Ittqā, yattaqī, its origin is 'awtaqā' on the pattern 'ifta'ala', so the wāw was changed to yā' due to the kasrah before it, and the tā' was substituted for it and assimilated.

فلما كثر استعماله على لفظ الافتعال توهموا أن التاء من نفس الحرف فجعلوه إتقى يتقى بفتح التاء فيهما

And when its use became frequent on the pattern of 'ifti'āl', they assumed that the tā' was part of the root letter, so they made it 'ittqā, yattaqī' with a fatḥah on the tā' in both.

ثم لم يجدوا له مثالا في كلامهم يلحقونه به فقالوا: تقى يتقى مثل قضى يقضى.

Then they did not find an example for it in their speech to attach it to, so they said: 'taqā, yataqā' like 'qaḍā, yaqḍī'.

تقاك بكعب واحد وتلذه * يداك إذا ما هز بالكف يعسل

Your protection is with a single heel, and your hands enjoy it when it is shaken by the hand and moves.

خفافا كلها يتقى بأثر

All of them are light, protected by a trace.

ولا أتقى الغيور إذا رآني * ومثلي لز بالحمس الربيس

And the jealous one does not guard himself when he sees me, and one like me clings to the strong, noble one.

زيادتنا نعمان لا تقطعنها * تق الله فينا والكتاب الذى تتلو

O Nu'mān, do not cut off our increase; fear God concerning us and the Book that you recite.

والتقوى والتقى: واحد، والواو مبدلة من الياء على ما ذكرنا في ريا.

And 'al-taqwā' and 'al-taqā' are one, and the wāw is substituted for the yā' as we mentioned in 'riyā'.

والتقاة: التقية.

And 'al-taqāh' is 'al-taqiyyah'.

يقال: اتقى تقية وتقاة، مثل اتخم تخمة.

It is said: 'ittqā, taqiyyah, and taqāh', like 'atkhama, takhmah'.

وقد قالوا: ما أتقاه لله.

And they have said: 'Mā attqāhu li-llāh' (How God-fearing he is!).

ومن يتق فإن الله معه * ورزق الله مؤتاب وغادى

And whoever fears (God), then God is with him; and God's provision is for those who return and those who go forth.

ويقال: ق على ظلعك، أي الزمه واربع عليه، مثل: ارق على ظلعك.

And it is said: 'qif 'alā ẓal'ik' (stand on your limp), meaning hold fast to it and be firm upon it, like: 'irqa 'alā ẓal'ik'.

وسرج واق، إذا لم يكن معقرا.

And a saddle is 'wāq' if it is not crooked.

وفرس واق، إذا كان يهاب المشي من وجع يجده في حافره.

And a horse is 'wāq' if it hesitates to walk due to pain it finds in its hoof.

ويقال للشجاع: موقى، أي موقي جدا.

And the brave person is called 'mūqā', meaning very brave.

وتوقى واتقى بمعنى.

And 'tawaqqā' and 'ittqā' are synonymous.

وقاه الله وقاية بالكسر، أي حفظه.

And 'waqāhu Allāh wiqāyatan' (May God protect him with protection), meaning He preserved him.

And the 'ūqiyyah' in the hadith is forty dirhams, and so it was in the past. As for today, among what people are familiar with and doctors estimate, the 'ūqiyyah' for them is the weight of ten dirhams and five-sevenths of a dirham, which is one and two-thirds 'istār'.

والجمع الاواقى، مثل أثفية وأثافى، وإن شئت خففت الياء في الجمع.

And the plural is 'al-awāqī', like 'athfiyah' and 'athāfī', and if you wish, you can lighten the yā' in the plural.

She struck her chest towards me and said: 'O 'Adiyy, the protections have indeed saved you.'

And its origin is 'wawāqī', because it is on the pattern 'fawā'il', except that they disliked the meeting of two wāws, so they changed the first into an alif.

والواقي: الصرد، مثل القاضي.

And 'al-wāqī' is the 'ṣurad' (a type of bird), like 'al-qāḍī'.

ويقال هو الواق بكسر القاف بلا ياء، لأنه سمي بذلك لحكاية صوته.

And it is said to be 'al-wāq' with a kasrah on the qāf without a yā', because it was named that due to imitating its sound.

ولست بهياب إذا شد رحله * يقول عداني اليوم واق وحاتم

And I am not timid when his baggage is packed; he says 'Wāq and Ḥātim have avoided me today.'
