والدية: واحدة الديات، والهاء عوض من الواو.
And the 'diyah' is one of the 'diyat' (blood monies), and the 'ha' is a substitute for the 'waw'.
تقول: ودیت القتيل أديه دية، إذا أعطيت ديته.
You say: 'wadaytu al-qatila adiyhi diyah', if you paid his blood money.
واتديت، أي أخذت ديته.
And I received his blood money, meaning I took his blood money.
وإذا أمرت منه قلت: دوا فلانا، وللاثنين: ديا فلانا، وللجماعة: دوا فلانا.
And when you command from it, you say: 'dawwi fulanan' (pay blood money to so-and-so), and for two: 'diya fulanan', and for a group: 'dawwu fulanan'.
وأودى فلان، أي هلك، فهو مود.
And so-and-so perished, meaning he was destroyed, and he is 'mawdi'.
والودى على فعيل: صغار الفسيل، الواحدة ودية.
And 'al-wady' on the pattern 'fa'eel' refers to young palm shoots, the singular is 'wadyah'.
والوادي معروف، وربما اكتفوا بالكسرة عن الياء كما قال:
And 'al-wadi' (valley) is known, and sometimes they suffice with a kasra instead of the ya, as he said:
وقرر قمر الواد بالشاهق

والجمع الأودية على غير قياس، كأنه جمع ودى، مثل سرى وأسرية للنهر.
