وتقول: نميت الحديث إلى فلان نميا، إذا أسندته ورفعته.

And you say: I conveyed the news to so-and-so with conveyance, if you attributed and raised it.

وكذلك نميت الرجل إلى أبيه نميا: نسبته إليه.

And likewise I attributed the man to his father with attribution: I related him to him.

قال الأصمعي: نميت الحديث مخففا نميا، إذا بلغته على وجه الإصلاح والخير، وأصله الرفع.

Al-Asma'i said: I conveyed the news lightly with conveyance, if you delivered it for the sake of reform and good, and its origin is elevation.

ونميت الحديث تنمية، إذا بلغته على وجه النميمة والإفساد.

And I conveyed the news with slander, if you delivered it for the sake of slander and corruption.

ونميت النار تنمية، إذا ألقيت عليها حطبا وذكيتها به.
