the magician reaches the use of devils in what he wants to harm the bewitched person.

{وَاتَّبَعُوا مَا تَتْلُو الشَّيَاطِينُ} إِلَى قَوْلِهِ: {يُعَلِّمُونَ النَّاسَ السِّحْرَ}.

And they followed what the devils had recited... until His saying: 'They teach the people magic.'

الثَّانِي: أَدْوِيَةٌ وَعَقَاقِيرُ تُؤَثِّرُ عَلَى بَدَنِ الْمَسْحُورِ وَعَقْلِهِ وَإِرَادَتِهِ وَمَيْلِهِ،

The second: medicines and drugs that affect the body of the bewitched person, his mind, his will, and his inclination.

فَتَجِدُهُ يَنْصَرِفُ وَيَمِيلُ، وَهُوَ مَا يُسَمَّى عِنْدَهُمْ بِالصَّرْفِ وَالْعَطْفِ.

So you find him turning away and inclining, and this is what is called by them 'Sarf' (turning away) and 'Atf' (turning towards).

فَيَجْعَلُونَ الْإِنْسَانَ يَنْعَطِفُ عَلَى زَوْجَتِهِ أَوْ امْرَأَةٍ أُخْرَى، حَتَّى يَكُونَ كَالْبَهِيمَةِ تَقُودُهُ كَمَا تَشَاءُ،

They make the human turn towards his wife or another woman, until he is like a beast that she leads as she wishes.

وَالصَّرْفُ بِالْعَكْسِ مِنْ ذَلِكَ.

And 'Sarf' is the opposite of that.

فَيُؤَثِّرُ فِي بَدَنِ الْمَسْحُورِ بِإِضْعَافِهِ شَيْئًا فَشَيْئًا حَتَّى يَهْلِكَ.

It affects the body of the bewitched person by weakening him bit by bit until he perishes.

وَفِي تَصَوُّرِهِ بِأَنْ يَتَخَيَّلَ الْأَشْيَاءَ عَلَى خِلَافِ مَا هِيَ عَلَيْهِ.

And in his perception, by imagining things contrary to what they are.

وَفِي عَقْلِهِ فَرُبَّمَا يَصِلُ إِلَى الْجُنُونِ، وَالْعِيَاذُ بِاللَّهِ.

And in his mind, he might reach madness, and we seek refuge in Allah.
