And the news was obscure to him, meaning it was difficult to understand, like 'ghamma'.
وغمى البيت: ما فوق السقف من القصب والتراب ونحوه، فإن كسرت العين مددت.
And 'ghama' of the house: what is above the roof, made of reeds, mud, and the like; if you pronounce the 'ayn' with kasra, you lengthen.
وقد غميت البيت.
And I covered the house.
يقال صمنا للغمى وللغمى، إذا غم عليهم الهلال.
It is said, 'We fasted because of the obscurity (of the moon), and because of the obscurity (of the moon), if the crescent moon was hidden from them.'
وهى ليلة الغمى.
And it is the night of obscurity.
ليلة غمى طامس هلالها * أو غلتها ومكره إيغالها
A night of obscurity, its crescent moon erased * or its being obscured, and its difficult progression.
