عن يونس. وقال ابن الأعرابي: أمنى القوم.

From Yunus. And Ibn al-A'rabi said: The people arrived.

والأمنية: واحدة الأماني.

And al-umniyyah: singular of al-amani (wishes).

تقول منه: تمنيت الشئ، ومنيت غيرى تمنية.

You say from it: 'Tamannaytu al-shay' (I wished for the thing), and 'Mannaytu ghayri tamniyah' (I caused someone else to wish).

وتمنيت الكتاب: قرأته.

And 'tamannaytu al-kitab': I read the book.

(ومنهم أميون لا يعلمون الكتاب إلا أماني)

(And among them are the unlettered who do not know the Scripture except through fabrications)

ويقال: هذا شئ رويته أم شئ تمنيته.

And it is said: 'Is this something you narrated or something you fabricated?'

وفلان يتمنى الاحاديث، أي يفتعلها، وهو مقلوب من المين، وهو الكذب.

And so-and-so fabricates Hadith, meaning he invents them, and it is an inversion of 'al-mayn', which is lying.

ومنوته ومنيته، إذا ابتليته.

And 'manawtuhu' and 'minyatuhu', if you tested him.

ويقال: لأمنينك مناوتك، أي لأجزينك جزاءك.

And it is said: 'La-umninnaka manawtaka', meaning 'I will surely give you your recompense'.

والمماناة: المطاولة.

And al-mamanah: prolonging.

فإلا يكن فيها هرار فإننى * بسل يمانيها إلى الحول خائف

If there is no hesitation in it, then I am a sword that prolongs its presence until the year, fearing.

والمماناة: الانتظار، وأنشد أبو عمرو: علقتها قبل انضباح لوني * وجبت ms1699 لماعا بعيد البون * من أجلها بفتية مانونى

And al-mamanah: waiting. Abu Amr recited: I tied her before the dawn of my complexion... for her sake with young men waiting for me.

أبو زيد: يقال ما نيتك غير مهموز، أي كافأتك.

Abu Zayd said: It is said 'ma naytuka' (without hamza), meaning 'I recompensed you'.

ومناة: اسم صنم كان لهذيل وخزاعة بين مكة والمدينة، والهاء للتأنيث وتسكت عليها بالتاء، وهى لغة.

والنسبة إليها منوى.

And Zayd Manah son of Tamim son of Mur, it is pronounced long and short.

الأهل أتى التيم بن عبد مناءة * على الشنء فيما بيننا ابن تميم
